Quick update - Project H #20 

Hi! The end of the year is here, it is almost impossible to find the hours for making videos.. So, I made this quick update video.. I made another four lab samples of the H tube, one of them is quite usable - that's the one in the video. I think I am not able to move forward without doing modifications to the design of the internal parts. So, let's call this design "Iteration 0" and start designing Iteration 1. I will need to do a lot of small changes in order to manufacture the tube easier and with less risk of damage during the work. In the following videos, I will focus on these changes and explain the ideas behind them. I am eager to hear your opinions - one of the most exciting aspects of this project for me personally is to see you contributing with ideas. I already learned a lot in the comment section under the videos and from the emails you all sent me. Thank you for that! The people reorganization I mentioned in the last videos is going well, it will be a long process, but the things that are already done are helping us to be more effective in the work. We are reorganizing the space as well, the workshop will have its own place - this is the empty room in the video, with a practical white finish :-) 3000 lux of light in the bigger room, no more shuffling with a stationary light when filming the work! I really appreciate you showing the troubles, failures, and partial successes that come along with designing a new product for manufacturing. Too many people post projects on RU-vid where everything went right and their mistakes and failures are glossed over, and it really gives people a false impression of all the hard work that goes into it. In a way, Wintergatan is a fitting match in that regard. Willing to show all the progress and set backs of a wonderful project. I look forward to seeing what you'll be able to create in the coming years.

Hi! The work you are doing is absolutely amazing. Have you ever considered doing CRT rebuilds for vintage TV collectors? It seems you already have most of the eqipment needed. Although electron gun assemblies I guess are hard or impossible to get, so you should make those as well, which seems like a huge task, especially for color CRTs. Or disassemble the old, original electron gun in each tube and re-coat the cathode(s), which also sounds very labour intensive.

Those are such beautiful digits...can't wait to see more.

In this video, you forgot to light number 5️⃣ and 6️⃣. I think that is a bug, in the light bolb program, becuse it's schowing number 4 and 7 at the same time.

Just out of curiosity, would it be possible to manufacture nixie tubes that display roman digits and make a working clock with them?

Even without the full stack of digits this tube is already a real beauty. I am sure that you will solve the remaining problems to end up with perfectly working reliable tubes. Are you also going to sell H-tubes later, after the H-project is finished or will there be only the 121 and maybe some spares for the project?

I know people will point out the defects, but we should be aware of the fact that they occur in any product during development stage. It's just that most companies will never share them to the public. I love the way Dalibor shares the challenges as well.

3 backwards, and 4 and 7 shorted? But otherwise looks really nice!

The manufacturer carelessly left behind the ceramic insulator (?) between the 4 and 7. And this marked the early accidental discovery of the sfeovuern digit. An invention won’t be a legend if he had double checked the display.

You'd probably need a 3 point mounting to better stability of the biggest ciphers like 0, 4, 7 and other that could bend and touch (or reaching a capacitance coupling sufficient to glow passively). Bigger design arises problems that in the common size version are unnoticeable. Why don't try some porcelain enamel (that should resist under vacuum) to avoid unwanted glowing? You can paint both the wires and parts of the ciphers you don't want to glow. This would allow a 3 (or more) points anchoring design.

Nice progress, it seems you successfully solved annealing issue after sealing the tube. Are internal shortcuts due to the ceramic washers? They seem of small diameter compared to the separation they had to keep at the edge of the digits, between each. Would love to see the improvements of the next version!

That "typewriter" sound in the music sounds exactly like high voltage sparking over. It was realistic enough to make me jump a little when it started and turn around to see which project on my bench was blowing up! Lol but true.

Sending you a virtual beer..! Don't know when in the process you discovered the reversed digit, but hey, we all make mistakes, and that's when I would have liked to been able to hand you a beer. So much appears to have gone correctly so far, so congratulations..! Wondering about the shorted digits, was this a driver issue, or something internal to the tube..? And, consider an insulating mask material that could be applied to portions of the cathodes to allow more complex shapes when lit, with the supporting material dark...

I want a clock made with those things! So nice
