Welcome to my speed run 😁😂😁. Watch this sped up speed run as I make this quilt as you go, self binding, summer quilt with flannelette batting from start to finish. Then enter the giveaway to win it.
This is a 60x60 inch Brigid's Cross quilt.
For the batting I used flannelette as it does not need to be quilted at all and makes a great light summer quilt. I did quilt it lightly but the fact that I didn't actually need to saved me a ton of time.
I also saved time by rough cutting my pieces and then squaring everything up after each step. This allowed me to stitch faster because, I didn't have to worry about the risks of fabric shifting.
And let me just sing the praises of 505 spray. It's a great alternative to pinning and it worked really well for this quilt since all the pieces were already clinging to the batting without a lot of trouble to begin with. You'll notice in the video that the only pins I used were to mark beginning and end points for the quilting step on each section.
And lastly self-binding. I didn't have to take any time to make binding fabric or attach it, which can be a tedious step. By starting with an oversize piece of backing and trimming after the quilting step I was able to just focus on sewing it down as one single step.
I'm also going to make note of the fact that I sew for a living, so the amount of actual waste from this challenge piece is minimal. Most of the end pieces will be incorporated into other projects, including some that will find their way into my Etsy shop. I'll also use some of the left over fabric for other project and other quilts.
