Basically only literal babies get adopted from foster care. Sometimes toddlers, but that's far less common as behavioural issues from trauma (such as from being taken away from their parents, even if they were neglectful, abusive, or couldn't afford to provide basic needs) have already begun to manifest.

@@agentzapdos4960 Exactly the reason I am not a fan of the pro - life side of the whole A topic. It'd be one thing if foster homes and adoptions are common. But we live in a society at least in most 1st world countries. Where adoption is 1. mostly only for babies, 2. Often viewed as the "LAST" option to have a kid, 3. most foster homes for kids to be adopted aren't even properly equiped to handle the kids they already have. So its like what do you think happens when the supply of adoptable kids inflates beyond the demand? Its like a no duh moment where there will just be a MASSIVE influx of kids who outgrow their foster homes and we just continue to create a imploding societal cycle.

I would love to be a foster parent to older kids and teenagers one day. I know they need a safe loving home and a lot of help. No, at least a girl who wants a sugar daddy goes just for the money. Not only does she want the guy's money, she also wants him to "contribute his fair share of the housework", which he probably already does by doing the yard work. So, essentially, she's also probably doing less chores than if she was alone, i.e. she also expects him to be a part-time "housemaid" beside a sugar daddy.

My mum worked for CPS in the past, and you are correct: people want young kids. The younger, the better, for two reasons. One, it's easier to form parent/child relationships and avoid trauma (though even infants can have trauma, it's just percieved as less likely). Two, parental rights are terminated faster for babies to stabalize their future and avoid furthur trauma.

This! It can be very difficult to get a termination of parental rights approved by the courts, especially if at any point in time, the parent appears to be making a genuine effort. Also, kids over the age of 14 have to consent to their adoption. I have seen several cases where a 14-15 year old will have an adoptive resource but choose to pursue other options.

I feel like the last story is just how dinner should work. Especially for kids in that age range, but even younger kids honestly. Have the option of eating what was cooked by the parent or have the tools and ingredients to make something for yourself if you don't want that. Sounds like a really good way to make sure that a good relationship is built with food as well as encourage learning how to cook and reasonable independence from a young age.
@mesozoicera87
@mesozoicera87 Год назад
That's 100% how we do it with a 14 year old. I make whatever the adults want (usually it's my choice unless there's requests).. and there's always ramen, sandwich materials, cereal, TV dinners, and box meals of various sorts if that's not what they want. The rule is, you either make it well before I start cooking, or you have to wait until I'm done, because prepping meals for everyone in our small kitchen takes priority over one person's food preferences. More often than not, they'll figure out how to obtain optimum calories from a mixture of what I make.

As someone with very different diatariy needs than the rest of my family I'd say this is an ideal solution. And you learn basic life skills doing so.

There was a family who owned a ranch in Utah. They would take in a constant stream of foster kids and made sure they were fed and clothed and loved. The father would take them all out on the ranch and teach them life lessons and let them take their frustrations and angers from the world out on manual labor. The mother taught them all how to cook and maintain a home while doing some amazing gardening. They took the money the state gave them and put it into separate accounts to give to the kids who aged out. The only policy they had was “no adoption” it was weird but they took in several dozen kids over the years and most of them stayed multiple years and it became an unofficial group home/family. Last time I saw the couple was 2017 and almost all the foster kids come back for thanksgiving and Christmas every year and most of them are very successful. They had to stop fostering after close to 30 years because they wanted to retire and hang out with the grandkids. (They had 9 of their own kids too) honestly don’t know how they made it all work

Well, I can only speak about Florida as that's where I practice. However, the adoption subsidy is partially from federal Title IV-E funds, so I would hope most states are involved in that. We have turned into one of the most backwards states in the country, but that is one good thing we do. Also. the adoption from foster care is done at no cost to the parents. I am only posting this for the benefit of OP, so he does not have to feel like he is asking his caregivers to make a choice. I do not think a young man in foster care is going to know about these financial things - most of the adoptive parents I talk to don't know them. He should only have to be worried about school, friends, first love, first kiss, getting his driver permit, SATs, and beating his dad at basketball or video games.

I will say the husband's insistence of having the kids homeschooled was a bit unreasonable as my mom had her own daytime hobbies, some of it involving our school activities. I get asking for some help around the house, but it sounds like between the 70 hour job and fixing stuff (a BOAT!) he's already doing quite a lot and it sounds like the wife is in it for OP's money. My sister used to be in a similar situation like the dad in the last story - cooking four different meals every single day (her two boys were picky eaters, her husband has medical issues and she didn't want anything "too complicated" for herself; probably because she was too tired to choose for herself in the end). While the older son decided from day to day anew if he was going to be vegetarian - meat eating - vegan - meat eating again, the younger one was a bit more... let's say on the difficult side of getting to eat things of nutritional value as a kid. He ultimately decided on *wieners with Nutella* and would refuse to eat anything else to the point of near starvation, regardless of what was tried and offered. It lasted almost a year long, until he decided, spaghetti was fine... with Nutella. Finally she could bring him to eat bland potatoes with wieners and ketchup, but it was quite a fight with a very stubborn kid (probably his Dad - not the husband mentioned above - allowed him to eat all the junk he wanted when he was visiting, it only got better many years later).

S1: If a foster kid is any older than a literal infant (i.e. less than 1 year old), the chances for adoption are already near-zero. Most people don't have enough love in their hearts to adopt broken, traumatized children, and the effects of severe trauma can manifest as early as 18 months. To a child, being taken away from their parents, even if the parents are abusive or neglectful, is severely traumatizing.
@AWholeBeew
@AWholeBeew Год назад
Foster parent here. I'm not sure what the stipulations are elsewhere, but in NY State, foster kids are considered "hard to place" cases when the kid has special needs or is 3+ years old. Apparently, anything beyond a toddler is not desirable for most foster or potential adoptive parents, which is immensely sad (my foster daughter is 5 and is in the process of being diagnosed with ADHD, so she would have had a tough time finding placement, too). Obviously, the money doesn't matter to good people, but to clear it up for OP, depending on where he is, his foster parents will continue to receive stipends for his care from DSS until he's an adult because again, he's a hard-to-place case. They also probably make a higher stipend for the same reason. But buddy, even the $900-something that we get per month for a hard-to-place kid isn't enough to be the reason why a good person would keep her or you. They love you. Believe it.

One thing I've promised myself one day is to foster. I don't care for the money. I care about a child having a safe, nurturing, loving and supporting environment to help them become the best version of themselves. I'd do whatever I needed to to help them - set them up with therapists, set up activities to help build their confidence, spend as much time as needed for them to feel comfortable with me, make things together to help them express themselves to me... There's so many kids that need that kind of love, care and support. And yet, foster families care more about the cash they get. Not the child. I remember seeing a foster child being constantly excluded from playing by his foster parents for playing "too rough" at my old church. It was just typical roughhousing. He'd get growled at by his foster family for any minor transgression they saw. During one of those exclusions, I sat with him and invented a game on the spot (made out of the observe, describe, participate DBT skill). He'd tell me a vivid description of what he saw and I'd guess it. He loved the game so much that he wouldn't go back to playing with the kids.

She loves the free time with our two dogs and only spends maybe a full day combined cleaning every week.

I have a friend who grew up in foster care from when he was a baby to when he aged out. The thing he told me that always breaks my heart to think about is “generally if you’re not adopted by the time you’re 7 you start having to make your peace with the fact it’s almost guaranteed you won’t be.”

When I was growing up, cereal was an option if we didn’t like dinner. My mom said she wasn’t a short order cook. I rarely ate cereal for dinner!

That last story reminded me of a commercial I once saw, where a child was having a tantrum in a store because he wasn't allowed that bag of chips and then his mother copied him (Vic's First Defence). Awesome story!

As somebody who was adopted from foster care at the age of 7, my parents continued to be given money from the government every month until I turned 18.

I have an established rule at my house for my kids. You have to try one bite of what I made for dinner. If you don’t like it, you’re free to make yourself a sandwich. I found that when they know they are free to not like something without me getting upset or making them eat it, they’re much more willing to try things they otherwise wouldn’t. Plus it takes away the pride factor of them not wanting to admit they were wrong about not liking something after they spent 10 minutes insisting they hated it before they even took a bite lol Now they know if they really don’t think they’ll like something it’s easier to just take a quick bite and then get to making a pb&j. There’s no point in making a big deal about it. Funnily enough, they all eat way more of the food I cook now than before i implemented the rule. I think picky eating can SOMETIMES be more about agency than the actual food itself.

My number one rule when dating someone is that my presence in their life should make their life better and vice versa. There are moments when you can't make their life better like if you get sick but for the most part my rule stands. Edit: the bookkeeper story is a good example of when you aren't doing anything wrong but it becomes wrong when someone asks you to stop. There was a girl I would talk to you for like an hour or more after work all the time and there's nothing wrong with that I mean if you have a crush on someone imagine getting to talk to them for an hour that would be awesome right well she didn't actually like it so eventually I had to convince her to tell me she didn't like it and then I backed off. If you're dating someone you should always try to make their life better and even if you're not doing anything wrong if they want you to do something different you should try to do it if at all possible. Heck this goes for any human interaction not just dating.
