In this video we should you what we think is the quickest and easiest way to diagnose a basic Purge/Seal EVAP system. Time is money and this is what we think to be the most efficient way to diag a leak on a simple EVAP system.

But if it involves taking the engine apart I'm taking it to someone like you. I know my limitations. I can do just about anything with wood but working on cars is a different kind of "mechanically inclined". I admire the skills guys like you and Eric possess. Keep up the good work. Excellent presentation! I have seen so many of these codes but not really certain how to troubleshoot without the guessing. Now I have a much better understanding.
Simple test Mike. When I was working it took "a while" and one day I realized that just what you've shown us, I could do the same thing. It simplified testing. Most of what I had were vacuum lines, pressure sensors and occasionally a purge valve. We dealt with heat, occasional smog, and accidents. Fleets in L.A. are like that. Great Video!

Gotta love the way you quickly did a screening test, then using the data you came to an hypothesis and then verified the diagnosis. I can think of ways to do this without bidirectional control but it would take imagination and a vacuum source.
There is always more than one way to "skin a cat" right? A few jumper wires, a vacuum source, and a meter would get you there on this car. Wouldn't even need a vacuum source if the car runs! Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor
To that I would add that for a DIY'er, I would try cleaning out the old valve with some carb cleaner, before making a decision to replace it. Cycle the sticking valve with some jumper wires attached to the battery with solvent sprayed into the vacuum hose inlet of the valve. Cheap and easy. Sometimes just spraying carb cleaner into the associated vacuum hose from the easier access of under the hood will do it too, if you spray enough in there and give it time to soak/loosen up. A lot of car owners are just focused on getting the car past the annual state emissions test with as little expense as possible, though obviously a professional repair would require replacing the valve. Another DIY trick you can use in this situation on some older cars is to just fill up your tank, then disconnect your battery for a few minutes to clear the code & check engine light, then run a standard drive cycle for your specific vehicle. Keeping the tank full will get you a Not Ready for the Evap test, but in many localities, they'll let older cars slide with a single Not Ready. (Check your state emissions rules to see if such a tolerance exists where you live. In some states they'll actually let you slide with TWO Not Readys, if your car is old enough, and the check engine light isn't on. ) If the Evap problem still exists, the check engine light will come back on when the fuel tank level decreases to the point that the car can test the evap system, but at least it gets you past the inspection (if you don't live in some strict state like California).
Came across your video from Eric O. at SMA. I watched it about a year ago. Thought it was very thorough, and simply put. Keeping it as simple as possible is always a good thing. Watching it again now, because I have an 03 S10 4.3 with a 449 code. My first check also is always the vent solenoid. Was cycling it on/off and initially was working fine. Til eventually it started acting up, rapid cycling, and unresponsive to commands. I assumed faulty solenoid and replaced it. Initial tested showed working fine, and during the purge/seal test would pull down a vacuum to almost 5 volts and slowly deplete after going back into system seal. After a road test and monitor test, light is back on for 449. After cycling solenoid on/off several times, it fails to respond. I'm assuming the ground side circuit (pcm) is possibly not functioning correctly. After the car sits for a while, I attempted purge/seal test again. It responded and showed expected results. Went to evap vent solenoid and commanded on/off again. And it was responding normally. Any suggestions? Using Autel Maxisys Elite.

I like to pull up fuel trims too to monitor the purge valve opening.. It's interesting see the rich condition from the vapors, then a huge lean condition, vacuum leak. If you have a bad tank pressure sensor you can verify very quickly
Hey GJ auto, fuel trims are great to watch as well. Fuel trims move, but FTP stays put....you are pretty set on that FTP. Newer cars actually do that. They use trims to verify the purge is actually opening! Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor
Exactly John, the PCM will expect to see a deviation in the fuel trims when it cycles the purge open. Not rich or lean, just a change. The rich/lean factor would depend the contents the canister. Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor

Very "Wells" done Mike. Us DIY'ers always ask the same question..."but what if I don't have a bi-directional scanner" ? With the GM we can still check for power, signal and grounds, and hear the "click". I like it.
In my humble opinion, yes sir. A fair number of the viewers are people like me who are beginners. We watch RU-vid to learn more in general, (like me) or we're here because our car broke and were looking for information to fix that particular problem with basic tools. DVOM, test light etc. I have realized from watching other great RU-vid channels that some systems will require a high end scanner and/or scope. Even that I can afford such items (I do have a few scanners and the basic series 2000 PICO) I can't justify more expensive equipment for the few times I'd need one. If a case presents itself where one could troubleshoot a system with some basic tools that would be great. It may not bring immediate viewing, but your library of material that included the use of basic tools I think would attract many viewers over time. Thank you for the opportunity to comment.
Hey Wyatt, save a search on your local craigslist (or one nearby) for "autel" or whatever scan tool you like. I did this about 18 months ago as I couldn't afford the $1200 or more these things cost. Then about 3-6 months went by, I had even forgotten about it, when an Autel DS708 popped up and I got an email out of the blue. Not a latest and greatest but I ended up picking it up for $225 with a near current update. I'm now making money on the side with the knowledge from these guys. There are deals out there to be had but you just need to know how to find them and then jump when one pops up. I also just picked up a Redline Smoke Pro smoke machine with all the accessories on eBay for $450 (about half price) and put it to use the same day it showed up on UPS. Just have to watch and save searches on eBay and Craigslist.
Yes sir. You just need an account and you can hit "save search" and then go to your list of saved searches and make sure it's set to notify you. You will get occasional emails that aren't always relevant (the CL spammers sometimes get through) but it's worth it to be the first to jump on a good deal should it come around.

Excellent help! I used this to help me focus on the 3 parameters for small evap leak (no cel but repeat gas cap message) on 2010 Express 6.0 I know it's different vehicle but the PID data doesn't vary that much and I was able to see 4 PID relationships when purge commanded. Thank you!

Mike, what is the red colored object you are holding in your left hand (you stuck into the connector) when you are testing the vent solenoid with a test light in your right hand?
Really, could be! Many of ours end up with rust in the solenoid. To the point where the body of the solenoid actually rusts enough to crack its plastic that is holding it in! Rust can build up a ton of force. Mike Becker, Technical Services Instructor
I have a 06 impreza that has had all valves on the tank replaced along with the charcoal canister, I'm still getting a p0457 code. No leaks, purge solenoid replaced and canister vent replaced. What would you suggest I do next???

Hey Jason, In this video I was using a the Snap On Verus. It really depends on your budget. You can get into a Launch or Autel tool for a good price. The Autel Maxisys tools are good. Launch also has some lower end "full function" tools. Expect to pay over 1000$ for something decent though. Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor

Hey Lafayette Huston, i would change your approach. You've already spent quite a bit on parts and haven't fixed it. I think it may be time to have a tech look at it. Great video, how do you test if we don't have a higher end scanner tool? Do you know any lower end scanner tools that would allow you to turn on and off the vent? I would like to be able to do what you're doing by turning off the vent to trouble shoot. I'm pulling my hair out with my 2015 chevy silverado. We changed out the solenoid valve and the error code i'm getting points to the fuel pressure sensor you mentioned, fingers crossed that it's it but if not i don't know what else to do. Got a question...stumbled across your video after I bought a 98' Mustang GT...it runs pretty damn good, but it has a check engine light. I put a code reader on it and it said System lean bank 1. It has a fairly strong emission smell with no fuel leaks that I can see. Checked some vacuum lines on the purge valve and are pretty deteriorated. Also a 2 1/2" rubber hose on the PCV valve is deteriorated. Haven't checked the O2 sensors yet. The car has aftermarket x-pipe exhaust with only 2 O2 sensors instead of 4. Is there any advice you could give me?...would greatly appreciate it👍
When i check the purge solenoid with a mityvac ,I hold pressure on the vaccum side but not on the other side of solenoid, is that a normal condition . Im not able to vaccum more the 5 on the side that goes to the tank only on the vaccum i can hold as mich as i put on it . Should it hold vaccumm on both sides when i test with mityvac?

@NGK Technical Training Mike, EVERYTIME I perform the EVAP Purge/Seal test (using Tech 2) on my 2004 Trailblazer EXT LT 4.2L 6 cyl. my car STALLS immediately when I HIT THE SEAL BUTTON, and all vacuum in tank(I usually pull vac between -7 to -10 inH20, that's at 60% command on the Purge) goes immediately back to 0.00 inH20 and the FTP sensor voltage goes down from 3-4 volts back to atmospheric 1.5v. If I have car running and just seal the system, NO Pressure builds up like in your vid. I can hear vent clicking in the back when commanded, and purge is working because I can feel the engine react when I start purging more and more. EVAP Diag seems to clearly be my nemesis! Any thoughts, suggestions, remedies, tips, ANYTHING? Thanks in advance
Try plugging the vent hose after the vent solenoid. Just because the solenoid is clicking doesn't mean it's actually closing! Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor
@@GoTechTraining Will do. Can't pinch off, due to ALL these EVAP hoses are all those pre-bent hard plastic hoses. Got to find something to plug into end without disturbing the inside o-ring or breaking tabs. Hey, Mike. When you use the bi directional control, does that mean you bypass the pcm? So, if the pcm would not run the test because of a short to voltage or to ground, you woud be able to do it bi directionally.
Hi Littlebear Gaming, great question. When us use bi-directional control the scan tool is telling the PCM to perform a function. It is not bypassing the PCM. The scan tool is only submitting a request to the PCM. If the PCM is unable to, then the bidirectional control would fail. Mike Becker, Senior Technical Services Instructor
If purge is shut and stuck close and vent is open, all while driving, will vapor be suck through vent solenoid to the point it builds up fuel in the vent solenoid? What are other possibility that fuel is found in the vent solenoid?
Hey Padrote Lopez, if you have fuel in the vent solenoid I'd be guessing at an overfilled gas tank...that's really the only reason. You could maybe have a plugged hose somewhere forcing pressure from the tank to the vent, but overfilling the tank is way more likely. Mike Becker, Senior Technical Services
Hi Mike, great explanation of the Evap system diagnosis. I have a code P0446 [Evaporative Emission System Vent Control Circuit] on my 2002 Toyota Camry 3.0 Liter Engine. Since I do not have the sophisticated test equipment like you do, is there a way to know more about what that code means? I checked the purge valve power and it is working and clicking when applied.
Hey Jim, that's a tough one. Old Toyota EVAP can be very hard to diagnose. You're dealing with a vent solenoid code, which is part of the canister if I remember right on those cars. Do I understand rightly that the tankpressure is a reflection of the pressuresensor voltage, and that the tanksolenoid and purge both are valves of which the latter is scalable (in steps of 10%)? Thanks and greetings from the Netherlands!
Hey M. Torn, correct the PCM/scan tool translate the pressure sensor voltage to give us a parameter in pressure. The vent solenoid on the tank is typically on/off only where the purge is typically scaled in whatever percentage the PCM is calling for. That clear it up!? :) Mike Becker, Senior Instructor
