Jenny what i love most about you is that you make mistakes and just laugh and go on, that is the way most of us quilters should be,,,thanks for being such a great friend, I am 77 and love that you started your quilting life and invited all of us to join you,

I saw a historical quilt that was made by "church ladies" during the Depression using what they had. They had newspaper pages! You can still use that - just make sure that the paper is old. Older ink cures and doesn't come off on the fabric. The "church ladies" left the paper on the back so now it shows the news of the day. What a great way to use up all those strips. String quilts!!

My mother and grandmother made me a string quilt top using the scraps from the clothes I sewed for my kids, mixed with scraps from their sewing. It is very bright and random. They used cloth foundation squares to make it more secure, as grandma was in her 80's at the time. It has become this issue of overthinking for me, keeping me from actually quilting it up! I finally got started on the pillow shams. This has been in my sew room for at least ten years! 😳 with mixed color ways it really doesn't look good with any binding I have tried. Finally, thank you Jenny, I watched a video on self binding, and that is what I am going to do. These are a great way to memorialize scraps.

I finished 16 blocks today (40" x 40" baby or lap quilt) and took off the paper. When I went to piece them together, I realized that I couldn't NEST the seams unless I repressed every other block in the opposite direction. What a job but worth it.
@theresaskira8719

Theresa Skira Sashing is the answer! Jenny has sashing in the quilt behind her. I didn't think of it. This way, I don't have to repress half the blocks.

I made this quilt using one jelly roll plus the white strip going through the center. I was able to easily get 30 squares, which made a very nice lap quilt. The hard part was getting the white strip in the exact center of the paper. If you are off by even a little, then the other strips will not line up. Otherwise, it is a fun quilt to make.

#414justzoot - Just last month I made a string quilt in my brothers memory with a lot of varying colours but each scrap strip wasn't always the same width as the others, the quilt turned out lovely and I feel the strips don't have to line up.. I believe the secret is anything goes when using scraps.. Don't put pressure on yourself any quilt is unique and beautiful in itself.....

I put patterns etc in the “presentation books” with bound in plastic sleeves you get at office supply stores. They often have thin ‘newsprint’ sheets of paper in the sleeves. I have collected a pile of those papers, thinking that someday I would get into paper piecing. Cut down to 8.5” blocks, I’m ready to begin whittling away at my scrap pile 😀

Another great tutorial. I'm going to have to get some of those papers. I really like the added interest/pattern you achieved by keeping the middle strip consistent. And, since you mentioned sewing 2 together and then cutting into half-square triangles, it would be lots of fun to see what kinds of patterns can be created by again keeping the center strip consistent and doing the triangles and then playing with the patterns. And, of course, you wouldn't be limited to strips. Thanks!
