I found this beautiful Heathkit IG-72 audio generator on ebay. What caught my eye was the front panel tan artwork! If you look these up, the normal color scheme was two tone silver & gray. The Tan series was at the end of the line and quite rare to find. So, considering its value & the fact that the original manual was included, I decided to pull the trigger. When it arrived I was please to see the partial restoration efforts. New caps and a custom meter board. The only things left were change the main filter cap and add a fuse to protect the unit. So, the problem with replacing the main filter cap is cost. They range approx 40-50 dollars plus shipping. That pretty much equals what you would find these generators for on the used market. Solution? use the universal capacitor replacement boards provided by my friend Scott W8AOR. He sells them thru his website (W8AOR.com) or you can find his products on ebay. This method is a huge cost save. I use these boards on amps/ Ham radios/ test equipment repair.

Nice looking generator, but, no A.C. cord upgrade? Ok, I see that you've already answered this!

I"m curious what vintage this is. I've never seen a Heathkit with a white panel and black and silver knobs.

Does the Heathkit still have a two prong cord and would putting in a three prong cause any issues with it?

Audio test gear usually floats, so best to keep the 2 prong cord

Is that the Uni-Cap PCB 600V you are using? On the W8AOR website it looks like it is designed for one capacitor, but you mounted two????

How many are wondering why there is a light bulb under the chassis? I've seen those before. It isn't supposed to light up.

Me for one. Read a circuit description, after initially thinking what a daft place to put a lamp.

@@ralphj4012 I took it out and the receiver didn't work correctly. An old timer tv tech told me what I did wrong. He noticed that it was missing as soon as he got the chassis out of the cabinet. Mumble mumble temperature compensation resistance mumble.

It's there to help regulate the amplitude of the oscillator. Lamps are used because of their nonlinearity. Another great example would be the classic wien-bridge oscillator (HP200A).

@@thomasklima215 Thanks, I was 11 at the time and found an old AM/SW receiver in grandpa's cellar and started to monkey around with it. The bulb didn't light up so I took it out. I thought it seemed silly to have it under the chassis at the time. Then the dial cord broke and I put all the parts in a box, never to be seen again.
