This was a service call on a R-290 refrigerator that was not working, I found that the unit had a bad low pressure control that was not letting the unit turn on, I replaced the control and the drier and the unit is now working properly.

For those wondering, R-290 is pure propane. As mentioned it does not have an odorant like the stuff you'd usually use on your bbq because that would become a non-condensible and hinder the efficiency of the refrigerator or AC unit the gas was used in. Aaanyway. The reason it's safe to vent into the atmosphere is because unlike R-22, R410A and other HCFCs, R290 doesn't cause problems such as ozone layer depletion when it is vented into the atmosphere and is not potentially toxic to life... it just gets a little explosive if you keep it captive with a spark nearby... Also, have a funny thought.. If Hank Hill was a HVAC guy... I'm 100% certain he would refuse to work on any refrigeration systems that didn't use R290 as a refrigerant... He would also probably recover the charge so he can use it later on for his barbecue...

@@johninmilford7719 Butane isn't really that dangerous, with that low of a charge. Before you can have an explosion, you need proper carburetion. But we have natural gas or propane piped into our homes for heating and cooking, and we think nothing of it. A butane refrigerant leak is going to dissipate fairly quickly, anyway. I believe the EPA here in the US has raised the HC charge limit to 5.5 oz, or 150 grams, whichever is greater. But, for instance, 3 oz of 290 is roughly equivalent to 8.8 oz of R22. Propane and butane are excellent refrigerants.
@Cragified

The fear about R-290 is hilarious to me. People think it will just spontaneously explode. Yet these same people will smoke a cigarette standing in the fuel vapors refilling the gasoline in their vehicle. Unless oxygen and the hydrocarbon or another oxidizer are mixed right it's not going to burn. You will have to have done something REALLY wrong to get a conflaguration of R-290.

I was one of the guys that hung on till the end, not because I'm that kind of 'Fan Boy' but because the content was on point. The stressing of safety when working on R290 systems paired with the idea that "Your safety" is paramount, really got my attention and assured me I was listening to someone who not only demonstrated safety but expressed it toward fellow Tech folk. After all, despite what you may learn, you've got to make it home at the end of the day. Then there was the learning part that was good troubleshooting to start and then catching your power cord issue and the correction was good stuff. To conclude, it's always good time spent watching a 'Craftsman' walk the walk. Good job.

@gyrgrls
@gyrgrls 4 года назад
All joking aside, R290 has very similar curves to R22. The only problem with using R290 in an existing R22 system is the oil entrainment. Either special additives, such as R601 (pentane), should be used, or else a blend of R290 and R22. However, across the operating range of pressures and temperatures, the mass flow rate per ton is roughly between on third and one half that of R22, meaning lower vapor density at the same pressure, making 290 a slightly more efficient refrigerant. Here in California, R290 is widely used in window shakers, as R22 will be banned at the end of the year 2020.

i do oem on air recycling units for a scandinavian manufacturer and we had a machine that tripped the breaker every time they turned it on until it gave the fault code LP (low pressure), and when that happens it switches to using an immersion heater as these units are used for heating the house. Anyway we get there and the machine has 0 pressure and the compressor has a short so we disassemble the entire thing and find that the compressor wiring has rubbed against the hotgas (high pressure) line until it shorted against the copper and burned a hole through the line releasing the r290. remember these units are often placed in like laundry rooms and such, very centrally located in the houses. imagine tripping the breaker on and a flamethrower just starts flaming away in the middle of your house... sorry for bad english but i think yall get the point, r290 can be scary stuff

If you don't like brazing flammable refrigerants then consider Vulcan lokring fittings which are approved for this use and eliminates the risk of fires and having to get hot works permits. Here is a couple tips, When working with R290. You won’t be able to easily move a R290 Refrigerated Case. In a difficult case, You can use a small recovery tank made for flammable refrigerant. Put the small tank in a vacuum and release the refrigerant into the tank. Take the tank outside in safe location and cut the R290 loose. Repeat step if all refrigerant wasn’t removed. They did make recovery bags for refrigerators, That will also work for temporary containment to release R290 outside enclosed building. Good Video.

If by that you mean methane then technically yes you could use it as a refrigerant however that would be a little difficult considering the boiling point of methane is -162C. Though when you're dealing with liquid gasses that cold it doesn't really fall under refrigeration anymore and you enter the strange world of cryogenics.

Sorry, but this was over the top safety talk. 150 grams, how much is that at atmospheric pressure, 75 liters or so.... that might make lower explosive limit in 4000l of air......thats the corner of a small room. Just engineer the cooler box to not have ignition sources, odorize the darned gas and you are good to go. The average Bathroom deodorant and hairspray rack probably has more gas, contained in bottles made of film thin metal that falling on a sharp corner can puncture....I read up on this length when i got my new kitchen fridge and it was utterly amusing to see the refrigeration industry shit its pants over these tiny charges while people buy, keep and use gas based products in quantities vastly exceeding the contents of the fridge....at least 2 rooms in my apartment have more gas then my fridge and my workshop has what, ehh, 100 times ? More ? Mwahahaha. Nothing but propaganda to tarnish the reputation of unwelcome change......

I wondering what the logic of removing the service ports is, (including not having them built in from the manufacturer in the first place)? I can understand that the manufacturer could be confident of their pinches not weakening or cracking the copper with a calibrated factory tool. But if I was the manufacturer, I would much rather that field technicians have standard threaded ports for quick and easy service over expecting them to do that pinch with unknown training and unknown tools that could very easily crack that copper. Un-pinching that pinch to allow you to put the gauges on seem like exactly the sort of thing that would cause cracks. Even if they didn't leak now, they could be cracks half way through the wall which could be exposed by corrosion later on. (Maybe you are required to replace the line after you do that)? I am assuming a capped Schrader fitting wouldn't leak over time. (I'm speaking as someone without any expertise in the field, but big into repairing whatever I can).

The reason is there is only 5.3 ounces in a 290 system. This guy did it right, but a lot of techs will use gauges with hoses and scratch their head when half the charge is stuck in the hoses. R290 sealed systems under warranty are only opened as a last resort. Even with a failed compressor, you can use amperage to determine charge without opening the system. Just like anything with a critical balance, once it's opened, it's never quite to factory specs again.

Nice video, I have seen more and more equipment with R290 and 600 gas, the equipment is cheaper than any other gas, and components are made out of aluminum, the world is changing and its getting based on economics more than quality. Customers have no clue on what they are buying and with this compressors fail and repairs are expensive they find out very quickly what they pay for. Manufacturers never add valves and even if they add them lots of customers tend to repair the equipment themselves this is a time bomb.

My guess is, with how common it is for most schrader valves and similar to have o-rings go bad, it's likely much safer for the consumer to have less possibility of leaks by not including the ports from factory. And propane will murder o-rings of basically any type. I have a couple replica BB pistols that run on propane as a propellant and it works excellent for the purpose but I find myself having to replace seals every couple years even with them being designed for use with propane systems.

I'm pretty late to this but homeboy had no reason to put the service port on the way he did. We have piercing valves that you can seal after you're done. Leaving service ports on these units is not recommended because it is a leak over time and because r290 is flammable that would be way more dangerous in a kitchen also they have a very low charge on those dudes and may just leak the entire charge away like that.

Why not just hook a propane torch head to your hose on bullet valve and burn the propane off. That gets rid of all problems with propane that is heavier than air and can pool in low spots and drains and leave an explosive problem.
