honestly, as someone that has brushed elbows with old money a bunch of times at galas and charity balls, etc., the obsession with "quiet luxury" makes me laugh. none of these people really know that true money looks like, nor does it mean the people that make that money have style or taste. the one thing i've learned is that you can always tell when these young women aspire to look like old money. ALWAYS. it's a fascinating thing to have someone (who in one year will earn more than my entire career three times over) ask me where i got my dress and see them write down "the clearance rack of jc penney" in their notes app. idk, just some more brain food

There's a difference between people who chase wealth and put effort to look more expensive and front that they earn more than they actually do and people who just like the classic, timeless, but very chic style that old money from 80's had... There's nothing wrong with enjoying a fashion style. If anything it benefits women to embrace old money aesthetics be it makeup or fashion, it's flattering, it elevates, it looks classy and chic and never trashy like what people into glitz wear. And you can wear affordable clothing brands that give old money vibe rather wasting money on expensive designer stuff which is both great for the environment ( I'm not referencing shein of course) and pocket. Rather than people down themselves in logos as a free advertisement billboard, rather than girls looking unnatural with harsh makeup that takes away from their natural beauty young women are bringing back femininity... It's no different than when fashion enthusiasts tried to copy runway looks wid mid range more affordable brands. It's a much healthier habit as many aren't trying to front like they come from money or obsess over money. It's just a little fantasy for girls to enjoy....
@skrittle555
@skrittle555 6 месяцев назад
@@LovelyLittleLillies "Affordable" and "great for the environment" really don't go together as much as you think they do. Sustainable and ethically made clothing costs more. An aran sweater handmade in Ireland goes for about $380 new. Clothing in general used to be produced more ethically and the price reflected that. If you couldn't afford it, you simply bought the materials and made it yourself. The rise in fast fashion has made clothing accessible for all, but it has come at a cost, and that cost is environmental damage. Our consumerist culture has developed around fast fashion too, so as it goes with planned obsolescence, your shirt isn't designed to last more than one season as it will be out of fashion by then anyway. It's horrible. If more people planned their lives around investment pieces and buying quality items that would last rather than following the latest trends, we would be much better off.

I agree with this! Which is why I don’t really understand Zoe’s take on this. Everything that is popular doesn’t necessarily render it problematic. I think the value of old money style is that the style is literally “priceless”. Meaning it’s fashionable value, monetary value, and aesthetic value are all also “priceless”. There’s the irony and it’s fun to play with. These styles ie, monochrome looks, preppy, or classic silhouettes without looking flashy are worthy investments. And it’s always been how I’ve shopped. So much so I’ve had v-neck sweaters from like JCrew that I’ve owned for nearly 10 years. Throw them over a pair of slacks and some heels and voila! A lewk! It’s an answer to fast fashion Zoe. It’s ok to like something you know?

anything that is "luxury" is usually made in sweatshops just as bad a h&m and shein. just bc they are expensive, doesn't mean there is anything luxurious about it. maybe SOME are made ethically, but a lot are not. and for me, that takes the dream out of it. i don't care if you are wearing gucci etc , if you knew how it was made. there is nothing to strive for. it's just a scam. i think most people who fixate on trends, tend to have a lot of money tp spare. even if you purchase from h&m - bc trends mean - to always buy new. people who fixate on trends tend to not care about slow fashion and fair work environments. you can have WHATEVER style you like, but it is *interesting* to say the least... how people who are going for this "classic old money look" aren't necessarily buying clothes from second hand OR shops like indigo luna or similar. - where you know exactly WHO is making your clothes and how and from quality fabrics that doesn't poison your skin. ---- no people who go for quiet luxury are just doing it for the same old boring reason: *to show off that they belong to the elite club of WEALTHY people* baaaaaah. boring.

I prefer the "classic" fashion aesthetic wich is basically "quiet luxury"/"old money" on a budget. So for ex I buy basic classic pieces from discount retailers like a black turtleneck is still a black turtleneck whether you spend $1000 or $1. I have some amazing pieces I got from walmart and b/c the style is classic it will never go out of style and it will never break the bank! And honestly NOBODY'S CHECKING THE TAG INSIDE MY SHIRT!

I agree with everything except boring. There was a time minimalism was in fashion and it was very chic to me. I never saw what gen Z was seeing with y2k and mcbling trend, why they brought back everything that was ugly about 2000's or why people were into tacky stuff. Never embraced anything Kardashians pushed into trend ether, not the bbls (how long did people expect these unnatural looking bodies to stay in trend?) not the harsh contour makeup. Natural always best. I find that oftentimes people who like tacky clothes often have tacky within themselves that's why they embrace it, like women who wear thick, spider lashes and fake nails length of an inch. Can't teach these types of girls natural beauty that they already have... And just like Jersey shore they settle with questionable men

Well said! European fashion has seen large logos/walking billboards as tacky for decades. I've personally never understood the love (with rare cases where the logo is tasteful) quality pieces for a longer lasting wardrobe just makes sense. Less time wasted shopping as things break so quickly, more time to focus on other things in life. Also, a lot less waste. The concept doesn't need to come with the price tag. You can still get relatively affordable quality pieces that are not couture. Focus on other things that make you a better human being and that confidence will shine through!

I have mixed feelings, because I wear simple clothes since high school. Until recently I wasn't able to afford to buy everything in good quality, so it was my way to look "higher class" than I was (basically what's happening now). But it never made me feel good, because I still knew that it was a poor quality t-shirt. On the other hand, if you can find these simple clothes from natural fabrics (cotton/ wool) in every shop, because it's a trend, it might make it easier for girls who were like me just like 5 years ago. 😊 (I try to limit my clothes so everything fits together and is comfy but "elegant" looking, I sometimes buy my favourite shirt/pants in 3 basic colours. I'm ND so I'm gonna choose my favourites every time anyway, so I might as well have multiples of them lol)

When ever I shop I think to my self is there anything i can where this with? Will this last me a long while? and if I truly love this piece or I'm just interested in the image of my inspiration? I'm still trying to build my sense of fashion with what I have at the same time building my confidence. So to me it's sad that these people are trying to imitate something most can not without thinking of the reproductions of their actions and if they truly love the style. It is no one's fault that people go and buy stuff that they can't afford. Quiet luxury is just playing clothing. Without any labels on it, you could find out anywhere. If you're really good at it, you could go into secondhand stores and look like it came from a very expensive store. complaining about nepotism and whatever else it's annoying. Saying that it's bad that your parents worked their butts off, Trying to make a better living for you in the future. So that you wouldn't struggle is bad,That's insane.

You and the people in the comments are missing the point of quiet luxury. The important point is quiet luxury clothes are natural fabrics which means actually looking at tags for quality over quantity and making more selective shopping choices. Which means health for the people wearing the fabric, and the environment for multiple reasons. It is also cost effective. The clothes are better for the planet when made, they are liked and last for longer. And is a more appropriate normal way to dress with basic luxurious and yes necessary basic items that go together aimlessly, as opposed to following tacky cheap polyester trends that feel horrible to wear and don’t breath, are not healthy to wear for ourselves or the environment. Silk, cotton, cashmere, wool and leather basics do go on sale on off season, so there is no excuse to not have self-control and use some conscious thought and strategy when shopping and invest in natural material luxury basics that aren’t necessarily a brand, but feel and look luxurious, breathe, are healthy, and are better quality. Dressing well, luxuriously and healthily is not only for ‘wealthy’. Quiet luxury is for everyone. It’s got nothing to do with ‘looking rich’ that is not the point of quiet luxury. The point is the choice of the materials of the clothes themselves. It is a better way to dress that has a multitude of intelligent important benefits that should be supported.

I was way too restrictive which sometimes led to binge eating and purging. I am now diagnosed with hashimoto's disease where I am being asked to gain weight to reduce the severity of the situation. I am also having amenorrhea. Due to my approaching exams, I am so tired nd stressed out that I can't even work out. I feel quite guilty tbh. hello there, I thought I might say this since u mentioned your hight and weight goal and tbh it is too much to lose from your current weight, like very hard to get to and too hard to maintain since it isn't natural in the first place, so I hope you can re-think your goal. About the amenorrhea more than exams it's about how unstable your body is and maybe you pushed it to a survival mode that something like exams In middle school would cause it. oh and another information...for a woman to have a healthy regular (comes every set amount of time with small variations) she needs 23% body fat, so be mindful if that as well, even if you got less than that , make sure it isn't that far off.

I'm very basic with clothes, but I keep some nice clothes for parties. People are judgemental with how I dress so mom had to help me with keeping a small blouse collection. I am always picky with 100% cotton tshirts and high percentage of cotton jeans for work. (Welding)

As someone who doesn’t have TikTok (my brother does but that doesn’t matter) I guess you could feel left out but I’ve never been “in” with the trends because I never felt a need to (and my mother probably wouldn’t let me buy all these new things). I’ve basically been oblivious to all the trends because I don’t know they are alive, don’t feel like you need a certain aesthetic to fit in.

Sofia and ellie are both new money, not old. Old money is over MANY generations. The rockafellers and Vanderbilts are still considered new money. The Windsors and Rothschild families are old money. It's centuries old. Du Pont is like the line imo - they started amassing wealth in the early 1800s.

The "old money" trend: dressing like my granny, and she's 83. Oh no, scrub that, she still knows how to wear bright and fun pieces. So sad seeing young girls slaving themselves just to dress like a boring boomer 😣

Wait anyone else notice how she contradicts herself in other videos, first she says "you don't need slim legs" and posts lots of slim legs videos like make up your mind, I realised all of this but said nothing until I watched this video then I was like ooo I guess I was right: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LlDMweq_in8.html I honestly like some of her content I won't lie but like please make up your mind so you won't get called out. I belive in second chances so gurl change because I and other are subscribed for a reason! For example this video was AMAZING and INFORMATIVE but other ones about diet especially are where you seem to contradict yourself often, no hate just stating my opinion. :)

Logos on clothing or anywhere on your clothing for that matter, is free advertisement for the greedy companies…after you spent $$$$$ on their products. Not to mention it is tacky. I love soft, clean, minimalist, classic outfits which can cross over into the old money aesthetic. But i know i am a human with a preference for what i wear, not an aesthetic…

Old money, but without money 😅😅 quiet luxury that's not always luxurious. I know some old money that have terrible style and look more like a really poor person. They're busy making money, they don't care about fashion.

I don’t see a problem with the quiet luxury aesthetic. It must really be tough staying mad about literally… everything, anything. I’m a pediatrician. Since I take care of adolescents, what I’ve appreciated about this aesthetic trend is that kids aren’t as hard pressed to buy logos, to feel left out by not being able to afford classic looking items. A button down styled over loose jeans with a pair of loafers and a bucket hat? One of my patients wore that the other day-picked everything up from a local thrift store. And her family cannot afford “luxuries”. But she looked luxury. Those pieces will last a lifetime. What is “old money” about this aesthetic is that “old money” does not look “trendy” and it isn’t a trend. What actually keeps old money going is that they aren’t frivolous spenders. They invest in classic, timeless pieces as much as they invest in keeping generational wealth. It’s hardly something to discourage. And I think many of us can learn the value of quality shopping, spending, and investing from “quiet luxury”.
