agreed, kids aren't dumb they're just inexperienced. They can tell when they're being talked down to, and if they resent it that leads to more defiance. Or they could become anxious, lose confidence, even resort to deception if they know that they'll be punished or dismissed for having their own thoughts and emotions. I guess I just wish parents would try a little harder to remember what it was like when they were the ones without any agency or freedoms, how they felt when the adults in their lives were being unfair or uncompromising. Obvs there's some things that can't be avoided, but being consistently honest and fair with a child will build their trust and make them more likely to listen and not give too hard a time. All kids are different, but everyone wants to feel understood.

My parents are a fucking nightmare, they're like this horrendous mix of "the old way" and adapting into "the new way" but in the most narcisstic way possible.

Who's saying they pretend to understand their child? What's wrong with actually trying to understand your child and validating their feelings. And no one is asking their child if they are in the mood to be disciplined. Gentle parenting is all about boundaries and consequences. In the skit all the kid is doing is having feelings in a grocery store. Why should that be punished? Why is wrong to help your child learn how to handle their emotions?

My plants don't quite have that kind of legacy but they've done wonders for my mental health. I would have had a breakdown.

I've lived in several HOA neighborhoods (all incredibly chill- I've never heard anything from anyone no matter how long my grass has gotten nor how many days my trash cans have sat by the street and people here park their boats and RVs wherever the hell they want on their property) and lived in areas where HOAs are prevalent, including some of the stricter ones and not one has ever included anything about the inside of the house. They're almost completely exclusive to the outside of your home, mostly to keep people's yards from becoming junkyards or from people being obnoxious about parking all over the street and making navigation through the place difficult and such. They're not coming in your house and I think most people actually EXPECT you'll change the locks when you move into a new house- you don't know who lived there before or might still have keys to your place. It's not an apartment complex. This might happen if you're RENTING a home someone else owns because most homeowners do retain the rights to access since they'll be doing any repairs and whatnot. But some HOA member? No.

Makes perfect sense. There are many places that house historical artifacts that either don't allow any photographs or ban specifically flash photography. It can damage the artifacts, but also they have to be careful for the sake of security too. It's also deeply disrespectful to film in a church, especially when it says it is not allowed.

Even in a contract with HOA, if they violate any laws, that contract is invalid and void. It's illegal to enter someone's home without their consent, even for a landlord, unless it's for an emergency on the property, like a pipe has burst in an apartment or they gave between 24 to 48 hours notice.

No self-respecting locksmith would do that without making sure the police said it was legal. As someone who lives in the UK, the very idea that a group of people can appoint themselves to tell you what curtains you can put up facing the street and to cut your lawn to a certain length every so often...and they have the power to fine you if you don't. While PARTIALLY true, the Confederacy was started using the official reason of Federal overreach and wanting States to maintain rights, the unofficial, and main, reason was they wanted to keep slavery going. People also get the origins of the Civil War mixed up with saying that it was ONLY about slavery, when it actually started was more so an attempt to reunify the country but the official reason changed to one about eradicating slavery (or something to that affect) because they realized how much more polarizing and agreeable (I was thinking of a better term but lost it) that was to use to fight. Especially promising slaves in the South a better life if they managed to escape to the North (with little to no help) and fought for the North.

That's something that got a little under my skin too. While she definitely doesn't look like how autism looks in my family (I was diagnosed at the age of 21, my older sister at 19 and my little sister at 12), it could still be a video overexagerating what some types of stimming looks like for different people at the gym (at least, that's how I saw it).

Yeah that kinda cheesed me too. I read that autism in girls can be VERY different from autism in boys, so just because she's recording it like that it doesn't mean it's automatically fake. But you know, redditors are morons so, can't rely on them to have critical thinking, or any thinking for that matter.

I think the comments about how fake it looks aren't taking into account that this is basically a reenactment. She isn't actually stimming in the video, she's demonstrating the behaviors. It's hard for a non-actor to realistically show stress behaviors when not stressed, and that's why it looks weird. Stress is too unpredictable to reliably record.

The house across the street from us has had weekly yard care ever since we moved into our house almost four years ago. One time, about three years ago, I hear the yardwork company's lawn mower start up, but it sounded a lot closer than usual. Glance out...and there's the yard company, mowing *our* front yard, getting awfully close to where we had some plants my husband was trying to grow, and taking a weed trimmer to another part of the yard while kicking up dirt and debris because they're working through an area that's basically wood-chipped tree bed rather than actual grass. I immediately went outside to ask what they were doing, and then pointed out where their paperwork had the neighbor's address, and where our mailbox had a *different number* than what was on the paperwork. Cue confused looks and a few reiterations of "not your yard?" before they caught on that they were doing the yardwork at the WRONG HOUSE. They promptly hightailed it across the street with the barest apology. All I can figure is it was a different work crew from usual that day. Luckily nothing was irrevocably damaged, but if hadn't been home, goodness knows how far things would have gone before (if) they caught on. The plant-spraying prank would have had me *furious* regardless of explanations or apologies.
