R&B's Most Used Chord Progression | 2-5-1 (Part 1)

Download this chord progression and 96 more here: sguy.co/chords (Available in MIDI, Apple Loop and PDF chord chart formats). The 2-5-1 is the synonymous with Jazz music but is also used heavily in R&B. In this new Trap R&B era we're hearing 2-5-1s constantly as this modern era takes influence from the 90s.

Major and Minor 7ths (inverted) will get you that classic, sexy RNB sound. 👍🏾 Add 9th’s / Rootless Voicings for Neo-Soul. I use 6-2-5-1 alot also. Today’s Trap style RnB uses more simpler movements... like a 1-4.

@audiodopebeats

@Gonzalo Guerra A "1-4" movement is essentially playing the 1st and 4th chords of the chosen scale. For example, in C Major, you'd do a C Major (1) to F Major (4). Knowing the number system, it makes it much easier to learn all 12 keys. This is how you can start playing and breaking down RnB, Gospel, etc. It has helped me tremendously in making RnB beats. Today's RnB style (with the exception of artists like H.E.R.) use more simpler chord changes, compared to what guys like Bryan Michael Cox, DeVante Swing, Rodney Jerkins, Teddy Riley, etc would do.

Maybe not to people who don't have much theory under their belt but none the less the diagrams themselves are easy to stay caught up with as you are playing. Very well done. Music theory that helps a beginner understand how chord progressions move. Love the way the basic chord progression actually starts on the IV and use a ii - V - I in a different key for a turn around or repeat of the chord progression. Great length for the tutorial too. Short, sweet and to the point. Guy, keep up the good work.

I thought the video was the perfect length. Your delivery was excellent, the instructions were clear. You avoided 'rabbit trails' or trying to impress us with what you know.
