The enamel on most of the mandibular canines, at the junction of the middle and cervical ⅓ is very thin. You may prepare the tooth and get into the dentin, which will make it very sensitive in that area. Every time the patient would seat the partial, "Zing would go the strings of his heart", meaning pain. You can place an acid etch cingulum rest with composite on the lingual of the canines to use as a cingulum rest. These are not as reliable long term. If you do that I suggest you prepare a slight ledge into the enamel of the canine and roughen the area to be bonded, before adding the composite. Your isolation from moisture must be excellent while accomplishing this type of rest. If I were to crown a canine, I would definitely place a cingulum rest on the crown, versus a disto-incisal rest as it is more esthetic and lowers the leverage placed on the canine by the removable partial denture..
