I’m so happy I waited for this before I bought the pounce pad. It looks tons easier than how I did my last quilt, but I think I would get stressed with chalk dust. I may have to ponder this longer. You’re new pattern, I feel you should wait to release to all of us until you are 100% ready. We can all sit and anticipate like kids waiting for the best gift in the whole world to be available to us. My last thought, we all know you have a life! We all love you or we wouldn’t be here every week., but I promise if you can only do one video a week, your fans will be here watching. We will all be here if Lives are only once a month. You are a personable, kind, and extremely knowledgeable person whom we all look forward to spending our time with, but we know you have lots to do when you’re not in front of the camera. Have a great week, see next Friday!

I actually just bought a pounce pad for possibly doing Sashiko and I want to try that reverse quilting (not sure that’s what you call it) that you lay a sold knit over the quilting cotton and cut away parts and hand stitch the edges of the knit fabric. Anyway, thought I may use the pounce with those stencils. But now I’m excited to try this method for machine quilting. I think the messiness would definitely be annoying and I hate that chalk feel on my hands but it seems like it’s worth all that. One thing I thought maybe you could try is to pounce it then take it outside and very gently shake it like you would a rug, but more of a gentle wiggle. Or what about taking a pet hair roller and lightly running it over the top to pick up the stray chalk dust. Not sure if that would erase the line. But like you said, it’s more the suggestion of the lines, you don’t have to be exact. The parts that are missing or too light just sort of wing it based on the rest of the design. I don’t think this is for people who like to be extremely precise. But I do think this could be for me! Thanks for the video!

I am one of several pattern testers for a company that publishes bag patterns. We receive the pattern, review for wording, continuity, illustrations, etc. Then we make the pattern, again checking for any problems. We respond to the company with our changes through Adobe. This company is known for the accuracy and clarity with their patterns. I would strongly suggest you have people test your pattern before you publish. The owner of the company I test for was surprised at a simple wording error that she had missed when I reported it to her. I don’t think you’d be sorry you took the extra time.

Hi Miriam... I use pounce A LOT! You don't need water .. they make pink and blue chalk for the pounce too... You need to PRESS it HARD once "charged"... to charge it smack it against your hand pad size down... then swipe hard... for that size stencil decide it is still enough to cover the whole stencil... by pressing harder it uses a bit more chalk charged on your pad of the chalk dispenser... to your watchers... there is a iron away type and a rinse or wash away bit... once quilted I spritz all gone before washing and gifting... hope this helps ya! My pounce pad experience was about the same. I could not handle the chalk dust everywhere and was concerned about it building up in the sewing machine. Now when I use a stencil I use light blue washout markers and trace the stencil on light fabric. On dark fabric I use tailor chalk or a chalk pencil line. Much less messy. I recently discovered the Hera tool which makes a faint crease on dark fabric. I am advanced in free motion quilting and often I just mark guidelines on the quilt. Your videos are charming and make me smile!

I think it would be beneficial to make the alphabet quilt, or even have some other folks "test" sew the quilt or a few blocks, to see if the directions are clear and accurate. As to the "lives," with all that is on your plate right now, maybe once a month is more achievable without over-stressing yourself. Several big name quilters I follow do one a month. Pace yourself so you don't burn out or lose your wonderful enthusiastic attitude.😊❤

I've used the pounce pads before, and while there's truth to everyone's complaints about them, I still like them. It takes some experimenting to get the right amount of chalk, and I always trace the pattern with my finger to understand the path of my stitching. It's definitely given me a little more confidence in my FMQ. It's still a real work in progress for me. All part of the process. I can always step away if it's not going well, too.

Unrelated to this video, but wanted to say thanks for the tip on basting a quilt on a table. I'm relatively new to quilting and have a large square dining table (bar height) and using this to baste my most recent quilt last week was a game changer! My knees and lower back have never thanked me so much but, more to the point, the layers were much better sandwiched and I'm not getting puckers on the back of my quilt (half way through quilting, touch wood!). I hate eating at my dining table but it is my new best friend for quilting lol, so thanks heaps.

Just another idea from a friend... Make your own design on tracing paper. Take the thread and bobbin out of your machine. Sew your pattern on the tracing paper without thread. Then use your ponce pad to transfer to your fabric. Haven't tried it yet, but have the tracing paper. My friend does it all the time. Also, I would like to see the pattern for the letters come out before you make your quilt as I have a project in mind that has a time frame. A long-arm quilter, I have used, marks the quilt with a slightly wet pounce. You see the line very well and when you get your quilted quilt back; you wash out her pounce lines. I did that once. Only I used powdered tempura chalk on a lone star quilt in the big spaces all around the quilt. Didn’t wash out very well! My son-in-law loved it anyway. It eventually did wash out.

Hey Miriam, thank you for your wonderful videos! I have a question about free motion quilting. I just purchased a pounce pad and stencil and was wondering how you start and stop when using your stencils. I have only used straight lines in my quilting, and I just start and stop in the batting outside of the quilt top. Thanks for sharing all of your talent, energy, and happiness with all of us in the quilting community!
@StitchObsessed
@StitchObsessed 17 дней назад
Hi Mary! 👋 I also try to start and stop in the batting when FMQ, but when I can’t do that, I’ll do a few backstitches “in the ditch” or seam of a block and then start FMQ from there. Then you can’t see those backstitches on the front of the quilt and they’re held secure.

Hi Miriam, just finished watching and loved the design you chose. I have used a pounce pad for a queen size quilt. I love how it turned out but felt I was doing a lot more work to accomplish it. For me maybe because it was a big quilt, I could only pounce one at a time because as I moved th quilt under my machine, if I pounced more than one stencil at a time the clack would come off. I had a big table ext to my machine so I didn’t have to drag the big quilt so far. I am proud of the outcome but if you have a way to do a whole row for example please let us know. Love your videos. ❤

Great Video!! I love the stencil pattern you are using on the Gingham Quilt!! That is so darn CUTE!!. I am wondering could you trace it with fabric marker instead of chalk? I do not like the idea of chalk (I will be the one who spills the bag and the thought of getting it all over my hands does not sound like fun. I know this channel is how you make your money, however, you need to take time for yourself and do whatever projects or things you need to do. You can not run yourself down trying to do too much!! Your followers will still be here if there is only 1 video a week. Live videos can be maybe once or twice a Month if you feel you have the time to do that!. Please take care of yourself, slow down and just do what you can without burning yourself out. Have a great weekend!!

I purchased some quilting thread second hand, ok, A LOT of quilting thread, from a woman who was getting out doing her own quilting. Along with that thread I got 2 pounce pads and a STACK of stencils. TBH I had no clue what a pounce pad was, let alone how to use it. I tried it, but I made more of a mess than anything. I may give it a second go, so thank you for showing this! If I were to trace the stencil, what brand/type marker would you recommend? I have had the worst luck with marking pens and pencils. They dont mark, tips break, and resharpening results in the tip breaking again...not sure what Im doing wrong. Side note, I tried gluing a binding before sewing and it worked great! Thanks for your videos!!❤

Oh that’s awesome! I bet you got a great deal on the thread and notions! 😍 so the marking pen I use is the Dritz mark-be-gone pen/marker. It has blue ink that washes away with water. Wow that pounce is amazing & might just get one & try it. Went to MSQC & it shows the stencil with the pounce pad but it didn't specify if it was included so I'm guessing it`s separate. You did an amazing job, Thank you. Love the alphabets quilt pattern but i think it might be best if you make it first as not to get any tail feathers ruffled LOL if something is not correct then you can fix it, just saying not trying to be negative or mean. Thanks for the video on pounce pads and how they work. I've wondered about them. Having used chalk to mark quilting lines on quilts, I find them to be messy and get the chalk all over me and the sewing machine. The pounce technique seems to require a lot of trial and error to get everything just right. What do others have to say?
@StitchObsessed
@StitchObsessed Месяц назад
Yeah that seems to be the general consensus! haha They CAN work, but it can be tricky getting the chalk just right, and then getting it to stick the fabric is a whole other story! I'm still going to play around with it and see if I can find a better way to use it! It's fun to experiment! 💖

I wonder how it would work if you lightly spray the quilt with spray starch in a small area, then apply the chalk with the pounce pad and then apply some heat to set it??? It sounds and looks great but I’d want to try to get the chalk to stay. I like this idea bc I have many stencils but I’ve always just copied the design onto my quilt using a mechanical pencil. My templates are plastic so this would save a lot of time 😉
@StitchObsessed
@StitchObsessed Месяц назад
Well the blue chalk can’t be ironed or it’ll set into the fabric, and probably be tough to wash out! But I’ve heard from several people to try hairspray so I’m going to do some experimenting and do another video on what I find works! 🤓

Random question- could you use the other stencil (full cut-out, not screen style) and trade with a fabric pen instead of chalk? I love the ‘trace’ quilting ease, as a beginner, but want to minimize the ‘messiness’ of chalk. Your thoughts?
@StitchObsessed
@StitchObsessed 24 дня назад
You definitely can! I've done that before, it's just a bit time consuming and you need to find a pen tip that can actually fit in the little slit. I used my Dritz Mark-B-Gone pen and it was a tight fit haha
@angelahomicz1813
@angelahomicz1813 28 дней назад
I’ve never had success with the chalk pad. It does work in the sense that it transfers the design from the stencil, but for me, the design doesn’t stay on long enough to actually sew. By the time I get to my machine it’s already rubbed off on my shirt from carrying it or it being pooled on my lap as the end goes into the needle. What little design is salvaged dusts up under the needle as I sew. Am I doing something wrong? I’d love it to be as easy as it is for you.

I’m not even going to watch your video bc I have tried using the pounce pads, too. They are a giant mess, chalk powder everywhere. It gets on your quilting gloves, hands, sewing machine, transfers to the rest of your quilt. I will never use this stuff again. They “claim” it won’t hurt your sewing machine, but every time that needle goes through a chalk line you are transferring chalk into your bobbin case area. No way am I taking a chance of gunking up my machine that I’ve spent thousands of dollars on.

You need to get a beta tester or two. Someone to try out your pattern before you publish it. It isn’t unusual for “professional quilters” to have people who do some of the piecing of their demonstration quilts for them. I know you are working on a tight budget, but a successful pattern launch will be a good help to your credibility, and any fee you may need to pay the beta testers will be a business expense, which will be useful during tax season. In short, start thinking of ways to work smarter, not harder.
