Honestly that wrong floor lady is my fave and one of the actual sane ones. She genuinely believed her apartment was given to someone else, and when she was told "yo this is floor 3" she IMMEDIATELY apologized, like she knew she fucked up and owned it
@DavidStruveDesigns
@DavidStruveDesigns 2 года назад
Yeah for me it seems like the culprit is actually terrible building design / lack of proper or adequate signage. The landing area of each floor likely don't have a big "Floor 3" painted on the wall and by the sounds of it the individual apartments or rooms don't have individual unique numbers on the doors either. She said "I'm in 4R" so it sounds like maybe there's two apartments per floor, one labelled "R" the other perhaps "L". Which in itself isn't bad if the doors include the floor number first but is still kinda silly. And she probably didn't see that for the same reason how she even got in - the door was already open? Just guessing here.

@@DavidStruveDesigns the apartment complex I used to live in is guilty of this kinda. It had several connected buildings and each had 4 units: A, B, C, and D. There was an incident where one of my neighbors at the time thought she was being robbed when another resident (shitfaced drunk) walked into the wrong building. As she was on the phone with police screaming "I'm in 23B!!" the guy was so drunk he tried to argue with her "no! This is 25B!". Dude was arrested for public intoxication and breaking and entering which I think is a bit unfair since he never actually "broke in". My neighbor would constantly forget to lock her doors, so he just walked in thinking it was his apartment. She always remembered to lock up after it happened though.
@DavidStruveDesigns
@DavidStruveDesigns 2 года назад
@@welcome2myhappyworld OOF! Yeah kinda feel sorry for that guy, not just because she didn't lock her door which resulted in the breaking and entering charge (it's the entering bit he was technically guilty of), but "public intoxication" ... inside a PRIVATE apartment building seems WAY harsh to me. Really that charge should only apply if he were outside the complex on the actual street. Poor bloke! Like I get why she was so scared but sheesh a simple conversation could have cleared it all up without needing police presence, plus he was already basically home - cops could have just guided him to the right apartment and let him sleep it off instead of arresting him.

@@welcome2myhappyworld the apts i used to live in had a number of multiplexes. The insides all look the same as well as all the doors. It was normal for my neighbors when drunk or high, or for their guests that aren't familiar, to try to open the wrong door. I always kept it locked, it's the PJs so of course I did, but because of that it was still unnerving at times to be sitting in the living room late at night and for someone to start messing with your door handle. Especially when you would hear them messing with EVERYONE's handle in the hall. (That hall had all hardwood floors so the cameras they put in could pick up sounds in the hall as well as conversations in parts of the apts. Again PJs, so drug activity is common there.)

You know, reading your comment made me realize how people get sucked into these conspiracy theories. You have a legit reason to have this need to seek out a group where you feel less marginalized. But what if these people are also feeling marginalised for less legit reasons. That they're racist, that they have whack ideas, that they want to own 300 AK-47s in their garage and make an AK-47 jungle gym with them. Then they go online, and that feeling of loneliness and isolation that may have persuaded them out of the stupid goes away when they find the equally stupid and deluded. So the same mechanism that helps hurt and marginalised groups find comfort and help helps whacks also find comfort and help and ... I just made myself sad.

The fact they associate the word "pronoun" strictly with transgender is a poor indictment on the American education system. Also the phenomenon of relating the shape of mountains to stumps is called apophenia. We're so good at recognising patterns that we can do it when there isn't a pattern. It's related to pareidolia, seeing faces in objects. This clearly had some survival benefits in low light being able to see predators more easily and the vestiges of this survival instinct lead people to question things that are completely mundane.

I have no love of the US educational system. I was a math/science teacher and got to see its dysfunction from the inside. But, I wouldn't put this solely on the educational system. Lots of this is social and political, coming from people who went through school when this wasn't an issue.

It's not related to pareidolia. It IS pareidolia because the phenomenon is not just about seeing faces in random patterns. It's seeing patterns, objects, or any meanings in nebulous stimuli. in In this example, people see the visual pattern of a tree stump and connect it to the same visual pattern of certain mountain formations. Also, it also doesn't have to be visual. It can be auditory as well. Unintentional messages in music played backwards is a good example.

@@gabrielhenson5751 Only some elves are old enough to remember that day. Thousands of aberrations marched through a portal in the sky. We thought that would be the end, but the giants refused to give in. They cut down 3 world trees , and used them to make mighty weapons. Losses were great, but eventually the giants were victorious. The Incursive Army was pushed back. We celebrated, not realizing realizing the problem was solved with a new problem. When those World Trees were cut down, they took pieces of the world with them. We accepted this as a necessary loss, but vowed to not use World Trees again. You know how humans are, they live such short lives. Half of our lifetime to them is dozens of generations. They forgot what we learned, and assumed the warnings were exaggerated. Wanting the power the giants wielded, they have cut down another world tree. That's why the Great Forest of the Stars has simply shriveled up over night.

One of the few, big, eye-opening moments I had in school was the lesson where I realized that all the air in the atmosphere is always pushing down on anything below it. It's much the same for anything underwater for water pressure. Those clouds are pushing on the air below them which collectively push down on all the air particles below them until you get to the air particles that push down on you, the person standing on the ground. I forget the actual distance from surface to where the atmosphere ends, but you've got literally miles and miles (or km if you prefer) of air stacked up on top of you pushing down. The clouds ARE always sitting on top of you, along with all the air in between and there is a measurable force you're having to exert back to avoid being smashed into the ground. Something everyone, religious or not, should be able to appreciate is how amazing it is that all living beings on earth have bodies built to handle that much pressure at all times. It makes a lot more sense when you see the differences adding the pressure of being deep underwater or removing all that pressure while in space.
@noefillon1749
@noefillon1749 Год назад
Well actually the air is a fluid. So the pressure is not specifically applied top down. If you put any surface into contact with the air, the pressure (which is, you're right, due to its weight above it) the air will push perpendicularly to the surface to its inside. So if you put your hand somewhere horizontally, the air above it will push it down and the air under it will push it under it. Another this is that the air pressure, despite significant, is not amazingly strong. It is about 1 kg per sq cm or 6 lbs per sq inch.

Welll, kind of. The way it is measured is still weighted towards certain expectations and models we typically use in our society and there's more than one typically used test that is at least somewhat indicative of practice (which is why you can't take another one within 6 months or so, it'd be falsified by your prior experience) and it's not entirely unlikely that some hobbies might train you in skills that come in handy during different tests without necessarily increasing your problem solving ability in other regions by the same measure. (One example may be any "Use X moves to achieve a goal" game, things involving pattern recognition, experience in art, memory games*...) It does measure how well you do at specific tasks that are tested which to some extent correlates with other problem solving skills given the same cultural background and can be helpful in things like figuring out if a certain person may have cognitive problems that need to be addressed/considered, but it's far from being useful universally. *Short and long term memory are a part of many IQ assessments.

I think i heard this the second time on this channel, and want to clear it up: In everyday use, the word "theory" often means an untested hunch, or a guess without supporting evidence. But for scientists, a theory has nearly the opposite meaning. A theory is a well-substantiated explanation of an aspect of the natural world that can incorporate laws, hypotheses and facts. The theory of gravitation, for instance, explains why apples fall from trees and astronauts float in space. Similarly, the theory of evolution explains why so many plants and animals-some very similar and some very different-exist on Earth now and in the past, as revealed by the fossil record. Facts and theories are two different things. In the scientific method, there is a clear distinction between facts, which can be observed and/or measured, and theories, which are scientists' explanations and interpretations of the facts I leave this here because it confused me at the first time too. TLDR: In scientific terms "Theory" means pretty much the explanation of the facts, not as synonim for "hypotheses" or guesses, as we use the word "theory" in everyday life.

I loved the bit about "mountains used to be trees." There's actually a term for this, "pareidolia," which describes the human mind's tendency to perceive patterns in nebulous things. It's like seeing faces, castles or sailboats in clouds, or seeing the shape of a human face in stucco, cracks in the sidewalk or in decorative multicoloured pebbles in a garden. Even where no such pattern actually exists, the human mind will still perceive such a pattern. The human mind is especially good at seeing other human faces, even just in silhouette, which is why camouflage face paint was invented. By systematically darkening the highlighted areas (forehead, cheekbones, nose etc) and lightening the shaded areas (eye sockets, under the nose, jaw etc), you can disrupt the silhouette of the human face so completely that your opponents won't register that fact that there's a human face there.😉

Making a habit of drinking only distilled water may have a noticeable impact on your body, one glass will not (I have drank it myself, I know it wouldn’t be health-threatening).

drinking destilled water will do even worse than just make you dehydrated- it having less mineral content than the water in your cells will cause your cells to burst as the minerals get sucked out of them to achieve balance of mineral levels on both sides. In small amounts, it will kind of feel like you drank something too hot and burnt your tongue (since the tissue is damaged)- in large amounts, it will kill you long before actual dehydration gets you

There's this thing known as, "chemical potential." Being mixed together is sometimes a lower energy state than being separated. Some substances want to move from, "we're all concentrated over here," to, "there's a low concentration of us over there, because that, too, is a lower energy state. And Nature is lazy, so systems always try to move from higher energy to lower. (Unless something stops them.) This is how and why our lungs work, and how and why digestion works. The concentration of CO2 is higher in the blood in our lungs than it is in the air in our lungs. So, the CO2 wants to move to where the concentration is lower - that's chemical potential at work! Conversely, the concentration of Oxygen in our lungs is higher in the air and lower in the blood, so chemical potential "pushes" the oxygen from the air across the walls of lungs into the bloodstream. The same thing happens with nutrients in our digestive system. Sugars, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, electrolytes… they're all at waaaaay higher concentrations in our digestive tract (usually) than in our bloodstream, so chemical potential kicks in and moves them all across the intestinal lining into the bloodstream. Distilled water, being nothing but H2O, drops the concentration of the stuff in your gut more than tap water. But not by much if you only have one glass. In fact neither does. If, however, you drink a large enough quantity of water … and it doesn't matter if it's distilled or not … it can drop the concentration of nutrients in your intestines so low that it's _less_ than the concentration of those same nutrients in your blood. And that will send the chemical potential in the _opposite direction._ Uh Oh! Nutrients will move out of the bloodstream into the gut. Again, this takes a hell of a lot of water and it really doesn't matter whether it's distilled or not.
@awfuldynne
@awfuldynne 2 года назад
Someone was saying distilled water was dangerous. I asked them for details: What essential minerals does tap water have and in what quantities? How much distilled water does it take to deplete the body's minerals? They never got back to me with that information. Or if they did, RU-vid never gave me the notification. Looking up some things on my own, it sounds like so long as you're getting the minerals you need in your diet and you're not a high-performance athlete who needs an electrolyte drink to prevent muscle cramps, the main health risk with distilled water is weaker dental enamel (and thus, more cavities) compared to if you were drinking fluoridated tap water. The other site I looked at described distilled water as one of the purest forms of drinking water; I don't think that'd be a valid description if it actually resulted in dehydration.

The mountains being trees is a *bedtime story!* my grandma told me a story about how humans used to be giants, how mountains were trees that reached to the sky, how bamboo were blades of grass to them. The giants were too tall to see and appreciate the smaller things in life, and they were too high up to know what’s going on below them. One day the giants were stripped of the height that gave them the advantage over other species, and told to compromise their way into more fulfilling things. And because they were now ground level and eye to eye with the creatures they hadn’t noticed before, the giants that once spared not a glance to what’s going on below them have learned that life is a series of compromise and communication. They were no longer at the top, but they didn’t miss it. Because the relationship they build with the earth and animals by simply being grounded was way worth the sacrifice they were pushed to make! I understood parts of this story at 6 but I took it to heart. I thought it was a real story, haha! Now I know it’s just a moral. That it’s easier at the top but more fulfilling down to earth. I hope someone loves this story as much as I do!

@@battlesheep2552 the best governmemt for the people is a benevolent dictatorship, cause they have the right incentive structure to plan for long term prosparity. The problem, is that we never in the thousands of years we tried it, found a good system of transfer of control to maintain high quality leaders one generation to the next. The main benefit of elected representatives is that it should, in theory, eliminate the succession crises that plagued our many empires

Yeah, it’s super scary that they wanted her to be a representative of their state. Like… so you WANT everyone to assume you’re like her and laugh at you uncontrollably?

7:17 I always get this frantic, panicky, I'm-about-to-cry feeling when I have to do even "9th grade math", as Click put it. Took Algebra again in community college so I could make sure I knew and understood the fundamentals, and I *DO,* it's just...incredibly laborious and cumbersome for me. The equations Click did with such ease would have taken me at least 30 minutes to work out, if I even figured out how to put it into equation format correctly to begin with. Anyone else feel like they're facing a hydra when it comes to basic algebra?
