@Jens Nobel I'm not sure about contacting airports about information, but in the US, there are a series of ways to get information on weather-related happenings. Ie. One of my accounts has a setup for detecting lightning occurrences, but many of us individuals utilize a free phone app that gives us alerts within seconds (I've personally noticed no differences) of their official detection means. A few of us use it merely as an extra layer of protection. Weather-related information is accessible for free, though there are different subscriptions people/companies can pay for to have extra assistance in gaining notifications. I am no expert in this area, but I hope this helps. I also suspect that different regions within the US might utilize detection means due to dramatically varying weather. ie. Where I live, the weather can shift a lot, but you often have a some time to adjust for it. In other areas of the country, the weather changes can occur rapidly.
Trust me when you're rigging a roof and it starts swinging it's kind of like a rollercoaster but with all the safety gear you're tied off too you know you're going to be safe you're going to be safe but it's still scares the c*** out of you when the cables and stuff start making noises

@@redholm At low voltage* Once you're in the high voltage domain everything is a conductor, even the air becomes conductive within a 2m radius, you should see the gear HV maintenance crew have to wear to even get in the vicinity of a live line, not that it would have been an issue here since OP said the electric box had been isolated.

It’s just awful, and yet shocking, how much damage ONE person can do in a place of business. And that was on a STORE level. Imagine if you had a toxic DISTRICT manager.
As a cashier for the orange store and because of how well my managers treat workers that show respect the story saddens me but it is good to know that it could have been way worse.
I worked at an orange themed home improvement store for about 3 years. I was one of the best cashiers and they felt confident leaving me in charge if a Head Cashier was on lunch or called out for the day. I worked in the Head Cashier position for about a year without the pay or title and interviewed for numerous head cashier positions but was always turned down with them saying “You are much more valuable in the position you are in now, you are so good at what you do.” Finally, near the end of my third year, I interviewed for a full time head cashier position and as I was the only applicant, they reluctantly gave it to me, I signed the papers to transfer positions and went on a short vacation since I had the PTO and wasn’t going to be able to use it when I was Head Cashier. (Also, the person who I was taking over for had 2 weeks left and I only took a 3 day vacation). I came back excited to start up my new position to a girl from the garden department who no one like and spread constant rumors, training as a head cashier. Turns out they couldn’t wait the 3 days I took off and decided they would promote her instead and give me a 2 day a week head cashier position so part time, 16 hours a week. I was pissed. I did some digging and turns out, the girl had slept with the manager of our department and got the position. She had never worked a day in her life as a cashier so she didn’t last longer than 2 weeks, but by then I had quit and moved on. I was mad. I was furious. But now she has a child that is his, who she is trying to pass off as her boyfriends child, and has since been fired and I work in a comfy job with fully paid medical insurance and full time.
Yeah, my wife worked for home cheapo for over 12 years. In the end they distorted an incident to screw her over and force her out. She signed on to the big government ponzi scheme and got a job at a real hardware store. Within 2 months she was earning more money closer to home and with competent management.
I have a buddy that welds elevator shafts and he was telling me sometimes he would get attached to cranes on certain jobs or to this thing that's attached to a crane I don't remember what it is called. Yeah that'll be a hard no for me.
In Canada it is barely allowed to be on top of a "live load" but exceptions are made in some cases where there is no other option. High-rise rigger in Canada.

I usually wonder what the *competent* higher ups feel and think when things like the second story happen. They have a perfectly good worker then they get replaced by someone else not as good, mostly on another employee above them vouching for them or the former employee getting thrown under the buss. Then turns out the replacement does something so dangerous and stupid that it could end the company.
Considering the company involved was either Home Depot or Lowe's, both companies would probably settle in the tens of millions to avoid getting sued for hundreds of millions.

When working with heavy stuff you always need to make sure it's stable. ALWAYS. My dad lost a co-worker because of just that. He felt I don't know tired and tied a rope on a big important beam of wood for a castle they were fixing. He walked right under it as it was lifted. And the piece he tied up poorly fell on him crushing him to death. It's a true story. It made to the local news. My dad was shocked. Because he was waiting upstairs for this piece to be lifted and saw all of it. Luckily nobody got charges. Remember. Rule n.1. Don't mess with heavy stuff. Rule n.2. Never walk under hanging stuff. Run as fast as you can.

And classical conditioning in layman's terms is - your brain will associate unrelated things to physiological responses. Dogs fed in labs by people in labcoats associated labcoats with food, so they started salivating when they saw them (while not seeing or smelling actual food). Or in case of the first comment - he often listened to rslash's voice when falling asleep so the brain made a connection between the two and OP gets sleepy when listening (even though he may not be tired).
I’ve been in the power plant “shutdown service” process many times and there are SERIOUS safety issues everywhere you turn. ANY time a destructive ego about wanting to be in leadership was detected, even remotely, between anyone on our crew, they were QUICKLY removed from the site. Nothing gets someone hurt or killed on one of those complex sites than an a**hole on a power trip. 😡😡😡

Truth is, a lot of people *say* they have successful management experience, but in a retail environment, that is rarely the case. I mean, why would an experienced manager accept $40k/yr in retail when they could be making $60k/yr anywhere else?
Ive lost a gig due to a new manager wanting "his own crew" and not the previous managers crew. He literally tried to pick a fight with me to get me booted. In the end, turns out he was defrauding the store to fund a dog groomer salon his wife started. Still, its the one time I was ever fired. The story is longer, but you get the idea.
It's known as the Peter Principle, which observes that people in a hierarchy tend to rise to "a level of respective incompetence": employees are promoted based on their success in previous jobs until they reach a level at which they are no longer competent, as skills in one job do not necessarily translate to another.
Don't know but I hope op posts an update to this story involving the law suits. Pretty sure the company will try and get them on there side to just sue the ASM.
yes you stand on top of these loads while moving them. typically when we have to load heavy equipment on to trucks/trains/boats via our 80 ton rotator (think crane but in tow truck form, used for anything car or truck related from a prius to optimus prime.) we have 1 guy rigging and one guy running controls from about 50 feet away. 90% of the time the rigger stays on top of the load to spot clearance and such as we place the load in whatever hole was designated for it while communicating over radio to the guy with controls, who literally has his life in his hands. i own the company and have two teams of two; my cousin and i are one of these teams and take turns filling each role.
As someone who also works receiving at a certain home improvement store; big mood, OP of second story. My store is on the verge of the same sort of fiasco. Only problem is we don't actually have an HR rep in our store, which feels pretty sus. It's all on their stupid online portal. Makes it almost impossible to raise grievances about our utterly incompetent management.
Dwight is actually quite smart despite the shenanigans that he gets into. Quite similar to Michael Scott as well who was one of the best salesman at Dunder Mifflin despite all the nonsense that he does. The ASM on the other hand, couldn't even be bothered to find out if there was a resignation letter before accusations of job abandonment.
This is what I was gonna say. For all of the issues there are with Dwight, he is NOT incompetent, or stupid. This was even shown to us in the episode when Jim and Dwight do a sales call together. They absolutely nail it perfectly.
Correct me if I am wrong, HR doesn’t even answer to the manager of the store they work at. They only answer to the corporate HR leadership and executives when it comes to it. Its because they are supposed to be an impartial 2nd party within the company for the frontline employees. So that assistant manager doesn’t even have the authority to fire an HR representative.

Not only are you a wannabe street punk physically attacking someone with YEARS, if not decades, more experience than you in fights, but they outrank you so hard that AFTER they give you the physical beat down, you're going to have a mountain of additional repercussions on your head afterward.
That Larry definitely isn't a cable guy. It's better to leave who is in charge of dangerous equipment to the guy who is always sober and gets enough sleep everynight anyway.
In the last story, I bet when the store had to close for a couple days, they put one of those signs out front that said they were closed due to being “short staffed” because “people don’t want to work these days.” Every time I saw one of those signs, I assume there’s a story like this behind it.
The real question is was this home improvement store blue, because a lot of the treatment sounds familiar. HR that drops the ball, rude ASM, not wanting to give full-time (my store did this so they didn't have provide the crap benefits). I only have a couple revenge stories but boy do I have some crappie manager stories.
I was thinking the same thing. Worked at a certain blue home improvement store and the "Pro" in the story kinda gives it away (assuming the orange one doesn't also have Pro). Was reluctantly hired onto their merchandising service team and throughout my pretty short tenure (about 4 mo.) I was constantly picked on, berated in front of the team, and given the short end of the stick on everything. Was not put on resets or big projects, and always got stuck doing aged bays. Boss was a real prick. Whole chain of command was. She was buddy-buddy with all the store staff (including manager) and the boss over her was pretty much her but on steroids, so you can guess she was buddy-buddy with her too, along with the corporate entities in the immediate area. Whole team was female except for me. Couldn't contact anyone about the issues. Couldn't ask for any contacts for anyone higher up as that would've started shit on it's own.. One day got bitched at because I was "taking too long" on an aged bay that she pretty much wanted me to reset (without, you know, actually calling it a reset) and decided I had enough and left an hour early. Walked in the next morning & put my badge, discount card, and earpiece on her desk and walked right back out without another word to anyone else on the team.
OP in the first story is without a doubt a complete madlad. This story involves a madlad using malicious compliance in or to get revenge on a professional scale.
Finally I am here early. Time for more rSlash content. Also that last story the ASM is probably one of the reasons why we have a labor shortage in America. Because people are tired of working for bad management. You don't quit jobs you quit employers.
To be fair the OP on that one sounded like a bad employee to begin with. Bad employee and bad management doesn't leave much room for anything to get done.

I had a similar incident that happened over a year ago at one store and last year with my old store. It wasn't an asm that got fucked but a District Manager at a dollar store. The first incident happened over a year ago in Oct 2020. I received a call from my boss to come in early due to this incident. From I was told, the team in our northern part of our district walked out and she was panicking on getting that store running. What happened was there was a money shortage in one of the cashiers the night before. And that's all I know what started the walk out. The entire team quit and found jobs at their competitors. As for the second incident, I was the one who caused it. What I did contradicts safety of one's self and policy. In short, I pepper sprayed a guy in self defense. Side note related, dollar stores are seas pools crime. That includes assault. After 2 weeks, the dm fired me over that incident. A week later, my former boss and co workers all quit.
I think OP for the crane story was probably safer on top of the roof with his safety harness than he would have been on the ground with that thing swinging around. A wild ride, but safety equipment is there to ensure minimal chance of injury or death, and since he was taking care of his own safety stuff, he could trust that. I was worried Larry effed that up, too, and was going to get severely hurt.

Rigger OP explained that they stay on the roof until it's lifted, then leave the object to be lifted. Having worked with heavy machinery, I knew that protocol exists for a reason. The Safety Rulebook is written in blood, as they say. So, I was keeping track of the proper chain of events, as they should progress, so I knew what was coming as soon as OP started talking about whether the crane could remain within tolerances, even with an improperly balanced load. That said, it was delightful when you realized what was happening, and shared that experience with us. It was fun to know what was coming, and then to experience both YOUR surprise, and then LARRY'S surprise. Re: the conditions OP was working in, I suspect the "roof" is to a ground-level, or a partially or fully buried enclosure for the turbine. My reasoning is based on two points) A: it's a turbine, so likely for a hydroelectric system, and hence necessary to be relatively close to the "plumbing" for the facility, and B) The fact that the electrical control panel was close enough to adjacent to the roof to be within "wrecking" distance of the erstwhile "wrecking ball" (wrecking roof?) that the enclosure would either have to be low enough that the enclosure roof is adjacent to ground level (where the panel would be), or that the control panel itself would have to be elevated to at least a 1-story height. While either scenario is possible, combined with the nature of the equipment, it seems likely to me that the "roof" is not far from the ground, even when hoisted.
For the first story, knowing OP is super safety conscious (which is probably the MOST IMPORTANT trait an employee should have in that line of work), I'm sure he checked that the electrical equipment was powered off beforehand. OSHA requires Lockout/Tagout procedure for situations like that. The equipment is turned off and a physical lock is placed on it by the qualified individual, which only that person or upper management can unlock. This is taken EXTREMELY seriously because if people don't follow the rules, it can lead to incidents [TW for graphic content] like the workers who have been dismembered and killed by not locking the power to a cement/concrete mixer before climbing inside it for cleaning/inspections.
Technically, immorality is a fireable offense in an at-will work state. There is no reason needed to fire someone in an at-will work state. Therefore, any reason that does not violate one of the 6 protected classes works.
The construction vengeance is actually the best. It's one of the golden rules on leadership that you don't ask someone to do something you wouldn't be willing to do. That includes punishments. Accepting the consequences alongside his rival likely solidified the trust between them rather than breeding resentment.
Op literally explained how the lifting process worked. I don't know how you took until the story reached the two guys on the roof to realize it. OP literally told you that the rigging crew stood on the roof attached to a harness until the roof was fully supported by the crane, then they got off and moved it. As for the danger, I mean, you swing more than 4 ft on a playground swing. A swinging load is dangerous because it's heavy. if you're on the heavy thing, you're fine. It's like being on a bus hitting a bike. Sucks for the bike, but on the bus, you're barely going to feel it.
I’ve said it before and say it again, unless you’re going to be a manager at a retail job, do not ever ever go above and beyond what’s expected of you. They will never appreciate what you do, instead they’ll make your life a living hell and most of the time one or more of your coworkers will see it and make you the scapegoat because they think it’ll get them favors from management. Plus if you are the management type, you’re probably a soulless yes man or yes woman. Just remember no one is truly your friend and those places are toxic AF.
Why would he have? He followed orders and he made it very clear that it’s the rigger who is in charge. Scientists and then manufacturers make bombs and know what they can do but it’s not the scientist who is charged if they are incorrectly used.
I play the Yu-Gi-Oh trading card game competitively and have several regionals and other tournament wins under my belt I've seen some crazy stuff and I STILL haven't seen ANYBODY play themselves harder than the ASM in the second story
I work at a hardware giant store and I'm trying to wrap my head around an ASM having that much power. We have multiple. God that must suck but good on OP
Listening to the 2nd story is both empowering and sobering, as I also work for a well known Home Improvement chain and I've been fortunate enough to have friendly and competent managers who are always ready to have my back if needed. It's scary that one person could literally destroy a store with their behavior. I've seen first hand, some people are not built to be managers, no matter how much it pays
Yeah Larry's text to OP should have been grounds for termination. Also OP had grounds for a lawsuit for having his position changed in his absence if things had fallen out differently. Larry is a lucky guy.
I have to add another comment here. Common working folks, and when I say “common working folks” I mean those that do your ordinary “feet planted on the ground, walking around a warehouse, lawn, construction site, etc. type jobs, honestly have no idea how intense the job of being a rigger, a REAL rigger, actually is. The sorts of objects you are responsible for moving or placing added to the shear volume of safety requirements and observations, then pile on the understanding of weights and measures exhausting into the work activity places that job as one of the most dangerous and intense occupations in the world. The satisfaction at the end of the successful day is absolutely awesome. But the air of intensity at critical moments is off the charts. Gotta have a level head like OP here for sure. It’s an absolute asset. 😎

First story. I can relate to working with cranes, in my job we use a crane to take a canopy off of a F/A-18 E/F. When we’re doing this communication is KEY. we go through ever step in the pub and go over every warning or caution given all the way up until we have the canopy on the ground. it can be dangerous but when you use those aspects we are a fine oiled machine.
That last story has to be from Lowe’s. I currently work at Lowe’s and let me tell you that place is super sketchy and finds a way to fuck over anyone especially people who want to take a family leave. I can’t confirm it’s from Lowe’s but it sounds exactly like Lowe’s and with all of the departments too. Either that or Home Depot because they’re both sketchy to their workers
