When I was in high school (way back in the 1970's) the Home-Ec teacher would have us draw a design on plain paper and then unthread the sewing machine and practice the designs by sewing on those lines. Basically sewing, but with no thread in the machine. It was very helpful for hand-brain coordination. Miriam, I am loving this series! I am a new subscriber of about 4-5 months and have really enjoyed watching all of your videos! Keep it up girl! Thank you so much for your videos and you are a GREAT teacher!
@StitchObsessed
@StitchObsessed 5 месяцев назад
Yes! I've done that before too, or you can do the same thing with a practice quilt sandwich. Just remove the thread so you can get the feel of moving the layers of the quilt under the needle. I have heard that some of the newer computerized machines won't let you stitch without thread, which is a bummer! Thank you so much for the wonderful compliment, Paula! I really appreciate it!

I have quilting gloves that cover just the thumb, index and middle fingers, and wrist. They are much cooler. I got mine on Amazon several years ago at a reasonable price. I looked them up just now and the price is a lot higher, maybe four times higher. I have no idea why, but I wouldn’t pay that amount now. I really like the meander pattern you demonstrated. I have two Bernina’s with BSR’s (stitch regulators), but I haven’t used them much. I like to quilt my small projects with built-in decorative stitches.

I've seen those type of gloves, but yes, I hate spending a fortune on something like that haha! The curse of being a frugal quilter, right? This is an excellent free motion design. I like the density you use because when the quilts are washed over and over, it creates the same sort of texture as some of my vintage quilts. I used to make quilts for Kids with Cancer which was an organization in South Carolina. I used a similar design because I thought it went so well with the modern quilt patterns I was using. The best part is pulling them out of the dryer after washing them to see the crinkle effect! I can see why you chose to use it on the latest quilt you just finished with the African fabric.

Thank You Miriam, this quilting design looks easy enough to do. I haven't done any free motion quilting yet. But I think I can practice doing this one. Yes, you like your quilting to be pretty dense. Looks lovely, but tighter than I would like. As you say, that is the beauty of quilting: you do you, and that is correct, no matter what anyone else says. Also nice is the quilting community because nearly all quilters will advise people to do what feels right to them. This art, not manufacturing.

27:14 question-when quilting do you sew all 3 pcs together first or how do you keep the backing batting and top together?
@StitchObsessed
@StitchObsessed 4 месяца назад
So when you go to quilt your quilt, you need to first baste your layers together. This just means you do one of a few techniques to hold the layers together while quilting. My preferred way is to use Elmers school glue to glue the layers together. I did a full tutorial on how to glue baste here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9BrbztHwh-A.html

How do you decide what color thread to quilt with? I've done 2 quilts now with a lot of black in them (shashing) the blocks are lighter or multi colored. I used off white on one but I'm not overly happy with it. The one I'm about to quilt also has a lot of black in it. Would the variegated thread be better? I love this free motion pattern and can't wait to try it. I'm still learning !!! Love your instructions!
@StitchObsessed
@StitchObsessed 6 месяцев назад
That’s a REALLY good question! So, when I’ve had drastically different colors of sashing, I’ve used dark thread for the darker fabrics and light thread for the lighter fabrics. Variegated thread is another good choice! If you want to stick with just one color of thread, I would pick the color that is dominate in the quilt top. It’s really up to you and what looks good to YOUR eye. I hope that helps! 💖
