I think learning to set time for your hobbies without becoming too addicted to them is a very important skill in life. Like eating too much or too little of a good thing. It's all a balancing act of discipline. Once someone can master this skill, then there is less things holding them back from achieving their goals. However, if some activities are designed to create addiction, like casinos or video games, it may be better to just cut them out of your life and search for new hobbies.

I was heavily addicted and I recently sold my Xbox and PS5 and damn it’s been freeing. I got heavy into trophy hunting and it took up all of my time. Im married with a two year old and another child coming and they really suffered through it. But now I’ve become a better husband and a great father. Leveling up in real life is where it’s at :)

I was kinda addicted to video games, pc gaming and mmo's. I was like, I don't like where it's going, but I enjoy the game, I have to play, even if I loose track of my life, my responsibilities. My wife gave birth to a girl two years ago in January 2020. I was ok at first, but then I was shit, cause I wanted to have fun, play games, lacked empathy etc. I decided to quit games, couldn't do it, I was stuck. Finally I started to play less and less. Now I'm like 90% free, cause I mostly play Shmups with my arcade stick and some light games when I have time. No mmo's, no multiplayer. You still can play games, but you have to prioritize stuff. Now, my daughter loves her dad :)

The people defending video games in the comments don't realize that video games, especially the way they are nowadays, are designed to be like casinos. The only difference is, instead of wasting your money, you waste your time and health (and maybe your money). Video game companies hire professional psychologists in order to design new systems which make their games more addictive, they're designed to hook you, they want you to be hooked, so you'll give them more money, they don't care about your well-being, that's simply the modern social-economic system we live in. Most "gamers" play video games hours a day, and the reason for that is because they're trying to escape reality, it's a coping mechanism, precisely like a drug. It brings you no benefits at all, on the contrary, it can cause you psychological issues, issues with your life and relationships, physical issues like eyesight or body posture and so on. And even after you 'quit' a game, you didn't actually quit it, your mind is still thinking of that game, when you're in school or at work, you're just thinking of the next quest or level you're trying to get in that game you've been hooked on. Sure it's easy to say "self management" solves it, but are you willing to tell people who want to try out alcohol or drugs the same thing? After all, if you take alcohol or cocaine in "moderate" amounts, once in a while, it's not really going to harm you as much lol. And as mentioned before, it's designed to hook you, it's not like if someone gets addicted, it's because he's weak, the designers used the most up to date research on the human psyche to figure out how to get him addicted, it's innevitable. To be fair, in the past, video games weren't really designed that way, it was more about the "experience", kind of like watching a movie or reading a book, or at least, they were designed in a way where it wouldn't suck in tons of hours of your life, things changed since corporate greed started influencing the video game market.

I agree mothern games suck because they are pay to win live service games and that is just stupid. However, kids only spend money if their parents give the money to them! No money no addiction!. Simple.. Parents are the most responsable for this issue because they just dont care about what their kids are doing and dont even try to understand it.
@aq4356
@aq4356 2 года назад
@@nvc. I wouldnt even advise allowing kids to play modern games due to possible addiction, unless it's something like a simple nintendo game. The truth is electronic devices have killed a lot of our attention span and focus, and the new upcoming generation has been regarded as the "gold fish" generation due to how incredibly weak their focus is compared to previous generations, this is the generation that has been growing up with smartphones and other gadgets. But I agree with you, this all boils down to parenting. I'm very curious how the upcoming generation is going to be like in a few decades. The tiktok era has already showed bits of what may come about, and its not looking good at all.

@@Rrr-mw3kb Hello, I completely agree that games can educate you on certain topics, but these things are heavily overexagarated. Most people I have met, and I have met plenty, who play video games, are no smarter or more educated than the ones who don't play games, generally speaking, it depends on the individual, and most people do not play games that would educate you on a certain topic very much, which are the most popular ones (I'm speaking of topics such as history, chemistry, maths, biology and so on, things that matter). And most importantly, no matter how much a game can be "educating" on a certain topic (for example history), it's main purpose is to entertain you and keep you hooked, so it will sacrifice accuracy on a certain topic over that, generally, all these things can do is just light up some passion inside you for a certain subject. You hit the nail in the head with comparing it with social media, however you made the mistake of trying to downplay social media's negative effects of society by just saying you should blame the person instead of the activity. Social media, the way its designed, is bound cause issues it has caused, take TikTok for example, millions of people use it, and it brings no good to society at all, and it's purposely designed to make you addicted, ruin your attention span, and to just generally turn you into a degenerate by mimicking the nonsense activities the platform showcases. As I pointed out in my original comment, prevention is better than cure, the world would be a lot better off without things like TikTok, Instagram and so on, sure it did bring some good things like global communication, but the negatives, which studies have shown, greatly outweight the positives. Time will tell what will happen with the upcoming generations, as studies have already showcased that the most recent generation, the kids who have grown up with smartphones, tablets and so on, have the shortest attention spans out of all generations so far, which is quite concerning.

Dude... if you were spending money on videogames that had another purpose then the problem were not the videogames, it was you!.. If a kid is spending 5 hours a day in a basement or in a room playing, that is his parents fault, not videogames. This just shows how little parents care abouts their kids because its a general thing. Imagine this, All parents teach their kids about life, about consequences, about geting balance with their time and activities thus making kids understand things better and practice how to balance their lifes! They understand that there is time to study, to play in the street, to be with family and frinds and why not play some videogames and watch a movie or just listening to music. If its done with responsability then there is no problem at all!!.You take a way videogames and next you know kids are at the back of a cafe smoking cigarretes and listening to weird heavy rock with suicidal tendencies, you know, like they used to do before there were no videogames... The problem is mental health and comunity, not games or movies or whatever, its us and what kind of culture we pass to them.

If you are able to be successful without playing video games, I'm happy for you and you deserve all that you achieve. That being said, your reasons as to why you shouldn't play video games don't hold up that well. For one, what did you want to do instead of playing video games as a kid? Sure, playing 12 hours a day isn't good, but if you ask most people, they'll most likely tell you that they also played a lot. Also, not every video game is designed to be necessarily addictive. You mentioned live service and mobile games, which are notorious for being socially engineered to be addicting. There are heaps and heaps of fantastic singleplayer games that won't addict you. I'm glad it all worked out for you, but your reasoning isn't the best here.

My life as a serious gamer (2 hours a day average) from age 14 to 39: Highschool Football, weekend landscape jobs, lead guitarist in a band, college graduate, sys admin career, now director, home owner, happily married (yes she plays games too (Accountant), and proud father of twins. Also, we both have spartan trifectas. Some of my best friends in real life, I met playing Halo. Games are also a great time to spend with family members that live in other states and countries.

I think this would apply to any hobby. It becomes an addicition...you buy the gear related to the hobby, you make time for it, and you put alot of time in it. I think if you set some time boundaries on it though that it still can be fun and not have a negative impact on your life.
