This by far has been my coziest project yet! New essentials for a cloudy day: a cup of tea, a good book, and a QUILT COAT. This also turned out to be quite an easy project, so if you're a beginner, I'd definitely recommend trying this out! Remember to tag #sewwithemily on IG if you do!

Are you going to quilt it or tie it? When you wash them, the batting will fall apart if they aren’t quilted together. You can do it by machine or by hand. But you need to quilt it every few inches. I’ve seen some batting that said 10”, but I would do it every 4-6”. Just a bit of advice from an old quilter. Super cute coats!

Haven’t finished the video yet, but all those quilts for $15 😲!!! Couldn’t touch one in a thrift store for that price where I’m at. Great haul, sooo many possibilities! 😍

Your coats are absolutely lovely. But as a quilter I thought you should know that you will not be able to wash or dry clean your coats. The batting will separate and shift and ball between the layers. You need to stabilize the batting by one of 2 methods. The little ties or sewing through all three layers. If you don't you might find over time the batting will stretch and distort. Especially if left on a hanger. Just thought you might want to know for future designs.

Yes, secure those layers together. The batting you purchased should have instructions as to how closely together the batting must be stitched/tied. Beautiful coat, great design, enjoyable video! I liked the second one best because of the black binding. It really anchors the many colors of the quilt and outlines the wonderful design.

Love the idea, and both jackets. Second on is my favorite. Suggestion for the future: if you want to take apart a quilt, wash it first. Washing raw edge seams of an older quilt could lead to some of the seams coming apart. This is much less likely if is still together in the form of a quilt, rather than the two pieced sides without batting. Great project. Great job! Thank you for the video.

Make more videos. I love them. I am a quilter and the fabric from that quilt is 30's prints. They were flour sac reproductions. I got a chuckle with you mentioning Lancaster PA. It is where my friends and I travel and shop at the Amish quilting stores. So Fun. They pronounce it weird. It is almost like you don't here the A vowels.

Please make sure that you actually quilt this coat meaning that you take your sewing machine and so across the quilt squares or diamonds as you prefer, so that it will all stay together. If you don't, when you wash it, the batting will disintegrate. Your work is just beautiful. You did a great job.

I cannot believe you found all those quilts for so little! Quilts can take hundreds of hours to create and even now with them coming back in style for various uses it’s wild that you can just find them in a thrift store. We still (as a society) undervalue craftsmanship so much. Also I hope you were able to throw them in the wash before you laid them on your bed to film because I got really stressed about bed bugs for you from that packed thrift store! These are so beautiful and it seems you could get another whole jacket out of what’s left. Oh, one question! Which quilting foot did you use?

I find quilts for $2.50 at a textile waste warehouse. If they are antique or in good condition I try and resell it as is, but if they are not antique or anything special ( some are machine made or mass produced) and they are damaged I will use them for crafting.

I like the way you cut it out. I’ve been noshing on it for weeks, because I wanted to keep the sewing to a minimum and perhaps get the edging that’s already on the blanket/quilt in position so that it becomes the hem/end of pieces. I may use this idea and still break it up into pieces but it’s given me a path. Thank you!

Make a reversible jacket or coat from the Tied Quilt. Reversible is really easy to make. Have you thought about washing these quilts before putting time and effort into the new project? I would hand wash in mild shampoo, baby shampoo is good as it's fairly neutral and doesn't foam too much
