When is the best time to harvest Bartlett pears? Since pears do no ripen on the branch like other fruit, there is actually a quick and easy way to know when they are perfect for picking! Join us in our small fruit orchard as we harvest our Bartlett pears and set them in a cool dry place in the barn to ripen over the next 7-10 days.

Thank you! Its the only way we can keep our little farm and big family going, is if we all work together! "Train up a child in the way they should go, and when they are old, they will not depart from it!" Proverbs 22:6

Love the new autumn charts especially the Anjou pears. Any thoughts about doing bosc or bartlett? 😊❤

I have a pear "bush". Yup. What happened is tumbleweeds blew in big time and covered the young tree. By the time I got to it, mice had eaten the bark and trunk just above the graft. It died. I cut it off above the graft and left it alone. A few years later I walked over to it and there it was...1 pear hanging off a lone short branch! I started watering it after that. Now it's a 12 foot tall bush that puts out pears (lots of them) almost every year. The problem is they are hard as a rock and quite bitter. I pull them as you describe and let them sit. They still stay hard as a rock. Actually, they get somewhat yellow before they pull off easily? I even tried the other method of putting them in a paper bag and in the freezer at 32-33? degrees for the time specified, and still hard as a rock. They don't even seem to rot at all? Is this because it's now a bush and not a tree? I sure would like to eat my pears!

I’m partial to Blackberry custard, but my wife’s all time favorite is pear pie!

I'm in Michigan, think I should pick our pears? The tree is three years old. How long do we wait for them to ripen? Also, I just love how gentle your kids are while picking and placing in the boxes. My son would be tossing them lol

Hey Chrissy - Depending on where you are at & what zone you are in, your pears are pretty close it not ready to pick. Just use tis same method of lifting from the base and if it comes off super easy, then they are ready. Then just follow the rest of the directions and let them sit in a cool dry place for 7-10 days until they are just starting to soften and are that nice yellow ripe color! Quick Tip: if you are canning then, can them just a little on the under-ripe side so that they stay firm when you go to eat them. As for the kids: Just make it a fun game and tell them to be very gentle.... But trust me, there are always a few thrown anyways :) As far as the age of your tree is concerned. To give it a leg up and help it to grow faster and better, next spring/summer when it flowers, go and pick off all the buds so that it will not produce any fruit next year. This will put all of its energy into growing the tree and then the following year you will have a great crop of pears!

I moved to a place with a Bartlett pear tree. It’s loaded with pears but they are all covered with a “fuzz” on the outside. Is that normal and what do you do about it?

Do they need frost? What can I pair my ultra dwarf Bartlett with for polinization? Please help!
@RoppFamilyFarm
@RoppFamilyFarm Год назад
Great Question! No these would not need a frost as they ripen late summer. We have paired our Bartlett trees with an Anjou variety and it works very well for us!

Why not just cut 1 open as well?
@RoppFamilyFarm
@RoppFamilyFarm 2 года назад
Great question! You can cut one open, but even then the inside might be ripe but the outside will not. If you let it ripen in the tree by the time the outside looks ripe, the i side will be over ripe. So feel free to cut one open to get a feel for it’s readiness and then pick them all and let them ripen evenly in a cool dark place. Thanks!

Which is best, pear fruit leather or canned pears?
@RoppFamilyFarm
@RoppFamilyFarm 3 года назад
Great question! If you cut them open on the tree, they will still look under-rip. Once you pick them and let them store in a cool dry place for 7-10days you can then cut them open and see how ripe they are.

It’s a toss up! We love them both, but canned pears are pretty good in a bowl with Grahm crackers or cottage cheese! ❤️
