I have been in the restoration business since the 70's. I knew a couple young designers very full of bitchen ideas that all were claimed to be Boyds creations. Boyd was a hustler money man not a designer builder kind of guy. In fact I was blessed by working on a couple of Boyds Roadsters. Both had blown motors. These were owned by older gentlemen and were definitely not abused or raced. I built 100 point show cars which is much more demanding than the so so stuff Boyds shop turned out. I watched Boyd purposely blow up a Mustang engine for the hell of it. Just red line it until it pukes a rod out the side of the block for the cameras. He was going with a crate motor like he usually does so I guess he thinks that's ok? That's disrespect for the car hobby as someone could have used that engine. He was an over glorified body and paint shop owner. He farmed most everything else out. Boyd and his ex wife were excellent at riding the employees asses to the point they walk out. *Boyd was a car salesman who happened to sell Hot Rods and wheels that young kids designed and built for him. Nothing more.* 20 years later I decided to stomach some of his shows and they confirm everything I have stated here. No fake news here!

Boyd did not respect anyone around him, and treated his staff like slaves. He was not a good employer. If he cared about his staff, he would have tried to hold on to them, not have a sweary rant, and find out why they wanted to leave. Instead, the toys would always come out of the pram. I did notice from the TV show, that there was a lot of bitter in-fighting amongst staff too.

Boyd Coddington is not dead, he missed the deadline, so Mike Curtis and Blue Bear and Charlie showed up with baseball bats, I don't know what the baseball bats were for

Became a mechanic when American hot rod was on. I hated these baby boomers. They were all like Boyd. Tantrums, throwing things. All I wanted to do was learn to work on Trucks and have a mentor. I was all alone for years. Any small things you would get fired. I hate the baby boomers who were in charge of shops. Us Gen X in our 40s run things now. Young apprentices are guided and helped. No one yells or screams. You can take vacations or days off and not get treated like a dirtbag over it. I hated American hot rod and shows like OCC and Jessie James…

Didn't know he was a Catholic - or dead, for that matter. Discovery Turbo Max is still showing repeats of "American Hot Rod" out here.

As someone who grew-up watching Boyd starting with the Silver Bullet, I was amazed with his machinist & designer skills who could create every aspect of a vehicle from billet. Yes, he gave hard times to others, but he remained dedicated and loyal to you if you did the same. Boyd will be remembered for his contributions to Hot Rodding. When was the last time you flipped on someone? Only difference was your moment of being human was not captured on video for the world to see & judge.

@@Ironwind1972 my opinion on it was because Roy actually worked and was very skilled with what he done. Boyd was an egomaniac who put his name and likeness to work that I'm not sure he was capable of doing. Heck even the name that carries his legacy, The Boydster, was designed by Chip Foose.

Boyd was not perfect, as none of us are. He wasn't the best person in the world; however, I really appreciated that he did not control the TV show. Employees were free to speak their minds. Some of the methods, used to restore the cars, were questionable; but that's what I really liked about the show. He allowed you to see everything: the good, the bad, and the ugly; and that's life. You really got to peak into what it's like to run a business; and, watching his show, you could really learn a lot about what works and what doesn't. Thanks to his show, I was able to do a lot of repairs on my own car that I never would have attempted before. From his show, I realized that even the professionals are not perfect...They have problems, too; and they just work through it. That lesson gave me courage to try things I never would have done before. For example, I ordered an aluminum radiator for my mini-van; and it was supposed to fit; but it didn't. So rather than send it back, I modified a few things, and managed to make it work. Other shows, like Chip Foose's Overhaulin, don't allow you to see anything. Everyone has a fake smile; they rarely have any problems; and everyone gets along perfectly. That is bullshit. We all know that that's not how it really is; but Foose controls the show and the employees. They all just pretend that everything is perfect; and also they don't let you see the actual work being done, so the viewer doesn't learn anything. It's just pure, mindless, entertainment.

I gave up watching Overhaling....too staged with glamour models floating around the workshop and pretending they're fitting gearboxes in spotless designer jeans and expensive hairstyles....the show is exactly that, all show and no substance. Now as to Boyd Coddington, you're right that they seemed to show everything, warts and all but it was apparent to me that the production team didn't like him at all and perhaps deliberately painted him in a negative light. But certainly from what was shown in work and personal relationships, both Boyd and Duane are portrayed as very poor examples of human beings. I suspect most of these businesses in reality shows would not be at all successful but for the fact they were being televised. I'm thinking Gas Monkey Garage and American Chopper here! Look what happened to Rick Dale. I would have loved to have seen more of the restoration and less of the family drama and tomfoolery!

I wish the show was available on DVD because I've only seen the few episodes that are on RU-vid. From what I know lots of people out there want to buy the DVD set; but it's only available in Australia. They won't even ship it to the USA, for copyright reasons.
