When I first got my Rode Wireless GO II I had an awful buzzing sound when connected to an external recorder. The customer support team at #RØDE sprang into action to troubleshoot and help me come up with a solution to the problem. In this video I share the results with you and sho w you how to get the best results when pairing the RØDE Wireless GO II with an external Recorder like a ZOOM H6.

Glad you were able to solve your recorder problem. However for the large population of us who want to use these mics with our DSLR cameras, what you describe simply doesn't work. I truly am NOT trying to be a Troll, but I have tried the Rode Go II with every camera I have and I always get the buzzing. The reason is actually that the Rode units have internal antennas that Rode admits were designed to be "highly sensitive" to give longer range and prevent dropouts. These antennae pick up RF noise from anything including the other Rode units. When you use the XLR converter on your recorder you are creating a ground lift that removes the buzz - since the XLR is a mono channel with a V+, a V-, and a shield. On a DSLR with only a 3.5mm TRS connection, that doesn't apply. The solution Rode is pushing out to DSLR camera owners is to use a 6ft extension cable (preferably theirs for around $20) between the RX unit and the camera and then move both the TX and RX units "as far from the camera as is feasible". While that does work (I've confirmed it myself and not all cables will work) that is completely unacceptable for a product like this and makes it unusable for most of us. Again...I've experienced the buzzing on every single camera I own - DSLRs. camcorders, etc. My solution is unfortunately to ditch my Rode system and go somewhere else. Any company that would do something like this will never have my trust again. So far the new DJI system looks promising. It does everything the Rode GO II does including recording. As you mentioned - I will never need to be a football field away from my camera with a wireless mic so I don't care if I can hear my subject from a block away. I just need a system that works for normal interviews and such. And apparently the Rode GO II just AIN'T IT... Very nice and professional job on the video and thank you for solving the recorder side of the issue. I know that was helpful for lots of people and is greatly appreciated. Again, truly not trying to be a Troll. Just wanted to try and help the rest of the DSLR users out there like me. Peace.

Just got the Rode Wireless Go II and am experiencing this issue with a JK MIC-J 044 Lavalier Microphone with the pad *off*. I thought this may be due to the microphone itself, so was planning to order a Rode lav mic to see if perhaps it was a compatibility issue? You mentioned some of the mics did this, some did not. Using just the built-in mic on the transmitter sounds fine on both my camera (Canon 80D) and internal recording, but I get the buzzing on both the internal recording and camera whenever I plug in the lav mic. Have reached out to Rode support, and have also ordered a pack of ferrite core chokes. Another user recommended turning the pad on/off and that seems to have strangely helped. My issue is less pronounced with the pad *on* and also dependent on the physical distance between the transmitter / microphone and the receiver. There is less buzzing if they are further apart.

Short explanation: XLR connections are magic and solve problems. 3.5mm connections are garbage and are only ever used because they are small. Never do a long run with a cable that uses 3.5mm connections. Video cameras have XLR connections. DSLRs have 3.5mm connections.

Thanks for this new information. I have a H6 and prefer to record audio externally to benefit from the awesome H6 preamps. I’m honestly not keen on having to use an adapter in order to use these Rode mics with it on XLR: It’s cumbersome and just another additional point of potential audio failure. I also hear that these mics are 24bit, not 32bit. I’m really glad their customer service is so good though.

I just got a H6 and the Wireless Go II. Having the same issue with a lot of interference when recording to the Zoom H6. I bought the cheaper Røde VXLR with no power but I do have a lot of weird sounds. 1. Do I need the more expensive VXLR? 2. How do I record the left channel (lav 1) to channel 3 and right channel (lav 2) to channel 4? Do I need two VXLR as he uses in the video? 3. Had big problems today when using Wireless 2 and a Sennheiser G4 kit. The problem was “robotic” sounds something during the recording...

I personally haven't closely examined the quality of those recordings yet, but based on my initial listen they seem of sufficient quality to be used their own. Using them as a primary audio recording will require diligence on your part to make sure they are cleared before you begin. They overwrite old data as they fill up so its important you get everything you need off of them before starting another project. I always like backups when recoding audio so i'd always suggest attaching the receiver to your camera when using them. it's so small and easy to use I think its worth it.

Rode has promoted the Wireless Go II for use on cameras. I have up today not seen a single camera with XLR inputs. However, in my experience a longer cable and putting the Rx unit away from the recorder has solved it in a way. The XLR Pro has a built in transformer, so it is isolating the Rx unit from your recorder. If this is a problem with the Wireless Go II Rx units, why did they not solve it inside the Rx unit? (rethorical question).

Thank you for your follow up to your problems. I have both the Rode 1 and Rode 2 and they both have the same awful buzzing like you have experienced when I hook it into a Zoom h1n. In my cameras or using the Rode to record direct I never experience this problem. Sounds like its RF interference from the voice recorders. A shame there is only a 3.5mm on the Zoom h1n as its so portable as there are of course no XLR inputs with the basic recorders
@Panotaker
@Panotaker 2 года назад
I think it depends on your H6 and your Wireless Go 2. I have the same identical H6 and Wireless Go 2, and I had to move the Wireless Go 2 all around before I made it buzz, and it just barely buzzed. It only really buzzed in one certain position. I then tried the original red coiled cord from my original Wireless Go version One, and I couldn’t make it buzz at all. I have another shielded cable, and that one didn’t buzz either. So I think the problem is that non shielded flat red cable. A shielded cable works just fine. I have the older H6, not the newer black version, so maybe the older H6 is better shielded.

You might want to try the original Rode VXLR first. Systems like the Wireless Go don’t require plug-in power, and adapters like the VXLR+ and VXLR Pro will reduce the gain a bit. Just make sure the phantom power is turned off first if you’re going to try the VXLR, or it will pass 48 volts straight into your receiver.
@artjohnson01
@artjohnson01 3 года назад
@@Matthew_RaymondThanks Matthew. I did some research. Turns out that the RODE Wireless GO does not only NOT need plug-in power, it actually PROVIDES plug-in power if you plug-in a wired lavalier mic that needs it. DUH! I should have thought that through. P.S. It appears that the voltage provided by the VXLR+ is provided only if it is needed by the device. No risk of using this device in a mic such as a dynamic mic that doesn't need power.

@martinXY

A ground loop isolation transformer is only of use when connecting two pieces of AC connected equipment that are on different circuits together with - for example - an audio cable. Example a ceiling-mounted projector connected to AC on one side of the room. You take an audio out from the PJs 3.5mm out line and run it through to powered speakers at the front of the room. The powered speakers are connected to a different AC circuit. If the two circuits have different physical connections to ground, there now exists the possibility of a ground loop hum. All it takes is a bit of stray EM interference and bzzzzzz. Fixed by a $5 attachment. Not a problem in battery powered circuitry.
@RichardsWorld
@RichardsWorld 3 года назад
@@martinXY I think the small ground loop isolators I used aren't actually a true ground loop isolator. But it worked for me. The wireless mics I bought are probably sending out nasty RF signals. My small cameras and audio recorders don't like it. My Sony full frame cameras don't mind it so much. I wanted to use it with my Xoom H1N or H1 audio recorder and I can't put them anywhere near the wireless transmitters. I just ordered this Rode setup today. Thanks for identifying the issue with the GO! I think Rode should try to fix the compatibility issue with the buzzing rather than providing a hack solution. It defeats the purpose of portability having to bring additional accessories especially for travel. I was considering upgrading my Original Rode GO to the II as I want to reduce weight and space when trying to mic up more than one person with my portable audio recorder but the need for additional accessories if I decide to upgrade is a No GO for me. The problem is not with the wireless GO. The problem is lack of shielding on the Zoom H6 when using it's 3.5mm input. The problem only occurs when using older recording devices like the ZOOM H6. New devices like most modern cameras have better RF shielding that's why we I get the issues when connecting directly to my a7Siii

A for a Key light I use the Godox VL150, its a great light and pretty much a knockoff of the Aperture 120d for about half the price. The key to get a good looking video is to get your white balance right and exposure correct. @@TaskForceMediaGroup yes, the lens alone cost almost as much as my whole kit for the 70D. I have shot with Sony in the past as I had a Z1u back in the day. It was great, but once I shot with the Panasonic P2 card system (not my cameras, they belonged to the school), I couldn't go back to tape. The 70D is nice, but I was very limited. I even had to use a fan on it when I would live stream with it because even indoors, it got hot when using it as a webcam over USB. I have had temperature warnings when shooting outdoors with it. I just had my a7S III on as a webcam a few days ago for nearly 7 and a half hours, no fan, and no heat issues (indoors) as I decided to live stream my wireless go II battery test just to see what would happen. When I move into a new apartment in August, I'll have more space, and I was looking to maybe buy that light. Though the new Aperture 100d or 200d looks interesting. I use GVM panels currently. I'm looking forward to using S-cinetone myself, but I shoot in low light frequently too. Now to buy new cards as the v30 that were fine for the 70D, are limiting. As a wedding videographer I often tape a Rode Wireless Go 1 using the built in mic on to the DJs wireless or wired handheld mics for the ceremony and speeches. I often get a buzzing or feedback sound when the mic and transmiter are touching/too close. Are you able to test this scenario out to see if the shielding is better in the Rode 2 or what the problem may be?

Great video. I tried this set up, but got 0 sound on the Zoom H6, even with the gain dial set to 10. When I use a 3rd party 3.5mm to XLR cable off Amazon the sound transmits to the Zoom without any problems. I tried with and without phantom power. Am I missing something, or is it possible I got a dud VXLR Pro? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I’ve been trying to do the second part of your video issue: split the stereo signal from the receiver into two channels on my H6. I was looking for the Rode SC11 splitter when the kind folks at B&H suggested the Hosa tech pro stereo breakout cable 3.5 to XLR adaptor. It was $19 and came with the 3.5 mm cable split into two attached XLR cables. I’m sure there are other similar breakout cables out there.

I also own the a7S III and currently have the Rode Wireless Go 1. I've not been to eager to upgrade because with my current setup, I do get interference noise into my camera-s audio when the Rode System is on and near the camera. If you can test this and confirm it would be great. Obviously I am concerned when it's connected to my camera, but even if it's not connected and the camera is setup like this (for testing) I still get the annoying RF noise: - Have a 3.5 Jack to 3.5 Jack connected to the camera and nothing on the other end - Turn on the camera and connect headphones to monitor the sound - Turn on the Transmitter and Receiver (with nothing plugged into them) and just wave them around the camera and especially around the 3.5mm a7S III mic input port. -> I have tried different cables, different setups, RF magnets on cables and nothing helps, except placing the Receiver on a longer cable and keeping it away from my camera (not ideal). I wanted to ask, since you have both systems and also the a7S III. Is it an issue with the camera or with the Rode Go 1? Does the Go 2 solve this problem? Or should I send my camera to warranty? I don't know :( I made a video so you can hear it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fpMW8NSWPPk.html

Hi, basing on your video I purchased the same Rode VXLR Pro adapter, only one difference is Zoom H5 in my case. And, to be honest I don't see the difference. I mean that both, in case of plugin to jack socket directly or through this adapter, I still can hear this bussing, but only when the receiver is in some position, but close to the recorder, especially close to the socket. Whereas when you keep it in some distance, at least in my case, it looks like it is gone. I am just curious if in your case, with VXLR, you do not hear it at all, even when receiver is almost " touching" the recorder?

Yikes ... this is a deja vu moment for me. A few years ago I was looking for a way to feed my Rode micro... one of them as I own 4.... into my C300M2 camera in order to record better quality scratch or reference audio to later be restriped with sound from a house board. This was at a concert and I found the Canon camera's built in mic was very poor and tended to distort so that it made the restripe difficult. I ended up buying the Rode mini to XLR adapter ... not this VXLR plus but the VXLR. Unlike the usual Rode ruggedness I found the VXLR to have a very weak mechanical connection on the mini input. I couldn't have the small cable easily coming out during a shoot. SO I contacted Rode and they graciously replaced the VXLR with the VXLR plus. It was a huge difference. The connection is very firm and consistent with Rode quality. The reason you ask. The VXLR I had was a china made item and the VXLR plus is made in Australia. So way better quality but of course I think about the 3 times the price. So you have to give credit to Rode for making this right in my situation and seemingly in yours. I think they still sell the cheaper one but not sure where it is made. I was told there are actually additional components inside the plus version that make it a better choice when converting from mini which may or not be balanced and/or may require phantom power. I will be curious to see if the story about the 2.4GHz signal spilling into some electronics holds true on my other cameras. There have certainly been people who have plugged this into their camera and no noise so maybe the cameras are shielded better because clearly everyone will be using the mini jack for connection. So it is not surprising that this little gem has solved your problem. I have looked to buy some additional VXLR plus adapters but they are a bit hard to find in Canada and pretty damn expensive but I guess you get what you pay for. BTW I did manage to buy the new wireless Go 2 and they are a welcome upgrade to some other off brand products that lack the sophistication of this two mic package. The app is pretty impressive as is the onboard recorder which certainly can save your bacon if the signal is dropped.

I'm glad to hear you had a similar experience with RØDE customer service. Have you experienced the transmitters not recording any audio files to the internal storage, even thou you have internal recording turned on for both transmitter in the Rode Central app, and you see the red recording icon on the receiver, making it appear that both transmitters are in fact recording? I have mine set to always record to the internal storage, and the red recording icon is always lit on the receiver for both transmitters, but every now and then when I go to transfer the internally recorded audio files, one of the two transmitters didn´t record anything. There´s simply no audio file there.. Sometimes it´s transmitter 1, sometimes it´s transmitter 2.. I can´t reproduce the issue on command, and it´s completely random.. Have seen others mention the same issue, and I´ve contacted Rode support, but no answer yet.. So just thought I´d ask here if you have experienced this issue?

@@TaskForceMediaGroup Thanks for replying. Rode reached out and asked me to update to the latest firmware. For people that don’t want to spend $50 on two VXLR to 3.5 adapters you could probably install a toroidal choke on the factory cable and eliminate the RF feedback. The torroid would do what your fingers were doing when you grabbed the cable but be much more effective. The higher output from the new transmitter is basically using the cable as an antenna and feeding the digital signal into the recorder.

You don't need the expensive VXLR Pro. The normal VXLR or any 3.5mm to XLR adaptor will do just fine. The VXLR+ and Pro deliver mic power, needed for lavalier mics. They convert phantom power into a lower voltage mic power. For use with the Wireless Go receiver you do not need either of them.

i have the h6 and rode wireless go 2 i could only re create your noise if the go receiver was super close to the h6. moving it a couple of inches away would reduce it to pretty much nothing and a foot away it was gone completely so you might be able to solve this issue just with a longer 3.5mm cable. that would allow you to use your xlr inputs for other mics etc. it would seem your noise problem is much greater than mine so maybe the shielding on your h6 is worse than mine which may indicate the 3.5mm input on your h6 is a bit broken. I think you will find with your solution you will also be recording both go mics on 1 track on the h6 where as they are on seperate tracks on the 3.5mm input. you can get the rode sc11 splitter cable and a second xlr adapter if you wanted to record both mics on their own tracks with your solution. good video glad rode helped you to find a solution thats pretty cool.

One thing that I would say that you forgot to mention is that Rode Central App is not particularly user friendly. If you have to depend on internally recorded material for a period of time and you have 15, 20 or more files, exporting these files one at a time? that's annoying. What if you have 100 files?... I hope the next firmware update will allow batch-export two or all files at once. Another gripe is if you again have to depend on internally recorded file, It's a mono file with the sound coming out of one left or right channel. I had to use Adobe Audition to create mix-down to get the sound coming out of both channels. Rode Wireless Go II you have more work to do. I am happy that they treated you well. i just bought the rode wireless go 2 , it’s sounding great when i am using it with my camera .. but when i am connecting it with my iMac and trying to record directly ti Premier or other DAW’s like Garage Band .. it’s sounding weird and very bad and with lots if feedback and noise issues .. it’s almost unusable, do u know why this is happening 🤷‍♂️

I have no idea. I've had mine a couple of months now, but I'm still not as confident with them as my original wireless go. The original wireless go was rock solid in every way, the new one just seems finicky and prone to a variety of issues.

Thanks for the update. I had assumed from your previous video that it was the Go receiver that you had plugged in to your H6, so instead of plugging the receiver into the camera, you had it plugged in to the H6. That all made sense to me. But it transpires from this video you are plugging the transmitters in to the H6, not the receiver, and I can't think of any reason why you would want to do that. By the way, in the UK at least, there is a Rode VXLR Pro and a similar product called a Rode VXLR+. Does the fix work with both?

The Go 2 receiver is in fact plugged into the H6 on this video just like on my previous video. I went over the entire set up of what I have plugged into the H6 and why. You are correct there was also a transmitter that is from the original wireless Go plugged into the H6, but if you look closely and watched the video you'll have seen and heard that it was connected to the line out of the H6 and sending a signal the the receiver from my original wireless GO which was connected to my camera. I was also recording the audio onto my camera as a backup to the recording on the H6 and the recordings that are on the new wireless GO 2 transmitters. I explained all of this in the video.

@@TaskForceMediaGroup ahh ok, thanks for the clarification, sorry I misunderstood. Any thoughts on my final point regarding the VXLR Pro vs VXLR+ , maybe they are the same product with different names?

@@bernieraffe I’m no expert, but I believe it has to do with a balanced vs unbalanced signal. I believe the vxlrpro has a balanced signal. This guy seems to know what he’s talking about with regards to this subject. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AOmZ6H4aP7U.html

I’ve watched the video, thanks for the link. At about the 10:35 mark he says that you can safely use the standard (cheaper) Rode VXLR with the Rode Wireless Go, which makes me wonder whether the buzzing issue would also be cured by just using the Standard VXLR or indeed any old TRS to XLR adaptor.

@@bernieraffe Funny you ask that, before I spoke to the team at RODE I suspected an XLR adapter would be a possible solution. So I ordered the VXLR adapter(because I was being cheap and didn't know if it would work), well it just arrived this afternoon. I tested it out and while it significantly reduces the buzzing sound it does not completely eliminate it like the VXLR PRO does. I tried them both at the same time with the 2 transmitters of the wireless GO II, and the VXLR PRO had zero buzzing while it was still faint with the VXLR. I hope this helps.

Thank you for watching. I am so happy this fix worked. I was so disappointed when I first tested the new Wireless GO 2.
