Got this off of Google.....The phrase "losing my religion" is an expression from the southern region of the United States that means "losing one's temper or civility" or "feeling frustrated and desperate." Stipe told The New York Times the song was about romantic expression.

I understand, George. This song - this time - took me back to when my husband left to go be with his girlfriend. I honestly was an ordained minister who was very active in the church, and I just quit! I quit praying, I quit talking to God. That was 22 years ago. I was so mad at God for allowing that to happen after 15 1/2 years. Then I got married again, and we got back in church, and then my husband was shot (he was a bodyguard), doctors didn't repair it correctly, replaced his knee with a metal one, and it ground down, putting small bits of metal into his brain, and he started having hallucinations, and I found that he had hung himself in the garage! So I quit going to church again. Then I ran into someone who I'd known back when I was 24, and his band was having a 25th anniversary concert. My kids were grown, I had no responsibilities other than to myself. So I got a two week ticket to fly out and see his band. When it came time to leave, he said he'd lost me once before and he wasn't going to lose me again. The year we were married he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. He died April 10, 2019. Guess who hasn't been to church since! Yeah, and I actually was one in the spotlight, as I was lead singer in a Christian Rock band - and a soloist in the church! So now, that's me in the corner, I once was in the spotlight, but I keep losing my religion! Haven't listened to the song in years - now I know why!

The passion and emotion in Michael Stipe's vocals cannot be discounted when talking about the emotion this song conveys. REMs lyrics can be ambiguous, but the energy and passion of Michael Stipes vocals and body language (if you ever see them live), speaks volumes. If you thought this song was sad you might want to stay away from "Everybody Hurts" by them. Or at least bring some tissues LOL. If you really want to hear a great breakup song by them check out "Country Feedback". Intense.
@kimacronym2521
@kimacronym2521 2 года назад
I fully agree ! This is an iconic song, maybe one that defined the decade it came out. His vocals are somehow cutting through the room, the aesthetics of the video contribute, very artful. I feel similarly the emotion - maybe some of the key phrases "That's me in the corner", sounds so sad. Great reaction, great song. Shows the effect music can have on us (in a good way) - it makes us human.

Stipe told The New York Times the song was about romantic expression." I never knew this until last year so I did think it was about losing your religion. But it's not. The video was hard to make and it only came together when Michael Stipe tried out the dance moves. Peter plays a mandolin here.

This is a 90's release but a good one. I love the fact that ur BroActions r honestly true & touching .. VERY COOL!! Also how it affected each of u in diff ways. "Losing my religion" is a southern expression in the US meaning "losing ur temper" or "feeling frustrated". Another expression we use here that means the same is "I'm at my wit's end" .. lol. Of course everyone interprets lyrics differently & are affected in varying ways by words mainly bc our brains are diff. That's what makes the world go round guys!! I enjoy this song & interpret the lyrics from my "southern" mind so to speak. Thnx George & Patrick for awesome reactions here today .. B safe & well .. peace out✌🏼🤘🏼

Well, George, I've never felt emotional about this song - I agree with Patrick. This was the song that introduced me to REM, one of my favourite bands. I love this song and to be honest, I didn't really understand the lyrics too much - I just loved the music. I've never seen this video before and yes, it does have a bit of melancholy about it. However, we all react to music/lyrics in different ways, that's just the way it is. It was very interesting hearing your reactions and how you both reacted to the song in different ways. On a different note, are you intending to do a reaction to a Deep Purple song Hard Lovin Man from the Deep Purple in Rock album? I had this album way back in the 70s and now have it downloaded but I had not listened to this song for ages. My God, it's epic!! About as fast as Highway Star I should say, and I've been listening to it off and on all day. In my opinion this is one of Deep Purple's finest songs with fantastic guitar and keyboards solos. I saw an interview with the late lamented Jon Lord recently and he said this song was one of his favourites. It would be great if you intend to react to it. Many thanks guys, hope you get your happy mood back George!

I think music is meant to heal us so if a song hits me in a certain way & I start crying, then its obviously touched some pain within me so I make myself listen to it over & over until I don't get emotional anymore. Right now I'm working on Save Me by Jelly Roll. I don't think I even made it 20 seconds into the song & I was sobbing. George, I'm sorry for your heartbreak, but it's necessary to talk about that pain to get it out so you can start to heal. We've all had our hearts broken in love at least one time. *1. The "scenes" in the video are meant to look like Michael Angelo pictures. *2. There's a well known saying that's used especially in the southern part of the U.S. of "I nearly lost my religion!" It means that someone made you so upset that you would do things completely against your convictions!

'Regret' is right on gents. MTV wore this song out. "Hurt" is a song that will always be relevelent. 😞

I like how George gets emotional over songs.

When I had postpartum depression in 1993 (after the birth of my second child), I listened to this CD with my colicky newborn over and over. The melancholy perfectly suited my mood and mental state at the time. I still adore this entire CD.

And brother on the right... I LOVE how emotional you were. Looked like you were going to cry -- NO shame there. You couldn't stop shaking. The feelings in your face was raw and perfect. Thank you!!!

Endorse "Everybody Hurts." It sounds sad, but actually has a very positive message. And "It's the End of the World" is such a classic with both an interesting sound and message.

You two remind me of the left and right side of our brains , you are a great combination , a good balance , I am a someone who listens to the words first , of course the music is important but for me the words have to resonate ,

Art, Religion, Politics, and Beauty are just a thin veneer. I always saw this as a song about discovering you are not what you think you are, and your values are not important.
