I have reviewed several affordable Leica M lenses already. And Im afraid there will be no surprises here. This lens is just as solid as the others and for the price I cant really fault it.
The review sample was borrowed directly from 7artisans.

Interesting that you've both had good experiences with Squarespace. I'm trying to work out the best option for creating a band site Squarespace v Bandzoogle v Wix etc.

I really like the 7Artisans lenses. They offer so much for a very good price.

Looks like a nice one for the focal length. I just picked up their 50mm f/1.1, I love the rendering although apparently it has a really long retrofocus design because mine won’t go to infinity on my Leica T, it hits the stepped baffles around the sensor by 10 meters. Otherwise, really digging it, and looks like this 35 has much the same mojo.

Thanks for the quick review! I'm debating between this, TTartisan version or the Voigtländer nokton 35 1.4. Any of these you could recommend?
@Muchtoobizy
@Muchtoobizy 3 года назад
I have used all three of these lenses. The TTArtisan and 7artisans lenses are different optical designs, but they render very similarly. The TTArtisan lens has ½ click aperture stops which I like, but I went for the 7artisans version simply because I prefer its physical appearance and built-in lens hood over the square hood of the TT version. The TT version I tried also had slight grinding at the close end of the focusing ring and that annoyed me. One sad aspect of low cost lenses from China is quality inconsistency in each unit. The Voigtlander 35/1.4 is an acquired taste. I own the E-mount version and I really enjoy it, but some people cannot stand its nervous bokeh at certain distances. I would say the Voigtlander 35/1.7 has a rendering that is more likely to appeal to a wider range of users, depending also on which camera you use it with. I buy these non-native lenses because I want added character in my images instead of the sterile look of a lot of modern digital lenses, so its all good for me. Its difficult for anyone to "recommend" these lenses because they each have a particular character and it comes down to personal taste in the end. If you don't live in a country that offers a returns service, then study the online websites for image samples when coupled with your camera-type and find the one that suits you best.

Great video! Have you ever considered doing a video about old CCD digicams that shoot RAW? You know, compact zooms such as the Lumix DMC-LX5, Canon S95 and Olympus XZ-1. I would love to know your thoughts and what you can get out of them, as well as how they hold up against today's smartphone cameras (personally I really like the - now somewhat vintage - look of those cameras). I think it would be useful for those of us on an ultra low budget. Cheers!

I own this lens and my copy is very nice indeed. I would vouch it's as Matthias says. Where it may "disappoint" is it's not blisteringly sharp, and doesn't have the character of say the Zeiss Classic style of lenses. Overall the rendering (contrast and color) are very neutral, and it's FE (floating element) design and aspherical element indicate its very "good bones". You might have a quibble with the micro-contrast. I've used it on a Sony A7R3 and at F2 not been bothered by inadequate lines/mm: a remarkable value optic IMO.

Now, I did buy at the end a 7artisan cloye up adapter, which is really nice and gives you a much more close up focus. Btw I had to adjust tje focus, it took me a while but now it's fun to usr, thanks

Hey Mattisas I know these lenses are good for the money and fun to use but are these 7artisans lens in the same class as the Leica lenses they are trying to imitate?
@thegrayyernaut
@thegrayyernaut 3 года назад
Of course not, the appeal is the prices. They are, like, 10 times cheaper. And for such cheap prices, I'd say they're incredibly more cost-efficient than buying Leica lenses. 7Artisans is here to fill a giant Lecia hole and they get the job done. I'd say their lenses feel more vintage than a lot of modern Leica lenses. But, alas, we aren't buying Leica lenses to save money, are we? xD
@gearreallydoesntmatter
@gearreallydoesntmatter 3 года назад
No they are not even close. But they are nice enough to take awesome photos. And if you like me shoot 98% with for example a 28mm. It makes more sense to buy a Leica 28mm and then 7artisan or similar in 35, 75 etc that wont gen much use. Its also perfect if you want to buy a rangefinder but cant afford any other lenses right now. These will be fine while you save up.

OT but why the whole internet crying about Leica prices? Sony A1 cost 7.5K. I mean 8K, 30frames per sec. But who cares ”Leica is still expensive”
@americansemiotics

I would like to see just a bit more Chris Frost in your reviews. No lens is perfect...tell us a little about the image limitations for the price. Coma, LoCA, vingetting, soft corners, flare, the elephant in the M room (no close focus), etc. Its ok that its not a Summilux, but if someone has a copy, the most useful thing to know is how it falls down so we can make a useful decision about whether to buy one.
@gearreallydoesntmatter

I do that when there is something to say/show. I’m not gonna do chart shots and talk about stuff at 400% zoom. People should not evaluate such things in YT anyway. Better to download high res samples.
@FFVoyager

If you want 'close focusing' best not to bother with a Leica. They aren't really for that.
