I think my problem with it was...it felt unfinished. I don't mind them trying 3D animation but I think it needed a bit more polish, and the story felt kind of like it just stopped when it could have been fleshed out, some parts had too much focus when I wanted to know more about why the mom left, who are these other witches they mentioned, it kind of felt rushed and my first words when the film ended were "what? that's it? wheres the rest??". I do feel really sorry for Goro though

Goro Miyazaki has said that while they hope Ghibli does keep trying 3D animation - a studio and a culture so deeply rooted in 2D animation is never going to go away. His father wasnt interested in the making of this movie despite his growing interest in experimenting with 3D. His passion sits in 2D. Most of this movie was done with freelancers - the ghibli animation team working on Miyazakis current project. Also they have little to no 3D experience.

@@manuelalbertoromero9528 Miyazaki is pretty anti-technology, and his disdain for CGI probably stems from that. Ghibli did not have a CGI division until the 2010s, and when they did, Miyazaki simply said that it was the artist that mattered, not the medium. To me, it seems like he still does not like CGI, but he'll allow some CGI projects by younger animators. Goro took liberties with Tales from Earthsea and saw lack luster results, even hearing from the author that they disapproved of the liberties that were taken. He may have thought, this time around, that he couldn’t get the approval of the author so he would stick as close to the text as he could, even though it left it feeling unfinished. not sure why people find this funny, i honestly agree. it would be even better if they made the film together to strengthen their relationship. and it doesn't have to to be a movie directly about their lives, but more a symbolic representation. i doubt it would happen though. When it comes to family bonds/relationships sometimes the most obvious solution is a challenge to face, and its even harder sometimes to admit to themselves there's a problem in the first place. hard to change a dynamic once its set. Im sure these types of parents want to express love to their children, but because theyre so self critical towards themselves they extend that to their kids, and it feels unnatural to do the opposite. idk if what i said makes sense put into words.

Honestly, I think the character models have potential, but they're missing (at least) one of the core aspects of animation: Squash and stretch. The characters look like they're trying to emulate cartoony styles, but are limited to realistic movements. They're stuck in the limbo of looking like they should be bouncy and fluid but have their feet firmly planted in realism instead, not fulfilling either role fully. It makes a disconnect between what you'd expect to see in a film like this, and what is (not) actually happening.

Goro IS talented! He's a really talented architect! He made puppets for the Earwig team and they're lovely and expressive. I think if he were to channel this to animation his strength would be in puppetry/stopmotion, and he could design beautiful models/puppets and elaborate sets. I think that could work for Ghibli, in fact, it could be Ghibli claiming stopmotion for the Japanese animation field again. I know the Rankin-Bass films are technically already Japanese since a Japanese studio did all the stopmotion work, but how many people know that? It's a shame no one has called this out to him, it's such a cool and unique avenue for Goro to explore, even grumpy Miyazaki might have to give a tacit nod.

Not to mention Hayao not supporting his works. If Goro is still treated like this, what will happen to Ghibli if Hayao retires or goes into the next dimension?

Can we acknowledge that it’s not really a “British” novel as much as it is a Welsh novel. Diana Wynn Jones is influenced by Welsh culture and folklore. After all, Wales is it’s own country with its own language and history. It may not seem important to some but as a small country, it’s important to us, especially when someone from our tiny land gets worldwide recognition. That being said, great video as always Saber, love your content ♥️♥️♥️

There are many similarities but the three satellite countries under English rule have a little bit more independence compared to their Spanish counterparts who Castilla would sooner fight a bloody civil war over than peacefully allow to separate from. I can see it , but at the same time: 1- Studio Ghibli never made a series before iirc? Only stuff to be shown at their own museum and those are more short shorts. 2- A movie setting up a series needs to be broadly advertised as such. 3- The author of the book died, Earwig was her last book. I'm mentioning this because she did have a series of books with characters from Howl's Moving Castle in supporting roles and that looks like it'd be a much better setup for a series. 4- By cutting the helping around the house fluff, this movie could have been condensed into a 45/50 minutes special 1rst episode. With all this said... i do like these characters. The Mandrake is a legitimately mesmerizing fella and Earwig's attitude makes for a very fun protagonist. Was she? She was a little devil that was saying "she controls everyone"... But her control was in essence being actually nice and helpful to everyone - she was ready to help other girls, she was only teasing Custard... In essence her saying "I'll control you" is her way of saying "I'll make you like and care for me!" - and why she wouldn't phrase it like that? She is a small spunky witch but most importantly an orphan. I mean even her pranking Yaga was not out of spite - she had a reason, this woman did hurt her feelings after she tried her best to be a good helper. But other than that? Actually a pretty nice kid. In the end this film suffers the most from being incomplete - like we got only first act, skipped over second 6 month and never saw 3rd act with resolution.

Very fair critique!! This was based on a book that Diana Wynne Jones never got to complete before she passed, and that may be the reason why so many questions are left unanswered. I think that the movie was overall a good time but that it really was a side project/experiment for Ghibli to get into the realm of CGI. It's a short, sweet, made-for-TV movie! In my review, I researched how we got here and dove into Ghibli and Goro's journey to Earwig. It primarily was due to Goro wanting to find a way to have his own voice shine through despite working in a field where his father's shadow looms so large. "Earwig"'s characters look like they're in front of their backgrounds, rather than like they might interact with them, or even be in the same world. And the animation shows some of the problems I see in a lot of beginning CG- the characters move between "rest" and "expression", and everything in the movement between them is all about getting them there, without a lot of space for the idiosyncrasies of actual character.

A few things and miss information in the video/comments: Earwig and the Witch was finished before Diana Wynne Jones died. It was her last completed booked. (Tale of Time city was the one that didnt get finished, just a few chapters shy that her sister finished, and sadly she was working on planning another in the Howl's Moving Castle series) Miyazaki walked out on Goro's Tales of Earthsea for a cigarette, and returned after to finish the movie. He was critical because his son had no animation experience before being allowed to direct a feature film. He also never wanted his son to get into animation/directing like he was doing. [He was filming a documentary at the time that captures all of his thoughts and moods, and yeah he seemed like a tough guy to be around] I also think it also had something to do with his own love of Earthsea as he did art and concepts based on the novels. Miyazaki did have his hand in From Up On Poppy Hill. Maybe too much. Apparently board heads went over Goro and got approval for things from Miyazaki and when he wanted something changed his son didn't want to change, he would go to them to force Goro to change it. It was more of him taking charge on that particular movie. The choice to adapt Earwig, such a short story book was a perplexing choice. They added elements (such as the band and the mother) that were never in the original and they didnt know what to do with them. I agree it was starting to get interesting and then it ended. The book was different in that it didn't bait you with this mother connection. It was just a girl adopted by a witch and demon, and her wanting to learn it so she manipulated her way into doing it, ending on her trying to figure out how to convince her friend from the orphanage to come over. Short and simple. I know your video was short review from last year ( I'm working through your back catalogue), but as I happen to not only love Jones' work, and seen the documentary and did research into this book because the movie perplexed me, I wanted to bring in my two cents.

There were a *lot* of changes to Howl and Sophie in the film. In the book they're both kind of selfish jerks but with honestly good intentions. So in the end, they totally deserve each other. But the film worked really well despite having to skip over and change a lot. Like adding that Sophie has two sisters who use a glamour to exchange places would have been too complicated. And making Mark(le) into a kid instead of an adult love interest for one of the sisters was better since they needed to create a sense of family at the end of the film. It'd have been really fun if they'd made The House of Many Ways instead of Earwig. It also involves a talking cat and a child and a lot of magic. It's also the official sequel to Howl even though he and Sophie play a decently large part in a previous book, making it a kind of trilogy. But that book isn't really important to the story in HoMW so it would have worked. Or grab literally any story from the Crestomancy series. They're all fantastic. Earwig was such a strange choice. Poppy Hill was also a strange choice for a film and it also felt unfinished. It's not even really clear which is the A plat and B plot as they really clash. I liked it a lot but the ending was very abrupt and "wut?" Goro needs to find better source material and flesh out his stories more and omg does he need to absolutely throw CG in the trash where it belongs.

In Goro's defense, if you actually take a moment to look at the endings of Studio Ghibli films, they just... end. We're just more aware of it in this film. Also this was intended to be a TV movie.

As soon as I saw the trailer for this movie, I just said “meh.” I’m gonna be honest. I don’t come to studio ghibli for 3D animation. I come for the absolutely GORGEOUS 2D animation that just looks magical. Another reason why I love ghibli films is because they make me feel like a little kid, which is something that I can’t really find with many other movies. It wasn’t only the 3D animation that was bad about the movie. The movie did not give me that sense of wonder and magic that a normal ghibli film does. It didn’t have fantastic characters, a soundtrack that gets stuck in my head, or even a good plot. I really hope that studio ghibli can get back to making movies that make me feel nostalgic. If not, there are plenty of classics that I can come back to and rewatch all over again! That being said, this movie *was* better than I thought it would be, but it was still missing the studio ghibli magic.

but, as Saber pointed out, Goro got no help from any of the old guard. It didn't feel like a Ghibli film because none of the creators who have spent decades crafting that emotional impact were involved.

I beg to disagree. You don't know their story enough to accuse him of being cold. His son needs to learn his own craft. He needs to learn how to tell a story. His father has a legacy and if he wants to continue that he needs to learn more. If this failed him, directing on his own or even just the movie itself w/o ghibli's name on it then it still fails as a movie. His dad gave him a chance to make a story for himself and gave him the chance to select people, it was his choice not anybody else

I wonder how much of this distaste for the "otaku" stems from the otaku killer back in the nineties in Japan? Like for Westerners, I haven't seen anyone really talk about that monster outside of Japanese anime fans or folks who live in Japan. Akidearest made a video on him recently and I think it gives so much context to Hayao's hatred of "otakus". Edit: "otaku" in this context refers to the cultural definition of otaku in Japan and not as general slang for anime fans that has been co-opted by western audiences. Traditionally "otaku" is an insult like "basement dweller" or "mouth breather". In Japan, it usually indicates a weird unhealthy obsession with anime that interferes with basic functioning in society. There are also undertones that the individual is potentially a threat to others due to their paraphelia and lack of appropriate behavior towards others usually characterized as creepy, predatory or objectifying. To be absolutely clear, being an "otaku" is not being a regular fan of anime/manga in this context.

@@kraziiXIII Haven't watched that video, but yes, much of the distaste of otaku comes from the Otaku Murderer (ironically named Miyazaki). Prior to that, otaku were just seen as kinda weird (and highly marketable to, until anime tried to shift back towards more of a kid audience in the late 80s). Whereas the media frenzy surrounding Miyazaki led to them being labeled as dangerous. Perfect Blue is the quintessential example of a movie that reflects that fear within the cultural zeitgeist.

@@Lucien_M kinda? I think it's a whole different beast though (quite literally lol). Otakus are generally frowned upon due to the stigma that instead of working hard, settling down with a wife and having kids, they're shut ins who watch anime all day and are considered to be lazy which is incredibly frowned upon in Japanese society. Also how if they do have money they spend it on their obsession over anime and their waifu instead of putting it towards more acceptable things like a better house, better food, a car, ect. Otakus from outside of Japan are even more embarrassing because a lot of the time they're also disrespectful towards Japanese culture or often only really see Japan as an anime and shopping central when there's honestly so much more than that to their country. This obviously doesn't apply to all Otakus (I've known a few who consider themselves Otakus but still work hard, have families, ect) but they are likely outside of the stereotype. When it comes to furries... Well a lot of the hate is often directed towards the NSFW side or the very small disgusting zoo side of Furries (That being said most furries are actually SFW furries lol). I don't think there's much of a stereotype for furries being lazy or much like the Otaku stereotypes? At least nothing that I've seen or experienced having been in both the anime and furry community for years lolol
