r/Entitledparents In today's episode, OP was in Texas during the power outage. For some reason, his crazy neighbor Karen decides that she would rather live in OP's house during the outage, so she comes up and knocks on his door, demanding to live in his house. OP turns her down (obviously), so she forces her way inside and refuses to leave. Luckily, OP is able to trick her out of the house by telling her that he'll grab her a key, and then he locks the door behind her!

In 6th grade my teacher said "Schools should teach you how to say no." at the time I made a joke saying "No." but now it seems much more serious. My 6th grade teacher was a g. She taught us how to write essays and do projects. If a teacher is making you do tons of hard work which you don't need to do now remember that in the future you'll need it.
@SRosenberg203
@SRosenberg203 3 года назад
Exactly. Writing is integral to learning the communication skills that are required to really excel in life. Papers might not be fun (though I actually always enjoyed them far more than tests) but the skills that you learn have a consistent impact throughout your entire life, since there's literally no point in our entire lives where we don't rely on our ability to communicate our thoughts to others.

To be fair, they also said Cursive would be one of the most important things I'd ever learn. About to turn 26 and still haven't used it even once, not even in school since they tried to teach it.
@SRosenberg203
@SRosenberg203 3 года назад
@@russeshe001 Did they really say that? I had to learn cursive in school too, but nobody ever told me "it would be one of the most important things I'd ever learn". That's just silly. I don't think they even teach it in elementary school anymore.
@russeshe001
@russeshe001 3 года назад
@@SRosenberg203 They did. They seemed to be under the impression that if I didn't write in cursive, nobody would ever take my hand-written (Ha.) resumes and essays seriously; some teachers are more interested in pushing their ideals than teaching useful skills. Especially when 'tradition' comes into the equation, people seem to lose all sense of reality.

In 9th grade, my English teacher was amazing. She was exasperated with me at first, because - in her words - I was CLEARLY in the wrong class. I should have been in the more "advanced" class, while she taught those who struggled. It was due to scheduling issues, and although I tried to get it changed - she was stuck with me. Bless her, she usually just let me do my own thing. The best thing she taught, and I think it was in October or November... however - and she dedicated two full weeks to it - was a variety of "work skills", as she called it. She told us, EVERY DAY, that if we mastered these skills, our work lives would be much better. She taught telephone skills (how to properly answer the phone, take messages, answer questions, handle irritable callers, etc), interviewing skills, polite ways to deal with a boss while wanting to "rip them a new one" and much, much more. When I entered the work force, I was amazed at how well these little lessons worked. More than once I was complimented on things like "interviewing well", but especially my "excellent" phone etiquette. All thanks to that teacher, who actually brought in a telephone (not connected to a phone line, pre-cell phone!) and had us practice EVERYTHING. At the time, I thought it pretty stupid - after all, I had been raised with decent phone etiquette. Then, I watched my classmates STRUGGLE, and it hit me... these were the students who would likely be trapped in some crappy job or switch jobs often... my teacher was doing her best to give them a foot up. She recognized the fact they would struggle, and I really hope they took her lessons to heart and aced interviews, too. I do know that I started helping the teacher out with the ones struggling the most in class the rest of the school year, trying to put the ideas, etc, into a form they could easily grasp. She gave me a hug after the year was over (she asked first, cus of the "don't touch students" rule, and I agreed), thanking me for my help, and that some of those I had helped ended up with much better grades than she had dared hope for. I wish I could remember her name. Every so often, I am reminded of her by comments like these, where people wish such skills were taught in school. It may not have been a dedicated class to it, but I know that one teacher made a difference in that way.

I love all of my English/Writing teachers (even the ones I didn't actually take English classes from), but yours might even have them beat. Wow, do I really mean that? I mean, I'm talking about a woman who showed me that using Nintendo themed classroom items, examples, and even assignments are cool and acceptable; a man who showed me that sonnets are fun to write and (unintentionally?) built up my confidence in my acting skills; a woman who advocated for me and actually knew how to treat Aspie kids, taught me what unconscious bias was and why it was important, and taught my family that some standardized tests CAN be opted out of with NO consequence; the woman I saw as an older sister figure; and the Chaotic Good government teacher who is just a total bro of a lady, and whose son I will probably marry. I went to a pretty awesome Title 1/College prep school, so this actually seems like something many of them would teach. In fact, the more I type this, the more I wonder if the Internship teacher, or the Government/Humanities/English teacher who will one day be my MIL, taught some of the exact same skills and I just don't remember it right now.

A nearby town has a number of large redwood trees that were planted as civic road trees on the street easement. They had been planted a hundred years before but still belonged to the town. A church that was on the lot that some of the trees fronted decided it wanted them OUT, and the church had them removed claiming the trees were diseased and constituted a hazard. They weren't; redwood trees are famously healthy as horses and are very insect and rot resistant. And redwood trees that are a hundred years old are young whippersnappers among redwoods. Redwoods can live to be thousands of years old. The city fined them $80,000 a tree. This town is VERY serious about its trees. It's part of the town's culture.

These are the edits OP posted for the story bout the driveway EDIT The general consensus seems to be that I should speak to a lawyer and the police. I'm taking the day off to speak to a lawyer tomorrow. Also, a lot of comments about what is going to happen when I sell the house. I'm going to speak to my wife about it when I get home tonight, but I don't think i'm gonna sell the house. Hopefully I can put this house up for rent. EDIT 2 I met with a lawyer this morning. She spoke a lot, but it doesn't seem like she can do much. I did call the police though. When I got home earlier today the glass on my front door was cracked and one of my basement windows was shattered. I checked my cameras and my neighbor was knocking on my door for a few minutes before kicking my front door repeatedly. After she cracked the glass she walked around to the back of my house and kicked in my basement window before running away. I called the police and they were here in less than 5 minutes. I gave them the footage and they went to knock on her door. I was told that I would be able to get a restraining order. I'll post an update when I find out what is going to happen to her. We're still going to move, but we are most likely going to sell the house. My wife just wants to forget this place exists and I don't disagree. Someone tagged my posts as fake - not sure why. I made my first post because I wasn't taking my neighbor seriously and I was kinda of amused by the situation. I posted this one because a lot of you guys have been asking me for an update. I don't really want to post a picture of my driveway or house on a public site like this, so I guess believe what you want?

My college had two classes a semester that you had to take. After all is said and done, you have taken eight classes in college that teaches you how to interview, build a cover letter/resume, how to negotiate a salary or hourly wage, how to stand up to toxic bosses, how to properly call out, and different laws that show you that you can sue for unlawful termination, etc. It teaches you way more than that. But overall, it's amazing and I think every college and high school should teach them....

So working in a small shop selling VW parts we had all sorts of weird people and crazy conversations. Had a guy get dropped off in the parking lot and he comes inside the shop. Our showroom is the size of a large houses living room, not huge by any standard. Guy comes in and is drunk AF, it’s about 9:30-10:00 in the morning BTW. Asks about parts in a somewhat intelligible manner but is barely able to stand. So he goes and sits on a shelf full of parts damaging some of them. My co worker tells him he needs to leave the store and he does. He sits out front and just passes out. Co worker calls the sheriff and the guy is picked up and taken away. HOURS later the car that dropped him off returns and asks about him. Co worker tells the tale and the guy leaves. Remember this is before the standard changed to its normal to see some homeless camped out just any old where or shooting up drugs. So yeah, guy was picked up for drunk in public, only the second time I had seen it. Other was a fellow Marine who was trashed out in town. Cops picked him up and deposited him at Pendleton’s Oceanside entrance. He had to face a few things after that.

The Asperger's story ticks me off. I'm an adult with Asperger's, and wasn't diagnosed until I was 28 (almost 34 now). I couldn't hold a job until after I received my diagnosis and could use that as a tool to get assistance and prevent being fired for social mistakes (saying the wrong thing without realizing it's not okay, for example, because I'm thinking of the word or phrase in its literal sense, not cultural). Because of the ADA, employers are required to acomodate disabilities. In my case I must receive counseling/training on the error. (I never make the same mistake twice, I can tell you). This 30+ year old man has no effing excuse to not be out there trying. There are plenty of careers that suit an autistic person, *especially* a man with Asperger's. Asperger's is considered "high functioning". My brother is also Asperger's and he has a job (and a family) because my parents refused to let him sit in his room and get stoned all day. Same with me. TLDR: in my opinion as a woman who never even received my diagnosis until I was much older AND suffers far more because of the social issues of being an autistic woman in the teaching profession, he is lazy and his family is enabling him.

I agree that the grandpa and uncle have no business giving such matters to a 17 year old, or pawning them off to anyone without asking really, but there are some concerning red flags with OP in the post. OP mentions that the grandfather has depression in a mocking way, seemingly assuming that the quality of life of people with depression isn't altered, and that depression doesn't count as a disability. There are people with depression who sabotage themselves in their workplace, lie in bed for weeks on end, cannot bring themselves up to even eat or go to the bathroom. This seems like such ignorant behavior, and I wasn't aware that a 17 year old is qualified to say what is or isn't a disability in such a mocking tone.
@markjohnson7887

I have severe depression and even with drugs I still have to live with my dad. At 46 years old no less. Because often enough, I literally can't even force myself to do anything. Sometimes I can't even force myself to bathe for several days. And depression often comes with extreme lack of energy and motivation. It really bothers me that in today's day and age, there are still people so ignorant about depression. Which is a large part of the reason it took me TEN YEARS to get help after I started seeking it.. And even then, if you are on disability, you hardly get enough money to live. Where I live, a person on disability gets $700 less per month than someone working full time minimum wage.. It's disgusting.

As EMTs attended to me and prepared to move me into the ambulance, two Karens stepped OVER ME. One stopped right at my feet, looked down at me, and SPAT on my hand, hissing at me for "being drunk before 3 p.m. Then as they moved on, one kicked my cane away just as an EMT reached for it. Yeah - I have no trouble believing a Karen's go-to response at seeing a cane-bearing older man fall was to report him to police for public drunkenness.

I homeschool my daughter using the school district materials, and she's currently taking Careers. They paint this sunny picture of work as though everyone is so eager to see you succeed and there's nothing in the book about sexual harassment, conflict with coworkers or employers, anything like that. The most we found is a couple of lines saying that if you think things aren't quite as they should be, you talk to your supervisor. Then it said if the company won't resolve it you file a complaint with the government group that is over whatever business you're in. That's it. No talk about discussing it with higher-ups or HR, not details on how you go about lodging a complaint. Most of the content is about how to consider job options and network. And the book is 20 years old.

I had a neighbor, who at a later date passed away from alleged overdose, knock on my door one day. As soon as I opened the door, he tried to brute force his way into my apartment, apparently under the influence of something and bleeding from his nose. I'm not exactly a well-built guy, and this man must've had quite a few pounds on me, but I managed to ward off his attempt to push past me, and he then proceeded to beg to be let in, saying that someone was following him, before he went into his own apartment and locked the door tight. His SO came home only shortly thereafter, I explained the situation, and she managed to reason with him. That was one of the most tense moments I've experienced in my adult life. So if some burly woman tried to do what the Karen in the last story did, and knowing what I know now, I sure would be tempted to deck her, slam the door on her, lock myself in and call the cops on her for attempted home invasion. You just can't trust someone to be up to any good once they show that kind of ugly side of themselves.

This guy decided he already knew how to do this, so spent the entirety of the class being ridiculous. It was about half way he asked if he could drink and grabbed a wine bottle out of his bag that was already 2/3 empty. He also started making comments about wanting to stay at my place and refusing to tell me where he lived, got hostile towards any male that intervened (including a bus driver) I had been the only one to notice the bottle so far, so everyone who spoke to him was very kind and polite. The final straw for me was when I noticed he was falling on purpose and intentionally grabbing my chest. I forced his hand away and his response was to grab my hair and pull it, causing me to Nearly hit the wall behind me. No one really saw this either. I was shaken for a good while because of that.

A neighbour where we used to live cut one side of my hedges claiming “they were hanging over onto her property”. She rented an apartment in the building next door to us. I own 4’-7” on their side. So she had to pay to have them replaced. 4 hedges later, she had spent well over $11,000+ to replace them because she cut them back about half way so they all died (she cut into the roots). I think she tried killing them previously with some concoction she mixed up, but couldn’t prove it was her. It didn’t work anyway. They got a little brown and then came back with a vengeance. They were always pruned nicely so I have no clue what her problem was with us. But I would definitely call your city council and perhaps district magistrate. I think she’ll end up moving before you. I would also be splashing and making a fun sounding racket in that pool from dusk till dawn everyday. I would even invite people over to use it while I’m at work. 2 can play the “let’s make the twat-waffle neighbour as annoyed as possible” game. Just some thoughts for you anyway. This means that actual responsibility must be taken for their actions, and schools don't wanna teach kids how to stand up to corrupt pricks now do they?

I've had that conversation many times with my moms regarding my brothers future. I remember worrying about who could take care of my brother if something were to happen to her as early as 8 years old. I acknowledge that that conversation was not one that she should have been having with an eight-year-old but me and my mom have a weird dynamic where I've always been her emotional punching bag and the idea that I would take care of my brother has always been so ingrained in me so much so that before I married my husband I even told him I'll be taking care of my brother we're a packaged deal. when my mom was going through chemo I stepped up and took care of a lot of my brother's caregiving needs. We've known my brother was autistic since he was three when I was a one-year-old but I didn't learn I was autistic until I was in my twenties and I really wouldn't trust his care with anyone else because no one else understands him like I do I can advocate for his needs in a unique way. The idea of him being stuck in a care facility or Developmental Center is crushing because he was stuck in one for a while after my mother was in a car accident and CPS took them away it took years to get them out there was abuse it was horrifying. My brother is nonverbal but he has a job and a girlfriend and goes to school he has a happy life. Maybe the seventeen-year-olds uncle needs someone who can push for him to go to therapy and get his life together but I also agree it shouldn't be put on the seventeen-year-old shoulders especially behind the parents back maybe It should have been something he was asked if he was interested in doing because he's close to his uncle and his uncle should have been involved in that conversation as well. I Remember for a long time I resented the fact that it was just expected of me to take care of my brother and then as I've gotten older I realized nobody else can step up the way I can it was a choice I made myself in the end.

We live in Texas and were a part of that power outage. The problem is that our homes are not made to withstand cold like that, and we do not have the capacity to take care of the roads. So many people were having trouble dealing with it. For us, it wasn't a problem. We have a gas grill, so we could cook. We have sleeping bags rated for -20 degree F. We covered the windows and insulated the best that we could. We had filled up our cars with full tanks of gas and we have power converters for our cars. So, we were able to charge our phones and watch videos on our laptops while we did. I had one neighbor from down the street that said I should allow her to charge her phone while sitting in my car. I told her no and that she could charge it in her car. She said she didn't want to waste her gas while I was already running my car. I ended up telling her to get lost or I would have to call the police. The entitlement of some people runs deep!

The autistic uncle story scares me, because I have the same condition and I've always been scared of having exactly the same circumstances. But at the very least, I'm actually looking for jobs.

Autism isn’t an excuse for crappy behavior. Autistic people are just neurodivergent, not suffering from a disease or condition.

Being autistic does make it a bit tougher but it doesn't mean we can't take care of ourselves. It is saddening that people actually think that Asperger's is an excuse not to take care of oneself. Hope you find a job and don't let these kind of stories hold you back, I'm autistic, in my 30's, have a kid, and have never struggled for work.

@@joshbettle9262 I agree.. I have asperger's, (25f) and I have a job and am close to getting my first apartment.. I've had struggles, but I refuse to use my disability as an excuse for laziness.. Granted, we don't know where exactly the uncle falls on the spectrum, but in most cases asperger's is on the higher functioning scale..

I'm autistic and have chronic depression. it's already been determined I'll be on disability payouts after college while working about 15 hours a week max. it's great all of you are able to function so well, I'm truely glad. but its not smooth sailing for all of us.

@@nerida3347 It is not smooth sailing by any means, but we've been able to navigate the choppy waters for sure. Not certain where you are on the spectrum, but the chronic depression doesn't exactly help. I'm happy to hear you're making it through college and finding work while getting some support.
