Finishing your quilts on your home sewing machine with beautiful results is absolutely possible with rulers! We've already done a video on using rulers on your longarm to create beautiful, precise straight lines, now we're showing you how to get started on your domestic sewing machine.
Stephanie loves rulerwork quilting because it makes her look better than she is. When you use them, your ruler foot is always in contact with the side of the ruler, which means you can get perfectly precise straight lines and curves every time.
In this video Stephanie shows you the tools you need to get started and gives you a few exercises you can try on a fat quarter quilt sandwich to get the hang of rulerwork before you give it a go on your quilt.

I am having a problem with the fabric and the ruler NOT moving and it just bunches up, could this be that I have the wrong foot? I am using a brother machine and I love the way you take your time explaining everything, because I am really frustrated
@QuiltAddictsAnonymous
@QuiltAddictsAnonymous 3 года назад
Make sure you have dropped your feed dogs and are using quilting gloves. That always helps me move easily. You may also have to raise the ruler foot up slightly on the shank. It may be too low and trapping the quilt sandwich. If it is none of those things, check your tension. Sometimes you can end up with a thread nest below and the fabric gets stuck.

Thank you for your demonstration. I was wondering if you could use the quilt ruler and ruler foot without lowering the feed dogs. As you may guess I haven't done too much quilting so please forgive my ignorance. I love the idea of creating patterns on fabric and love the structure of the rulers!

Reduce the stitch length to -0- then I took a index card and cut it in half length wise, placed to over the feed dog area & secured it down with painters tape. run your machine for a few stitches with out thread to open a hole in the card. Having the stitch length to 0 the feed dogs don't move.
@dianneunderwood8456

@@kaymw34 thank you - I have discovered my feed dogs do not lower and while I do have a plastic cover for the feed dogs, it makes the sewing surface a bit too uneven to achieve good results . So I will use your suggestion using the card and tape, as it sounds like it will work much better.

great info. Can you recommend the right height for your sewing machine to be at for the most comfort while sewing
@QuiltAddictsAnonymous
@QuiltAddictsAnonymous 5 лет назад
That is going to vary by person. Ideally you want your elbows to be at a 90 degree angle when your upper arms are at your side. So usually it is best to have a cabinet your sewing machine can sit in.

I think it depends more on how precise you like to be. If you like the look of perfect lines and curves, then rulers will be your best friend. If you are ok with some imperfections while you develop muscle memory for free motion quilting designs, the stencils are for you.

@QuiltAddictsAnonymous
@QuiltAddictsAnonymous 3 года назад
Pfaff is usually a medium, but check with the place you bought it from. They will know for sure. If you measure the distance from the screw to the bottom of the foot you can determine shank. High shank is approximately 1 1/4 inches from the screw to the bottom of the foot. Low shank is approximately 3/4 inches from the screw to the bottom of the foot.

Stupid question. Why wouldn't you use your walking foot with the feed dogs up along with the straight ruler?
@QuiltAddictsAnonymous
@QuiltAddictsAnonymous 3 года назад
When you are quilting on your home sewing machine you want to work without having to turn the quilt. If you used a walking foot, you would constantly be turning the quilt under your machine and that would be very cumbersome and near impossible on a large quilt. A ruler foot and ruler let you go in any direction without turning the quilt, you just move it side to side or back and forth in whatever direction you want to stitch next.
