If you are experiencing a strange hiss or distorted audio from your Dyna preamp, the first thing to check is the Left & Right audio output RCA jacks for stray DC voltage. Normally you should only see a small mv level. If you see a few tenths or perhaps full voltage level on the output, you have a leaky coupling cap. That DC voltage is going right into your amplifier inputs! locating the caps is pretty straight forward referencing the schematic. Always bump the capacitor rated voltage up to 600v. Dynaco used 400v caps, however the plate voltage is around 450! So, those old originals are under some stress. Yes, a full cap job is always a good idea. However, I perform what the customer wants.

As young kids we began using one of these for recording into a Sony 777 back in 1965. Our manager, F.John Fuchs was a great tech and brilliant guy. We learned to record by a real pro. Thanks John, gone to Glory now. Thanks Terry for all your work and videos. All the best old boy!!

The PAS-2 and -3 do not have that blocking capacitor on the bass control. That was added in the PAS-3X. Without it, there is a sneak path through the tone controls from the cathode of the early stage in the line amplifier to the output of sometimes as much as 1.2 volts. It is important to note that the Dynakit power amplifiers do not have a blocking cap on their inputs so this positive voltage is applied to the grid of the input tube without that cap in the preamp.

Good info Sir. I normally add them to every PAS that comes in for repair. I never thought about the amp not having a cap input. DC voltage coming in could cause some trouble!

Did you ever do a detail video on your power supply board install.....I've looked and not found it. Might have to go through all your past videos and look again. I've got your board to install yet..2 yrs later... Lee

@@d-labelectronics I'm hoping to meet Terry at one of these hamfests! Was at the last three Monroe's with trunk sales. Thank you for all of your lessons in troubleshooting, Terry!

I prefer it over Fluke & B&K. The old Beckman 310 series was good too
