When I was 18 and working in Shoprite as a cashier, I had an older gentleman in is 70s or early 80s on my line. I just had a tattoo done on the inner part of my lower right arm below my elbow. He said he liked it and asked me how much it cost. I replied $200 after the tip. He rolled up his sleeve and showed me a faded Marine Corps tattoo and told me how he and a few buddies had gotten tattooed on leave in 1944 after their first battle in the Pacific in WW2. He said it cost him $5! I shook his hand and thanked him for his service. It was the most memorable day I had at that job and one I will never forget.

I just met R. Lee Ermey at a motel he was staying at in downtown Phoenix. I was outside eying a USMC themed Jeep and he came out. I said, "He, aren't you Lee Ermey" ? He replied, "Yes I am". I almost didn't recognize him with the ball cap and 5 days of beard stubble, but overall he looked and sounded pretty "chipper". I asked him why he hadn't been on TV for a while and he told me he has a new show called "The Gunny" coming in a few months. I didn't bother him with a photo or autograph request as I'm not into that, and we chatted for several minutes, then I bid him farewell; he was very friendly and I didn't get any impression that he wasn't open and accommodating at all - a nice man.

I actually have that, similar ar least. See, mine are ALL on my back. My first is AusCam DPCU with the 1RAR Badge in the middle (about 2x2cm square camo with the badge in the middle). That is on my left shoulder blade. On my spine, to the right, is multicam with the 2CDO badge. On my right shoulder blade, MARPAT with the USMC Globe, Anchor and Eagle on it, after I served with a few Marines (I didn't get desert MARPAT as I'm just the wrong skin tone, wouldn't look good). Below my 1RAR, I have Navy DigiCam, and a SEAL Trident, after I went and got shitfaced with a few SEALs on holiday in the States (guys I'd met on base in Afghanistan.) To the right of that, I have Army UCP and the 75th Ranger Regiment Tab, along with a Christian Cross, as a US Army Ranger medic saved my life and my mate's life, then was sadly shot three times and killed. To the right of THAT, I have the old US Army greens, not sure what you yanks call it, and the unit crest of the Green Berets (US Army Special Forces.) The story behind that one is a bar fight, a mini car chase and a trip to the hospital with some newfound mates. None of them are alive today (god rest their souls.) Below those last three, in the small of my back, roughly halfway down-ish, I have a tattoo of the Victoria Cross with the names of the WoT recipients (three of whom I've met personally) and the US Navy/Marine Corps Medal of Honour, with Kyle Carpenter and Mike Murphy's names done on the ribbon part (Kyle's on the left and Mike's on the right. I actually met Kyle post-MoH, and sadly I never met Mike, but I did meet Mr. Luttrel and talk in depth with him about Mike, and he agreed that Mike and I have very similar personalities and that we would've been great friends. I still hold that moment dear in my heart even to this day, knowing that a very close friend of an absolute legend believes that we would've been mates is an honour I hold very close to my heart.

When I was in the USN, we stopped in Spain and we hit the beach and the ten of us were like a mobile earthquake. We all decided to get tattoos. So we stop by this seedy little shop and the first nine of us got tattoos. I was the tenth and chickened out. Of course I got razzed and called pussy and the normal bullshit. Two weeks later, all nine of my buddies were in the sickbay with massive infections, and all nine had contracted Hepatitis C. No shit, everyone of them. That was in 1986. I am the only on still alive. The last one died last year and he was yellow as a ripe banana. It was awful I thank God everyday I backed out. Now, that is an extreme case, but it happens every day. Most places follow a rigid sanitation program and the chance of disease is very small.

As a former tattoo artist what he says goes along with my own advice i gave clients. If you can' cover it with a 3 piece suit then don't get the tattoo there. It isn't about freedom of expression or choice, yes we americans hve those and it is good. But seriously you never know when you may go to court in the right or in the wrong, and the judge will see face hand and neck tatts as piss poor judgement and do his judging accordingly.

Tattoos don't mean shit. It is what is inside of a man that is important. I've seen big, strong jocks falls down and cry like babies under fire and I've seen little guys with glasses stand up under fire and fight like the devil was in them. Ermey is a good man. He is right about tats in the military. You are representing your nation. Try not to have naked demons all over your forearms if you are on duty in short sleeves.

Bill W it's been called. jokingly, nerd rage; however, those big guys, it seems, have all those muscles to make up for them being, for lack of better words, cowardly, and those so-called nerds, quite oftain, the little guys with glasses on who fight like the devil himself, they know true courage
@bwalla50
@bwalla50 9 лет назад
Nico Ferguson Everyone has tatoos nowadays. It doesn't make them tough guys. It just makes them tatooed. A lot of people are going to look stupid when they get old and those tats look silly. Of course they will also be deaf from listening to loud music rather than mortar and artillery blasts. As long as tatoos are associated with "the bad side" guys will get them for the same reasons that country folks went from calling longhairs sissies, to wearing their hair long and calling themselves "outlaws". It's a pose for most people.

+Bill W There are some tattoos I understand, others I find absolutely stupid. I almost got one at 18 and so glad stuff kept getting in my way. Tastes change, and you grow up. Having a blaring reminder throughout your life of the mistakes you made as a kid is not something I want. When the tattoo means more, then I understand. Military men with their company insignia tattooed on them is something they will be proud of their whole life, and is not the same thing as having flames, skulls, and bullets tattooed all over your body serving no purpose but to make people think you are tough. No offense if this hits home to anyone, it is just not something I find appealing.

My grandfather told me a story about serving on a destroyer escort after the Korean War. One day they arrived in a port and a bunch of the men were going to go get their first tattoos. My grandfather declined and was heckled by some of his shipmates, he said he would think about it. As they returned, a bunch of marines were showing off their new tattoos and were boasting about them. A bunch of UDTs were also boarding at this time. The marines, feeling tough, bumped into the UDTs and gave them shit for "being in their way". The UDTs proceeded to kick those marines asses. As the marines were being reprimanded and tried pathetically to blame the UDTs, my grandfather swore he would never to get a tattoo. He said it is a badge worn by the insecure to look tough.

Back in 85 when I was in the Navy I went to get a Tattoo and spent a good hour looking in the book for just the right one that I liked... I showed it to the guy and he looked at me and told me very firmly he wouldn't do it, I was upset as that was the only one I wanted, it was this big dragon that started on the shoulder with his tail wrapping around my forearm and the tip of the tail stopped on my wrist, now his reason was valid, but I was a young punk, I got all bent out of shape over it, his reason, my arm was far too skinny and I was too young, the young part was what didn't sit with me, I was 19... but he had a point, I would grow and my arms and chest would get much bigger and that awesome tat would look horrible when it got stretched out.. today I am glad I never got it.. just for THAT reason, I still wanted to get it later, but by then the moment had passed

Michael Kagan said it all pretty well and I'd have to agree with him totally. I always like to say on this subject that if you want to be certain of making a lot of money on bets, just put two men in a locked room, add a bottle of drink (optional), a difference of opinion and just slowly turn up the heat. Then bet very heavily on who will be the first to raise their fists to the other. Rarely will you lose your money betting on the tattoos. Its narcissism and that by degree is a measure of a personality disorder which includes among other things, self loathing and poor self esteem all in all. "Look at me. Look at me. I really am a man after all." "Aren't I?"
@Petey0707
@Petey0707 10 лет назад
You may be a complete idiot to think tattoos are about narcissism and being "manly". What of all the women who are getting them nowadays? Body art is just that, art. Just because society implies it as something doesn't mean it is.

i'm tattooed, i have a biker-beard, i play games, listen to deathmetal, father of three, my parents have a functional marriage even if they no longer quite understand what marriage is (tl;dr= alzheimers) and i work in the medical field. only problem so far? our hygiene supervisor hates my beard, but thats about it. it's so easy to judge people. it's just that the actual reality hardly ever agrees with you. i dunno how things are in third world countries like US or Australia, but back here in real world, things tend to make sense.

He basically summed up my thoughts on it. Keep it constructive....stop nitpicking. There was a Sergeant recently with a 280 PFT, excellent rifle scores, and just got back from a tour. He got kicked out for a MARINE CORPS TATTOO on his arm. If America gets into a war, are they just gonna pick all the clean beans or whatever to fight?? A lot of people who would (and did) make excellent soldiers have tattoos (often if not mostly non offensive). Like he said, stop nitpicking.

I am very glad that I never got any tattoos. I never broke down and got one when I was in the navy or when was riding my Harley. A lot of Harley friends used to razz me about it. Don't get me wrong I know other people like them and great for them. I however will keep the paint job that I was born with. It's like this....whats better.... a clean 57 Chevy or one with some stupid looking purple flowers painted on it I have many friends who are proud of their ink...I however am proud of my "clean paint job'"

I was joining the Marines at one point and was at the Military Entrance Processing Station and alot of people were there to join the army and national guard, It was me and one other guy going for Marines and i just happen to walk up to the office when 2 Marines were chewing this kid out saying he wouldnt be able to enlist cause he had a small sleeve tattoo, after he walked out i didnt see him again that day so I just thought it was completely unfair how he had to leave when he wanted to enlist, i saw the pain in his eyes but ya know its just a little decision to get some artwork on your body, pretty positive they even allow you to tat yourself after you join so theres no reason why all these 17 18yo kids with some tattoos shouldnt be able to join.

I go to this one bar and they have a tall, pretty blonde as a bartender. However, she has tattoos up and down her legs, on her arms and the back of her neck, and those are the ones I can see. She also has a nose ring coming out the side of her nose. Maybe some guys like that but most guys would nail it but never wife her up.

I dont have a problem with tattoos. I also dont have a problem with the military stance on them. they put you in uniforms that are the same, cut your hair the same, make you walk, talk, stand, and behave the same. military members have a professional look to them and i think that tattoos take away from that focus

the only tattoos my grandfather had were from his time in the navy... every milestone it seemed had a specific tattoo correlated to it. Crossing the Equator, going into the European theater, going to the pacific theater they were their permanent medals for being bad asses.. even when not in uniform.
