Because this is one of my least favourite garden chores I have come up with a few tricks over the years to make it a little easier. But don't skip this step or all your hard work over the past few months could be wasted. Wether it be getting used to the sun or wind these little seedlings just need a bit of time to get accustomed to the great outdoors :)

Hi! I'm also from Alberta, northern for me. It's so nice to listen and identify with everything you shared. I was disheartened with only a few garlic plants , and found it comforting that I'm not alone :)

It can be so disheartening when things don’t grow or come back in the spring. It’s definitely part of gardening, next year will be better :) I find things don’t overwinter very well in raised beds in our cold climate. Glad you found me, I love chatting with fellow Alberta gardeners :)

All good ponts, wind is definitely a part of hardening off plant. I put a canopy of 40% shade cloth again this year. The plants get full morning sun then they are protected from the harsh midday sun under the shade cloth. I move them around for a little afternoon sun as well. On cloudy days, if I get the chance I move them from under the shade cloth. The wind has been my biggest problem this year, still have not brought out my tomatoes, they will forgive me. Nice video, Stay Well!!!

That's a great idea! I may use the cover over my brassicas on those hot days, maybe it will keep my spinach from bolting too. I've only just started with my tomatoes, hoping to get some planted out next week. Still lot's of work to do in the garden to get everything ready for planting. We have had a cool, wet spring which has been nice for most things just not garden prep :)

Thanks, good tips! I definitely start with longer than a half hour outside but always make sure it’s on a cloudy day like you suggest. We are looking at 10C+ overnight in New Brunswick this week, yay!

Some good tips. Putting them out in groups helps as well. I have a south facing covered veranda that allows me to put them out and leave them out unless it gets cold - I put them under far enough that they don't get direct sun except early in morning and a little late in day...I can then move them more into the sun but find I don't need too. I put them out in one large long group which helps with the wind as well. It actually works quite well I find. A permanent shade cloth building if you will. I do have to turn them if they start leaning to the sun though.

Sounds like you have a perfect spot for that!! Thanks for the tip on groups, that does make sense. Some of my tomatoes are pretty lanky so they could definitely use some support :)

Hello :) Sounds like a fun trial. It would be neat to compare to starting the seeds early indoors. Sometimes I find things in the ground just take off so fast!!
