I worked as a Firefighter. House fire one cold January morning, fire is out, we're in overall mode, cleaning up so nothing flares up later. We are tired, cold and filthy. It's like 3:00 AM and 20 degrees F. When this little old lady from across the street comes over in her house coat carrying a try with a coffee pot and cups. Her fine china coffee pot, cups and saucers. We stood around grubby, sweaty, and drank coffee from fine china. That little old lady served the finest coffee I've every had and is my hero.

"WTF are you trying to make me feel guilty for not paying you?!" Yes.

Am I the only one whose heart was warmed by hearing that last story about the guy who sends the firefighters free pizza?

What if the guy punched the wall...because he's mad that his freeloader of a sister ruined ANOTHER date?

That guy had to have punched that wall out of frustration caused by his sister. That has to be the logical explanation right? I hope that poor guy hasn't had too many dates ruined just because his sister is one of the worst kinds of people there is.

We had a lady who would bring us home made bread, rolls, muffins, birthday cakes, etc.. We considered her the hero of the firehouse. Her late husband had been a firefighter and she considered us her "boys." A truly nice lady.

The story about the phone for 160, the CB was probably half an hour on their way when they said: I can be there in 15 minutes. (guessing 10 minutes had passed when they mentioned 5 minutes) so it is possible the 45 minute journey is legit

I think the guy from the first one punched the wall because his sister ruined his chances, he sounds like a solid dude who just wanted a date but I guess his sister wanted to tag along and ruined it

When I worked at KFC if we had a buck ton of chicken left at the end of a shift we would give it to the cops as a thank you for their hard work.

Dear r/Slash, My wife and I really enjoy your readings. I myself deal with entitled wastes of flesh daily, so it's a constant for me to agree with the justice being served to the ones deserved mentioned in the reddit posts, but it was really nice to hear about the fan of the firefighters in the end of this reading today. It's nice, it is really uplifting to rediscover the kindness people can actually have, and to re-realize that faith in humanity can still be valued. Keep sharing those, it's a pleasant upbeat from the negative.

Two examples of absolute legends at the end there, both the fire fighters and the pizza guy

When I was a teen in the 1970s I worked at a McDonald's, often until closing. We'd be there until 2AM, cleaning and so on. During this time we'd go out the back door with bags of trash for the dumpster. Almost EVERY night some guy with his girlfriend would come cruising around the parking lot looking for free food - anything for free. We weren't allowed to do that (though the manager allowed US to get free leftover food) because it wasn't safe to give out food that had been sitting. But even at that age, I always wondered WHAT KIND OF GUY WOULD TRY TO GET GARBAGE FOOD FOR HIS "BEST GIRL"? Good grief - that's NOT the way to impress a nice girl!

The story about the racist family is literally what my family goes through. My dad's side of the family literally ostracized us because my mom is black and from the Caribbean. I've only ever met them twice, and my "grandmother" was staring daggers the whole time.

That last story (comment) about the pizza guy, harm my hearth. It’s so refreshing to hear the opposite stories where people aren’t always entitled and just wants to help. And it’s really amazing to read comments down here about similar experiences. I think it should be common trait of humanity to just bring cup of coffee/ tea/ something to working firefighters or even to some worker repairing sidewalk. It wasn’t long since in our street group of workers were repairing piping. It was always lot of noise but it could be seen it was hard, honest and needed job. So on third (I think) day, my mom asked them if they wanted something to drink. Since then for all month when they worked in our street, when they had, they always came to us for some coffee and water. Honestly I enjoyed preparing it for them. I could see that this little gesture lightened their mood. And in the end when their work was done and we asked for help with our part of fixing our parking space, what was next to sidewalk, they gave us discount and repaired it (I don’t know details of that problem, lol).

Oh hell yeah, that pizza guy for the firefighters is awesome. I used to volunteer with the NSW State Emergency Services (SES) in Australia. Some units specialised in flood rescue, alpine rescue, vertical rescue (up cliffs etc) or used the jaws of life to free people from their cars. We are the service in charge for floods and storms, so most of the regular work involved preparing for flooding by sandbagging and/or warning people of a flood, removing trees after a storm, doing temporary roof repairs, and helping out police or fire during search and rescue or natural disaster evacuations. When a decent storm/flood event happened, we would have hundreds of incidents to attend to and could spend 8+ hours out there doing jobs. Some people were nice and gave us bottles of water on hot days, and when we ordered food (I think we had a meal allowance of around $10 each for lunch on the long days), the takeaway places would usually give us more food than we ordered for the same price. It helped us to feel happy and motivated when we were volunteering our time and services, especially when you'd get the odd person who didn't understand the term "temporary repairs". You get roof damage because of winds/trees/water, we generally use a tarp and sandbags to make sure you stay dry until the insurance people can do their assessment/you can book in some terribly busy repair person to fix it properly. Not for you to leave it that way for months or years and then call us back to put a new tarp and sandbags over where the old sandbags and tarp have disintegrated, just because our services are free.

Racism can be cured. It takes a long time and a lot of patience, and it requires the racist person wanting to change. But I have seen it happen, it is uncommon but it happens.

It's one thing to say, "I can't eat mushrooms, because I'm allergic, and it could kill me, even if I pick them off." But to say, "Ew, I don't like them," is a whole different thing, and unacceptable, when you're begging. That horrible sister-in-law with the tutoring - UGH! I don't even have words for how horrible she is, and sadly, she's raising her daughter to be just as bad.
