I was pretty pissed upon hearing what she did but I think that you should also consider the stress of her job and the fact that those documents were a matter of "life and death". she apologized at the end and I think her previous actions were justified.

I have heard of the PETA people stealing people's pets from their porches and having them euthanized. It is not uncommon for people to adopt the Thanos-mindset when it comes to getting rid of bad behavior. I love the band Cattle Decapitation---but, the ideas that they spout about people being total shit and needing to die gets to be a bit over-the-top. I mean, I know it is just to bring attention to people's adverse affects on the environment and animals, but I can see a vicious streak in a few of the altruistic people.

Having had to pull reports, even if it were raw data and I still had to format things to look "purdy" it wouldn't take more than a few hours apiece and that was in the early 2000's with clunky systems. How she got away with taking so long in the first place boggles my mind.
My daughter has been bullied aggressively two times in the last month by a coworker. He has blocked her path from leaving a room, getting in front of her to stop her from leaving while he screams at her. Her boss has done nothing to discipline this man for his behavior. Last week Friday, she gave her two weeks notice and suddenly her boss wants a meeting this morning to find out what the problem is. He also is trying to give her additional work that is not her job, but that of a of higher paying position that was left open by a woman that quit because of the same man screaming at her too. The meeting is in an hour.
My uncle did that shit to me. Except he sent his toddler(whom i love and she adores me too) to do the deed. The kid told me her mom told her to smile and laugh while giving me a bucket of pennies. Shes innocent and didnt know they were telling her to do something rude. Her mom claimed the pennies were the kids savings. Funny how the kid didn’t mention that. Her father(my uncle) told me he shouldnt have to pay for the 2 dogs he wanted. I told him he needs to at least pay for 1, especially since I’m only asking half price for BOTH(30 USD for both pups with shots I paid for and administered). He fought me, called me disrespectful and that I didnt know how to listen. I was a highschool student working overtime at subway to afford these puppies. I was tired. Hurt. I didnt know what to do. He begrudgingly said hed pay, hed send it with my grandma when she came over to his house to do his taxes. Ok, great. She comes home and has no clue what Im talking about when I ask “wheres the money my uncle was supposed to send with you?” I text him, he says my mom told him he could have em for free. I ask her, she says no she didnt. A couple weeks pass, cue 2 adults using their child to be a dick. Im just. Flabbergasted by them.

I like a good Uno-Reverse Malicious Compliance. *Third OP:* Shoutout to the staff in the women’s shelter, and to the women who got out of abu51ve environments. I imagine it’s not an easy decision to make. I’m glad Anna humbled herself in the end, because she really is helping a lot of women. As rSlash pointed out, OP likely saved that woman and her daughter’s lives.
An ex-roommate once demanded payment of my share of an unimportant bill within minutes of my returning from the hospital after watching my grandmother die. I tore him a new one verbally on the spot, and then I paid him the $60 or so in pennies. When I asked the bank for that much money in pennies, the clerks got nervous and had to go to the vault. They got an unopened box of rolled pennies ($50 worth) and then some. I even made it easier on them and accepted a couple rolls of nickels in place of pennies. They asked me what it was about, and instead of telling the story, I told them it was for a prank I was playing on a friend. Another roommate and I spent about an hour unrolling everything and putting the loose change in a bowl. I then dumped that bowl on the rude roommate's unmade bed. It was very satisfying.
That whole “bringing in change rather than dollars” thing is so stupid. I don’t know what people expect. Either A. You’ll have wait the entire time while they count to make sure they have the proper amount. Or B. They just won’t accept the change. Either way, the only thing you accomplish is punishing yourself.
Honestly, counting and sorting change is relaxing and almost therapeutic for me. I would have loved to count the Karen’s petty change while getting paid. “Jokes on you! I’m into that S#!T”
Little known fact that I recall from Macroeconomics class in college. Change is not considered currency. That is you don’t have to accept payment in it if it a large amount. I bring this up because my professor explained if someone refuses cash for payment. Then you are no longer obligated for that debt. But he then proceeded to tell us “don’t try paying your rent in pennies. “ for the above reason.
Holy shit the OP for the DV story saved her life. If he didn’t do what he thought was the right thing, that woman and child could’ve been murdered!! I watched something similar with a friend who has an ex bf like that, and he murdered her and her daughter. It was horrific, thank god for OP.
I hate to say this but in the last story. Its highly probable that they saved that ladies life. Statistics say that the most dangerous time for an abuse victim is when they try to leave. It's highly likely that the husband would have killed her or put her in a coma at the very least.

The situation with Anna and Judy was unacceptable. I work in a DV company. Any professional who loses her shit like that is a trigger for her clients - she is defending them from abuse while literally being an abuser! She would be fired on the spot in our agency.
Yes, Anna really got on the high horse there. Imagine what could've happened to that poor woman if OP had quit or been fired because of Anna's behavior, and it would've been entirely her fault. Hopefully she learned from this and won't let it happen again.
The second story reminds me of a day I had at work. It was stupid busy, and I called for backup at the register. A "gentleman" stepped out of line to tell my manager that no one was up there to help them. Fast forward and of course I get him. I scan all his items while he taps his foot impatiently. He paid cash, and he was getting three dollars in change. unfortunately I only had quarters, and rather than asking my manager to get out two dollars, and taking time away from his day, I pulled out three dollars in quarters. He asked me why I was paying in quarters, and I told him I was out of singles.
I once was at a business where some Karen also wanted to pay their bill in pennies. Well the Karen got irate when the manager or owner went into the back and came out with a coin counting machine 🤣 You would be surprised how many people try paying in pennies to get back at someone.
Under Australian law, explicitly stated excessive amounts of small denomination currency don’t count as legal tender. There’s nothing stopping a vendor from accepting it if they’re willing, but they have a right to refuse it as a form of payment.
In many countries we have to accept it. Working retail in the US I had several people pay $20+ in change. There was a coinstar machine literally 10 feet behind me but employees weren't allowed to use it and we couldn't tell customers to do so either
The funny thing is with the penny Karen, I would have just waited for her to haul them all up there and then just stated "oh, we don't accept coins for payment here" as it would be perfectly legal to do so and there is NO requirement to accept loose coins for any debt repayment. And if asked why I waited to tell her, it would simply be "play stupid games, win stupid prizes".
A little story about paying in pennies: There was a candy store near where I'd go to school. There was a time in second or third grade when I'd collected enough pennies off the streets to get some candy there. I was so proud of myself, but the cashier must've been so annoyed. Also if anyone's wondering, no, I wasn't broke. My parents just didn't give me allowance until fourth grade because they didn't want me wasting it on candy... like I just did lol
Judy, the managing partner is also guilty and culpable in Anna's abusive behaviour towards OP. She should have stepped in sooner as she said when apologies _finally_ started rolling out. Notice how Judy didn't find it necessary to call an all hands meeting until a *client* spoke up. She witnessed Anna abuse OP at minimum twice, took her side of the story and said nothing. OP told them where the issue was coming from eventually and again Judy said nothing. She was in the meeting, it was on her to say in that moment that she was glad Op discovered the cause of the discrepancy, thank you for bringing it to our attention, and telling Anna that there needs to be an apology. Instead, Judy said _nothing_ , and then continued to say nothing when Anna laughed at OP for tripping and nearly hitting their head. OP deserved a public apology from Judy for allowing the abuse to go on publicly, not a private, "sorry, should have done something sooner." Judy enabled Anna's ego.
it all spends the same, I loan money out to people and had a guy pay me in pennies. little did he know I know there are errors that float around in circulation I ended up getting a 1995 DDO in one of his payments which was a $15 coin in its condition so I got a little more then just my money back from his pettyness
I remember in the UK years ago that companies could reserve the right to reject payment of over 10 or 15 pounds if paid in coins to avoid small-change-based malicious compliance!!!
I have no doubt in my mind the OP in the third story saved that woman's life and probably the child's as well. I've seen people question why abuse victims don't just leave the relationship. Because its terrifying, and depending on person they could have been cut off from any kind of resource to leave like financial and friends/family. It takes courage to be able to leave, and like OP saw in the office many women she saw were frightened for their lives and needed urgent protection. The man forcefully dragged her back and tried to trick the people helping her. She left once, and he was probably planning to make sure she never left again one way or another.
I know someone who’s dad paid their final child support in pennies and dropped in in front of their house with a trailer. They donated the money to a domestic abuse shelter. Story went international. I can attest the dad was a real piece of work… not just from the incident

I imagine that her workload increased due to being featured in media. So she became stressed, it is common to react to stress with aggression unfortunately.
I'm petty as hell. I work graveyard shift at Jarl's Cunior. If someone comes through the drive thru and attempts to pay even $10 in change, I refuse service. Hell, I even refused service to someone who tried to pay with 10 different gift cards. I don't have time or the patience for that shit.
I tend to see two ways people end up when they overwork themselves or letting their jobs get to their heads: Either they fall into a depressive slump, or they become extremely snobby, agitated and violent.
I think Anna may have been working her field a little too intensely. She’s starting to sound a bit like the very people she’s trying to get put away and save others from. Not meant as judgement, it sounds like very intense and mentally straining work, she should just probably take some time for therapy and work through her own stress so it doesn’t turn into something worse. Even good people can fall into dark places, especially when exposed to that much darkness.
The last story. The same thing happened to me with daylight savings time. I was a courrier, I think it’s called (in English), it was a printer that time stamped any printed document you needed, and this was my first month there, so my supervisor, who was over zealous, and she didn’t like me because I was from Québec (this is when I lived in Ontario). She had me repeat myself several times, claiming she couldn’t understand me with my accent, she would call me a foreigner, stuff like that. The week after we switch time an hour forward, I’m at work, doing my job. But because the clock hadn’t been changed on the printer, maybe it was a fax (I never used it), she then would write me up for taking too long delivering the mail. I knew I wasn’t taking that long, maybe a minute or two longer on some days, depending on how much I had to deliver in the office. It eventually clicked in my mind, but I decided to wait until she would write me up so much, that I could risk being fired. I was still living with my parents back then, so I didn’t give a damn about being fired. Not a full week later, I get called into her office, and there’s more people in there then I was expecting. With me, we’re 5 people. She starts off about how effective the courrier needs to be, and that clearly, I’m not the man for the job. I understand she wants to get me fired, but I decide to take her down with me. After her boss talks to me, and explains the paperwork before me, I turn to her, angry, and tell her off, but I don’t yell. I tell her how I told her that I don’t know how to change the time on the printer, and until someone does change it, the time stamps will all be too early. Her boss has had problems with her in the past, but she was always by the book, so to speak, so he couldn’t get rid of her, but this, she could be reprimanded for it at least, lol. She didn’t like that, ‘cause that meant she would lose her supervisor status because she was still on her trial run, if that’s what it’s called. I worked there until the end-ish of summer that year (I think 2004), and I haven’t seen her since.
My high school has a cafè that I worked in my junior and senior year. There was a girl who was the cheer captain and two of her friends tried to steal 5 t-shirts(they had the school mascot and were 3 dollars each) she had to be chased down by one of my managers and out of spite her and her friends tried to pay in all pennies and got mad that she wasn't aloud to leave right away. She only had 2.79 in pennies and I told her she threw a fit and finally paid in card, we got to keep the pennies and had a 15 dollar sale. All pennies were used as a money off discount for the next customer, but she was very bitter and tried to pull stuff and tried to bully me and other workers that weren't popular/athletes but backfired( I heard about it from one of the managers and that she got caught trying to put pot in a girls bag in the middle of class). Paying in pennies is a horrible way to pay as it takes time away from the workers, you, and other customers
So a funny story. I was working on something else while listening to this not paying much attention to the video. Everything was fine until the second story when the lady put the first bag on the desk. I didn't hear pennies, I heard panties and was like what did rSlash just say. Had to read the text and listen again just to make sure this lady did not just try to pay her bill with a bag of panties.
I'm not sure how legal tender works where OP with the pennies story lives, but where I live I know that I legally would not have had to take that amount of money in coins. But, I probably would have let the woman bring all of the bags upstairs and then informed her of it. :D When I was a teenager I worked retail in a neighbourhood where almost everyone was on social assistance. I mention this fact only because of the pattern of currency people used to pay for their items (relevant to my story). At the beginning of the month most people paid their bills with $100 bills, often getting a small item such as a pack of gum just to break the bills and get change. But, by the end of the month most people paid for their items with coins, no matter how large the final total. I figured out early on that at that time and place coins were only legal tender up to their roll values (50 cents for pennies, $2.00 for nickels, etc.). If someone was a butthole to me then at the end of the month, I would dutifully count out the roll amounts of the given coins then ask for the rest of the balance in another form of payment. The Karen and I would then have some back-and-forth, with me explaining it was up to my discretion whether to accept more than the roll value, and I was choosing not to in this case. Inevitably, Karen would say 'but you took more than that for the customer ahead of me'. To which I would respond, 'yes, but that person has never screamed at me and called me names while I was at work'. Karen would have no response because, of course, she had done so and that is the exact reason I was refusing her coins. I taught all of my coworkers this trick and we mostly managed to train the Karens to treat us civilly at that store. Petty, but satisfying revenge.

Living in a small town, you hear about abuse if it happens. If a woman's husband hits her, some of the farm boys will "take him out for drinks" He will get a savage beating and a very firm warning that if it happens again, he will end up buried in a cow pasture.

While I give huge props to Anna for her work for abuse victims, I think she needs to take a good look at herself and re-evaluate her own behavior. It really sounds like her job (which is probably very stressful and traumatic) has gotten to her, and she needs therapy, because she's lashing out at the staff for no reason.
After Karen abandoned her penny vengeance, someone should have walked to the elevator, making a show of showing the elevator before saying "have a great day!" 😄
Actually that business has a legal right to refuse the pennies. Even though it's legal tender, you do not have to accept it if it's an undue burden. For instance, say you tried to buy a brand new car and pay with a dump truck full of pennies. The dealership can be like "Bitch please," and order you to leave. Same deal here, just on a smaller scale.
The attorney Anna deserved some serious punishment for her behavior - in house punishment - for treating an employee so badly. Frankly, op could have quit and likely won a constructive termination due to a hostile work environment law suit. Doing "good works" is not a "get out of jail free" card.

Yelling, berating and verbally abusing your staff about the abuse victims you’re advocating for is out of line. Ofc abuse in general is but you know they have trauma from their situation. Ofc they’re not going to handle yelling and swearing well.

There's nothing wrong with being lazy. The problem is that, no matter how lazy you are, you still have to show that you're necessary in your workplace. If you take credit for what other people do and have nothing to show for yourself, eventually they will figure it out and realize that you're replaceable and/or unnecessary.
It turned out the fax machine was an hour off due to daylight savings. OP said it was an older fax machine that doesn't automatically change for daylight savings. OP wasn't being lazy at all.
Man. Its stories like that last one that remind me that I probably shouldn't be a lawyer with how prone to emotional responses I am. It seems, that Anna not only learned her lesson, but ALSO realized, that OP was a huge help in the office. Anna definitely had a time of abusing, that is NOT ok, but she seemed to change in the end. Realizing that OPs attentiveness saved a woman's life, when this is clearly Anna's passion, must have been a little humbling. Any boss that yells at me and says I am incompetent and stupid is getting my resignation. I will not tolerate being talked to that way. Id have a choice few words with him/her as I walked out.
As a general rule, if I have to use more than a few red ( I'm in the Euro zone, so here the coins for 1, 2 and 5 cents are red-orange ) or yellow ( for values of 10, 20 or 50 cents ) coins, I only use them if I am using an automated cash machine and not in front of a real, human, cashier.
I am really glad that OP recognised that it wasn’t the real client, the shock that ran through me as I imagined what would have happened shook me up. I wonder if the older daughter of the victim was another victim or if she wasn’t treated the same way as the victim and was an abuser too.
Making them wait while you count is good, but something a lot of people don't realize is that you DON'T have to accept the pennies. Yes they ARE legal tender, but that just means they are a legal offer of payment. THere is NO law that says that legal tender has to be accepted. And another error that people make is they think that if you refuse legal tender it cancels the debt. Nope, the debt is still owed. What it DOES do is, since it is a legally recognized offer of payment, if you refuse it you can't add on any interest or penalizes for late payment.

In Australia, it is actually written into the Reserve Bank Act 1959, that you can not exceed $5 of any combination of 5c, 10c, 20c & 50c pieces… A payment of coins is a legal tender throughout Australia if it is made in Australian coins, but this is subject to some restrictions about how much can be paid in coin. According to the Currency Act 1965 (section 16) coins are legal tender for payment of amounts which are limited as follows: not exceeding 20c if 1c and/or 2c coins are offered (these coins have been withdrawn from circulation, but are still legal tender); not exceeding $5 if any combination of 5c, 10c, 20c and 50c coins are offered; and not exceeding 10 times the face value of the coin if $1 or $2 coins are offered.
In UK, there's a little-known law, that you can only pay up to 20p in pennies (unless the side receiving agrees to more). The smallest coin with no limit is £1. US should just do the same to avoid the smartarse assholes who think they teach someone a lesson when in reality all they do is give some poor cashier extra work.

Nothing with malicious compliance or petty revenge or anything like that, but I once had to pick up €2000 from the bank for my mom's work. It was an order so the bank obliged, but it was all in coins (as ordered). The coins varried from all values between 1 cent to €2. Imagine carrying hundreds of coins in 1 time in a backpack.
All depends on what your paying off with the pennies! I did this only once because a cop 'LIED' Saying I walked thru a Red light when in reality the light had just turned green when I started walking and it went red early! So I paid the fine in pennies and when the clerk said I had to pay the fine off with a higher denomination I told the clerk take this or nothing! She took nothing so I won and kept them
