I grew up with the "Be a man, don't cry, resolve things with your fists, these and those people are bad" kind of upbringing. This included getting literally beaten with objects as punishment. Just because your own childhood was miserable doesn't mean you have to pass that on. Let it die with them, and smile over the grave. Then go play dolls with your kids, kiss and hug them, and tell them you love them everyday.

My mom used to show up unannounced, and when I tell her to leave she sits on my sofa, acting like she owns the place. And that is why only my dad has a key to my place, and he knows not to bring her along ever.

Parents that aren’t concerned about mental health piss me off. I used to have suicidal thoughts and I still have depression (I don’t feel comfortable saying the reason why). Luckily I had great parents that cared about me and took me to the doctor to get help. I remember once in year 6 (I was 11) that I was suicidal and really needed some help. My mum yelled at me for 2 hours about how suicidal people are selfish and don't care about anyone else than themselves. That they are weak minded and weak willed. And she wonders why I now I have anxiety, trust issues, and potential personality disorders.

My dad doesn't 'believe' in my emotions, but when I told my mum I was struggling and about my SH she took me out, bought me a 'happyself' journal, gave me a load of notes on why she loves me, and bought me chocolate which was really nice. :3 Her actions later gave me the strength to come out to her as pansexual. She was- and still is- 100% accepting. She always praised me for talking to her about things. When my dad says nonbinary and homophobic things, she'll defend me when I get told off for arguing back. When I mentioned how it was getting worse, she proceeded to help me even more. She's honestly part of the reason why I'm doing good now. Although, like I say, my dad doesn't really help. If they believed they could talk openly without judgement, humiliation, condemnation and retribution, they would. So violating their privacy doesn't make you a shit parent. It really gets on my nerves when parents dont believe their children when they say "Mum i have ____" or when the child says they are suicidal or depressed. That is your child. If you do not believe your own children when it comes to mental or physical health, just try and be understanding and not be an asshole. Be a parent for Christ's sake, Be there to comfort and help your child/children.

probably one of my best insane parent stories is last year when I got in an argument with my parents about blm. i ended up crying because being yelled at is a trigger but my parents took that as me being too stupid to understand my arguments. I found out later that my dad posted about it on facebook saying "before you get in an argument with someone make sure they're emotionally mature enough to handle it." Yes because bullying your 18 year old (I'm 19 now) definitely makes you the emotionally mature one.

R/insane parents gives me so much perspective. I dont necessarily get along with my mom, but she has never been anything than misguidedly supportive. Im going to call her and thank her, she's a little confused but she's got the spirit.

It's not even that you're doing something wrong, it's just that it feels embarrassing showing something you enjoy doing so much with someone that you arent 100% sure will react the same way. So it's easier to hide it away then go through the potential embarrassment.

There was a really beautiful mini-fiction I read a while back about changeling/fae children who grew up with loving and supportive human parents. These kids would have challenges and different ways of dealing with the world around them, but these parents would help them find outlets for those unique abilities. They all grew up and made a good living, getting their 'happily ever afters', and I really do think that was an amazing message. (Especially given the potential correlation between real life "changelings" and autism/mental health issues)

Man my mom won't acknowledge that my mental issues actually effect my life like I say they do, simply because I don't act like the stereotypes associated with them. Depression? When I was in middle school I was diagnosed with depression but before that I was having suicidal tendencies and my dad had originally thought it was just a ploy for attention. But once it happend multiple times he realised it was serious and changed and I'm happy about that. He is not a terrible or bad parent, he is an amazing dad and while I'm not an athletic person now, I was in elementary school and my dad understands that which im happy for. He has given me so much life experience that I am forever grateful for. I hope all who read this have a good life, and if your a parent and think your kid is hiding something they might be feeling guilty so just ask, if they say no but seem unsure ask ONCE more. That's it ONCE more, not twice, ONCE. If they say no and ask why, just say that you want them to be comfortable talking to you about most things, not all things because there are some things that arnt a conversation for a parent to child. Just be a good parent and let your kid have independence but dont leave them alone. One way I bonded with my dad was helping him do things around the house or for the car. I am not a car person but I know how to change a tire, the oil, and more thanks to him. One time we needed to change the belt on the lawnmower and he didn't know how to that so we looked it up and found a video explaining how to do it. We watched it and did it ourselves and now I can do that myself. Just do things like that with your kid and boom bonding.

I was "unschooled" my entire life. Horrible, negligent and abusive family with a mother that just did not have the time of day. I didn't learn the alphabet until I was about 8-9 and it wasn't until last year, at 20 years old, that I learned what "arithmetic" was. I'd taught myself everything I ever knew because no one was willing to waste their time trying to teach me because I have a hard time learning (some kind of disability, not sure what it is though)... In the past year thanks to quarantine I’ve been getting back into drawing and I wanted to show my mom my drawings because I’m proud of my progress. When I showed her something recently, a Discord notification came up and she physically held my phone out of my reach so she could read the message (thank god it wasn’t anything bad), and she accused me of hiding things from her. Btw I turned 21 last week.

It took a teacher to make my mom realize that I'm a bit blind. I have been trying to tell her and prove many times before that I can't see too far and she kept saying that I was being dramatic. Now I finally wear glasses and can actually see lmao

I do want to live with my dad, my mother doesn't like it though. My dad left me when i was still a toddler. And my mom would say something like: he left us, not me, so i don't understand how you want to live with him. My mom makes me wanna leave even more sometimes.

I went to college to study animation and graduated May 2021. Despite the advice of every guest speaker and professor imploring all of us to work on our portfolios before applying to animation jobs, my mother insists that I need to disregard their advice and should simply apply anyway. She has taken my car keys, and makes me update her on my progress every two hours. She even attempts to prevent me from seeing my girlfriend of 4 years (the woman I intend to marry), claiming that by spending time with her, I'm wasting time/blowing off my responsibilities and should be working. She calls me lazy when, or disrespectful when I attempt to work at a pace that won't burn me out, or take a day to relax (after having finished a 2 year program where we literally made a short-film as a class like a film studio production and working constantly.) as though the career that I CHOSE is something that I need to prove to them that I'm serious about. After I just graduated. She plans to keep me working and updating her, like a 13 year old who's failing 6th grade for the 2nd time, until I finish my portfolio. I'm nearly 24... (I understand that I am beyond the normal age that people tend to stay at home, but when the pandemic hit, it was the most financially stable solution.) She has always called me lazy, or a liar, simply cause she wasn't able to physically see how hard I was working while in college. Even though I passed all of my classes with nearly flying colors (Majority of A's and B's, I even got on the dean's list almost every semester.) But yeah... I'm just a lazy liar, who doesn't actually do his work apparently...

I am not sure if it's my fault or not, but my Dad would almost constantly yell at me and my sister about us being lazy and not doing things correctly. Now- My sister is actually really lazy, but I constantly try to do my best to not be lazy. I do my chores early and I sometimes hurt my back doing other things for him. I even get stuff for him when it's right behind or next to him.(Because he is getting old and his knees hurts) But when I try to take a nap because I never take naps on online school(so I go 5 days without taking a nap)and after doing chores or when I'm on my period, I take long naps to get some more energy. But my Dad thinks that I'm being lazy and he judges me for it. It makes me feel incompetent and unfufilling whenever he says that. He came from a pretty horrible family, so I can't really blame him. But sometimes I wish he wasn't so loud and angry all the time.

when i told my mom about my social anxiety, she started telling me that i didn't have anxiety, that she had anxiety and knows what it looks like, that she would know if i had it, that anxiety is life-long, and that what i had was, and i quote "just a phase". luckily she does listen to reason and it only took one quick google search to shut her up. anxiety often develops during early teenage years and can go away/lessen in severity later in life. anxiety looks different on different people, and something people are often anxious about is telling people that they have anxiety. sorry for the rant, i've been holding onto this for a while.
