I've since found out that the stepping can be avoided. When you click and hold down the mouse on a parameter, such as the filter, if you then drag your mouse further away from the plugin you gain more resolution. It's weird, but it does reduce the stepping a great deal.
Sounds really good. Roland's algorithms are very mature and they really get the interactions as you said. Many plugins adopt a mentality of more is more. The SH2 is on my list!
Great review! You have given me the belief in the 'modelling' to buy a System 1m; principally for this SH2. Rather than risking a lot of dough on the very hard to find SH2. The little touches like reverb and patch saving will be a boon. Although this plug out shows what a special synth the SH2 was. The best Roland plug so far I believe. 🤔
Was going to pick up a moog for some beefy leads and basses.. I'm thinking now that this plug out for my system-1 may just do the trick on its own. Thanks for the video.
Just a couple of issues to be aware of. First it's a vst 3.6 plugin, so it may not work in some DAWS. I know it works in Cubase 7 and Studio One 2. Secondly it seems to forget it's authorized/activated every now and again. Thirdly it seems to forget what presets are loaded in a project, so when you reopen a project using this synth each instance is reset to it's default preset. So you better save your sounds and label the track accordingly so you can reload them. But other than that it's really nice :)
SquareWaveHeaven Yeh - also use VST Automation - and not Midi CC Controller data where possible! 32-bit float instead of 8-bit resolution for parameter values.
Not crazy about this one. The original SH-2 sounds a lot more pleasant and musical, and is not as hard sounding and in your face as the virtual version When I hear the original, I want to keep listening - the tone itself is musical. When I hear the plugout, on the other hand, I find myself wanting to move on pretty quickly.
H4NDCRAFTED If you're comparing your SH-2 to this video you must also factor in the audio quality of youtube and video compression. I've been surprised at how bad the artifacts really are. But yes, I imagine there is still some discernible differences side-by-side, but Roland did a fantastic job!
Sure totally agree, but you can get a feel for the important things, like how the rez behaves etc. It is so close there seems little point owning an SH-2 in practical terms. Still not convinced by the TR-8 but the plugins have been spot on imho.
