OP's parents in the first story are absolute monsters. OP should cash out the money, get the most expensive possible funeral arranged for himself and then give any remaining money to other relatives or some charity. Disgusting behaviour. My heart is breaking for that poor guy.
@lorilancaster5917

It’s not his responsibility to finance his parents especially since they’ve done little to help him. I hope he uses the money to live the rest of the his days in comfort with a grand funeral! Leave the parents with pocket change. Heck! Even while living with them and unemployed he is still financially assisting them

Right. If the parents had been at least caring above the bare minimum, and instead of the money, they'be all about how to spend the rest of the time remaining with OP, their SON, then I could better understand him wanting to help them out. But the fact that they're already going on about what they spend the money on, jeeezzz... NTA OP, you do with your money, whatever you like! Live a little while you can.

I remember a previous story where a much older guy, who was on his way out, overheard his entire family talking about how they couldn't wait for him to die so they could get all his money from the inheritance. He had millions ready for inheritance. He wrote them all out of the will, ordered an expensive mausoleum for himself, and donated the rest to various charities. The wife and children got nothing.

A lawyer once said to my grandparents (because one of their kids threatened them to give him more money than he would have inherited by their testament): "While you two are still alive, no one but you decides how to spend your money. And if you decide to donate everything to your local dove-breeding club, than there's nothing your son can do to change that." I read the second story! I'll tell my story again here. I remember when I was little, we went to visit my great aunt for the first time. (My grandma had like eight sisters and two brothers. Large family) She served dinner to me and my cousins, and I just started digging in. I still remember the horrified look everyone gave me except my mom. My aunt looked furious until my mom explained that we didn't pray at our house. So my aunt asked me to stop eating, and explained to me what prayer was and why they do it. I felt awful, because it was the very first time I learned what religion was. She told me I didn't have to pray, but at least wait until prayer was finished so that everyone could start eating together. I still hate eating at other people's houses. It makes me nervous, but now I always ask if there's anything they do at dinner just to be respectful. It's usually a no, but I think it makes me more comfortable to ask anyway. Ops parents could have told her what their ways were instead of being so aggressive. Man I still think that's hilarious.

Story 1 is heartbreaking. I lost my sister 5 years ago, and while some of the money from her accounts and insurance policy and whatnot helped me with a down payment on my house (all approved by my parents, who also helped me out tremendously), I’d trade it all to have her back for one more day. One more week. One more month…you get the picture. No amount of money could make me want her gone. I treasured every moment I had with her, but it still won’t be enough for the memories that can’t be made because she’s gone. So yeah…those parents get an easy 5/5 or even 6/5 buttholes.

Update for story 2, pulled from a couple comments from OP: “My bf talks when we’re eating. “I know he has a weird relationship with his family. I was about to meet them this summer but he changed his mind and said it wasn’t a good time. He’s also told some weird stories about them but usually excuses it by that they’re conservative christian’s and that’s how they roll and that they’re still good people. But some people said this dinner thing has nothing to do with being christian or conservative so I’m guessing the other weird things has nothing to do with it either. It’s just so weird that they made me feel so loved and welcomed at first and then treated me like shit. “I haven’t talked a lot with my bf after this happened (friday) because I went home on saturday and he stayed. He did tell me he had no idea they were going to do that when I was there? He said not every dinner is like that. And I guess I’m kind of bad with social clues and my bf just expected me to understand. I don’t think he’s ever mentioned the quiet table though. “I also want to say that the [Swedish] expression I’m talking about can literally mean two things. It’s either shut up and eat or don’t speak with food in your mouth. But no one takes it literally and most people interpret it as don’t speak with food in your mouth.” “I've honeslty not heard "Låt maten tysta mun" since I was a CHILD. To calm down and have a calm dinner without speaking over each other etc. It's not the norm here to be dead quiet while eating...”

You wanna what they gave me? $15. $15 fucking dollars. I was pissed but I was so fucking done and took the money and left. The next I told my parents how much I got and my mom complained to her friend and my mom's BFF (who is also the friend's cousin) and her BFF made sure I got paid an extra $100 for the shit I dealt with- even though none of her kids were there as they were all grown. I told my mom not to volunteer me for shit without asking ever again- a request she still ignores to this day 🙄

Good on your parents for getting you at least a little bit more money, even though you should have at least gotten $15 an hour per kid.

Last story: if the roommates weren't aware the mom was coming over then yeah, OP would've been the AH. OP can't just assume the roommates were made aware she was coming over. She would need some sort of confirmation. Luckily in this story OP had just that and roommate 1 was informed and just forgot. From OP's POV, no one was home.

What about situations where the landlord is also living in the space? Like, if the daughter had been the owner of the condo? Still need to give notice? This situation isn't far off of that.

I feel so sad for the 1st guy! Imagine knowing you’re going to die young. And on top of that, having to make decisions about your final expenses. He will hopefully take out his life insurance money for himself. I bet his parents are only letting him stay at their house so they can get his money 😭 I hope and pray his remaining time on earth is beautiful.

First story breaks my heart, I'm listening to this while laying down with my son who is currently sick. I'm being his pillow so he can breathe better and he wants me here as a comfort. I hate that he's congested I can't even imagine anything worse happening to him because that's literally my worst nightmare. These people aren't parents, they're monsters.

The dad in the babysitting story knows how to deal with stuff like this. Cudos to him. If it was only op, she not only was going to be there till the early hours of the morning, but probably wasn't going to get paid for that. It's a situation where an adult view and action can help

For the last story where the mom dropped off supplies, in this specific case it most likely doesn't matter what the lease says (not a lawyer, but I have dealt with some shady landlords in the past and had to familiarize myself with various laws). OP had permission to enter from one of the legal residents which nullifies the 24 hour notice clause. Also, I think the word you were looking for is "Adulterer"

Secund story: my best friends home was like that, the first time he he was over when we were 5 he looked like a deer in headlights when we started talking about out days and such at the dinner table, the same went for me going to his place i learned how my friend learned to eat so quick, he just wanted to leave Evey meal because it was so awkward and weird

Story 1: Wow everything rSlash said, wtf is wrong with those parents? Story 2: 90% of stories like this could be avoided if people told their partner "Hey so my parents have this weird tradition/rule...." so they're prepared for it. He's clearly had dinner with other people so understands this isn't a common thing...

Story 4: I would still say, if OP hadn't notified her daughter that she would be coming over, that would still be a AH move bc imagine her daughter was doing something private and the mom just walked in like in this story. So it's good that she at least let her daughter know she was coming over, as should happen, as a parent and landlord. It's R1's fault for forgetting lmao

I still think that op is AH regardless of the circumstances inside the home because, even with notice, she didn't have immediate permission to walk into the home. That's why we have doorbells! She felt entitled to walk in without permission because she owned the place (which she went into a lot of detail about). The roommate definitely shouldn't have been doing anyone in a public space, but that doesn't mean it's okay to invade a private home like that.

The second story: As someone who comes from a conservative family, this is extremely odd. Honestly, if I sat there and no one talked during a dinner while meeting the parents of the man I love, I'd feel incredibly awkward. Like me being there was awkward for them or something or like I did something wrong. At least they weren't in a restaurant though. My family once took my grandfather out and he got up and insisted that we pray and bless the meal out loud in the restaurant. I told my friends that story once and they said that they've had meals with me and they never notice me praying. I tell them it's because I do it in my head, sometimes while I'm eating. Yeah, I forget, but I know I'm not going to Hell for it. The last story: Technically, OP did give 24 hour notice. OP's daughter knew that OP was coming over the day before. As mentioned in the update, OP's daughter did tell her roommates. It's not her or OP's fault roommate #1 forgot that it coincided with the day she was betraying roommate #2 by sleeping with her boyfriend.
