Why is that that someone could get in trouble for giving a bad reference, isn't that the point of references to objectively judge someone's character? Who'd you even get in trouble with?
@@japanpanda2179 Yes, but they think it's your fault they didn't get the job because they're a shit worker, so they sue you for slander/libel. People do stupid stuff all of the time, sue, and get paid millions of dollars for it, encouraging copy-cats. Hell, someone can trespass onto your property, break into your house, beat you to the point you take an extended vacation in a hospital, clean out your house, but if they stub their toe while they're on your property, you're held liable, and when you finally get out of the hospital, not only do they own your home, you still "owe" them more money than you'll ever own in your entire life, on top of your medical expenses. I read a report where someone was able to defend themselves, and after the ordeal realized they'd have been better off if they just let the perpetrator kill them.
@Frank White in theory, your answer is 100% valid and correct and we should all embrace such an idealistic attitude. In practice, however, what's been stated is not actually propaganda. Most businesses that don't have ideal-driven or charismatic leaders that uphold truth and are willing to take risks to uphold it will avoid taking any action that might be construed (even wrongly) as culpability for a wrong done against any person. My mom works in HR for our town so I get some second-hand insight into just what a corporate mindset requires of its cogs. The whole "not giving bad references to avoid liability" thing, while horseshit, is nonetheless real.
@Frank White court and corporate are different beasts. It's not illegal to give a well-earnrd bad reference, but it's typically against corporate policy. Even if I could easily win the libel court case, I'd still be fired for not following the policy set by HR.
When I was in highschool I got fired from my first ever job because I could not be at a shift due to last second religion/family obligations. Despite contacting every single other employee I was unable to get my shift covered, so I missed the shift. This wasn't a big deal as I got a new job quickly. I found out months after being at my new job that when my new boss called my old boss for a reference he tried to convince him not to hire me. Outside of the already mentioned incident I had never had any problems at my first job and actively went out of my way to learn every position so I could fill any spot and be as useful as possible so I don't know why they hated me so much.
I had an ex boss who hated me specifically because I was friends with a coworker and she was jealous that cool coworker wasn't friends or more than friends with her. That's my childhood best friend of course we'll be closer than some standard boss and employee relationship. Some real petty childish people out there can have dumb reasons for giving bad recommendations.
Sometimes, there really is no reason for why they hate you. It just comes down to conflicting personalities. I once had an assistant supervisor at my job in college who hated me because we just didn't click personality-wise. The things I liked, he hated. For example, he was one of those "I haven't been a Nintendo fan since the SNES days/Nintendo should go the way of Sega" kinds of people, and I have enjoyed every Nintendo generation. We'd get into heated arguments about Nintendo's fortunes during the Wii U era. I advocated for a wait-and-see approach to see if they could turn things around like they did with the 3DS, and he was already writing them off as going the way of Sega. In retrospect, the Wii U flopped hard (a pitiful 13.56 million units sold), but the Switch has now outsold the Wii (and possibly even the PS4 and Game Boy/Game Boy Color line if recent reports are true). He also hated Skyrim, Minecraft, Steam, and Xbox, all of which I loved. When I won my Xbox One in an on-campus contest and was showing it off, the first words out of his mouth were, and I quote, "Sell it and get a PS4." About the only thing we could ever really agree on was a fondness for Legos. As much as I tried to find common ground and extend the olive branch, he'd swat it away every single time. Thus, it was those personality conflicts that led him to accuse me of doing things I didn't do and try to get me fired for it. And the one time I was late (during finals week), I was very close to being fired. Had I been just a few minutes later, they would have sent the paperwork off to HR to terminate my employment. Usually, you have to be late three times before being fired, but this was just once. It goes to show how much he wanted to be rid of me. I got so burnt out and depressed from that job, that our mutual supervisor saw how bad of a shape I was in. After a long talk, she told me that my only option was to quit. She was very sympathetic to my plight, but a week after I put in my two-week notice, she said that they already hired my replacement and it would have been too much money to keep both of us on board, so they were letting me go a week early. My final shift lasted five minutes. So the old adage is true: people don't quit their jobs, they quit their bosses.
I remember my granddad used to be very christian. He was against homosexuality & interracial relationships. Until my dad got an asian wife after the divorce, my niece turned out lesbian, and at the time I had a darkskinned girlfriend. He got everything he was against. Basicslly in the military you have two tiers, Enlisted and Officer, in 9 Enlisted grdes (E1-E9) and 10 Officer grades (O1-O10). E7 is fairly up there for enlisted but the lowest officer outranks the highest enlisted. That said, smart officers will listen to senior enlisted (E7-E9) since those are fairly experienced dudes.
A E-7 generally wont be reporting to any O7 - O10 they would report to generally a O1 to O5 depending on thier MOS even still a pissed off junior officer not fun to deal with

In the early ‘90’s I and a bunch of friends traveled together to Japan. One of our group was a Japanese language teacher but she was of European Heritage. Every time she would start talking fluent Japanese you could see the surprise & confused looks. My g/f really threw them for a loop. She is 5’8” which means she taller than all the Japanese women & some of the Japanese men. She a vibrant natural blonde. While not being muscular she was very fit...runners body. When we would travel on a bus, train or the subway she was being stared at often. Children openly and adults surreptitiously. Others in the friend group had to reassure her how she was doing nothing wrong she was a gaijin (foreigner) who just stood out...
Even if she wasn't fit or pretty she'd be stared at simply for being not Japanese. Even now in moderately sized cities and towns in Japan people pet your skin and hair and stare at you if you are not Asian, or even just a different region of Asia like South-East Asians, even if you are of similar height and hair color and style of outfit/haircut.
I feel you. I was a study abroad homestay student in a decently rural area (had to head home early due to COVID). As a white girl in an area that doesn't often get forgieners I got quite a few stares. My favorites though we're the kids at the middle school I passed to get to the train station. They would all I've each other these really confused looks and then start yelling hello in English when I would pass by.

Not in the hiring department myself, but I thought the rule was that if you're called for a job reference, all you can say is that they 'worked here from such to such'.
In the UK, a lot of people think it's illegal to give a bad reference - it isn't, but a bad reference has to be accurate. So it's unwise to express a negative opinion, but providing objective facts is fine - e.g. statistics on how often somebody was late, or how many written warnings somebody had received. But because of the concern about repercussions for giving a bad reference, many employers simply confirm the job title and employment dates, and nothing else. They'll usually state that this is their policy (otherwise you might infer that their unwillingness to answer your questions is because the employee was no good)
This is kinda weird but I felt that you really connected with me when you said “to those who are listening and not watching.” I have no idea why but I was listening at the time and, I don’t know, I really appreciated it!
I, along with others, have posted in the past that we listen to it podcast-style while we're at work. rSlash was one of the first people to start giving warning that a pic was incoming.
"Why would anyone want to learn Japanese, it sounds terrible!" Why should I learn English then? I think my native language sounds better than English.(My native language is Romanian, and i'm learning Japanese right now)
I'm gonna get called racist, but most Germanic languages just sound like angry gibberish to me. Maybe it's because most of the time I've heard the languages, the person is shouting.
Has Japanese work culture actually improved? And Tokyo is so crowded, I didn't even know you could FIT so many people in one city, and I'm near Toronto!
Japanese is actually one of the easiest languages for English speakers to learn (more so than say French or Spanish). It has more common syllables with English than any other language. The only major barrier is the cultural context, in Japanese, you have to us a specific context for how you refer to somebody. For example, it isn't uncommon to refer to a long time friend as "brother" or "sister" despite them having the same genetic relation to you as a banana.
I've been living in Japan for the past 4 years and some of what that lady said was really hurtful. 😣 I can't even imagine what OP felt having that conversation in real time with that lady. 😟 Japan and its people are so wonderful (sometimes the societal norms can be a bit whack though). I can't believe Onna can hold so much hate in her heart for them.
We have the "no negative comments about ex-employees" where I live too. Usually my boss just says "no comments" when answering about a question she'd have a negative comment to say about them. So she says nothing, but everything at the same time.
Get a camera on your car and post them causing trouble on the road to the web. Make sure everyone knows how the cops are breaking the rules of road and seem to be targeting you. They be shamed for awhile.
It's only illegal if the person gets charged/ticketed after doing what the cops incite an "Otherwise law-abiding citizen" to do. Entrapment laws are very specifically worded to avoid drug and prostitution stings from being thrown out of court.
I love these stories (and your voice is perfect for the style of content) - but the puppy bloopers always make me smile. It's so sweet hearing you interact with your doggie 😀
