He only got his job due to nepotism, which *only* works if you're able to prove you're worth the sweaty chops for the position. Combined with the rest of his extremely lousy behavior and personality that made him the exact kind of prick that you'd want to punch in the face, that makes for a terrible combination.

When I handed in my resignation and mentioned the name of my new company she got red in the face because she’d be applying there for years but could never get an interview. Why you ask? This story was actually kinda sad. I'm happy op got lots of vacation and is now doing much better for himself, but that doesn't change the fact that a whole year of his life was basically stolen from him. Same sort of thing happened when I was working for a hardware store. Employees left, their workload got put on me. Pretty soon I was responsible for almost all physical work in the store, and they had been hiring teenage girls as store staff because they could pay them next to nothing and didn't care enough about the workings of the store to ask for more. I went back to school and got a degree in architectural engineering, and when I gave my 2 weeks, they scrambled to find replacements, but they couldn't hire just one person to do my work and none of the current employees could physically handle my work. They struggled for a while and eventually they were able to get the work done, but they had to hire 5 people to do my workload. In the meantime, they lost a lot of business because the workload slowed to a halt.

I felt this one hard. I’ve been with the same company for over 9 years and for the last 6 I’ve been getting passed up for promotion for the company to instead hire new people. The first 4 of the last 6 years they’d hire the new person, then ask ME to train them for the position I’d been passed up for until I asked “Why am I in charge of training them? If I’m so qualified and knowledgeable that it’s my responsibility to train them then I should’ve been given the position myself and I need to talk to a lawyer because obviously I’m being discriminated against.” After saying that for those 4 years and deciding to get one of the higher ups to train the new people, they finally stopped asking me to train the people they’re hiring over me. I’m still going for the promotion, but I also don’t do anything above my pay grade anymore and they don’t try to talk me into doing it anymore either.

I was qualified for one of the highest paying jobs, and that's exactly what I did. After 10 years of working there, I was stuck on the bottom because my supervisor hated me. Even though I was the MVP of the workforce, he wouldn't give me a chance. One day, a co-worker played a prank on me so I did the same, which got me in the sights of HR. I was fired so I spoke to the employment agent to see what job I was qualified for, and that job was in the same company, but this time one step over my old supervisor. The smart employee would have been out the door when his "promotion" disappeared or when his assistant quit...bad bosses are only successful on the backs of doormat employees. I’m like you, rslash. I felt this one all the way to the bottom of my soul. During the recession, everybody in my small department (there had been five of us, which was a reduction from the seven who had been there when I first came to the department) and I did everything. I taught my classes, I had to keep the classroom door open so I could also be the receptionist, and I had all of the calls going to voicemail when I couldn’t get to them. Because we had no actual manager, a woman from another department came down two days a week to take care of things like budget and things that were out of my pay grade. When we were finally assigned a manager, he was less than happy to see that I had been doing manager level work and he did everything possible to keep me in my classification. Needless to say we clashed a lot, because I had been running the whole damn department for nearly a year and other than the person who came down to take care of stuff that I didn’t have access to, had done a great good job. By that time we had a receptionist so I didn’t have to run and grab the phones all the time, but I ran everything else. When we finally got someone else to replace him - because they knew that there was a lawsuit in the making if they didn’t - I was finally happy, but we all knew that I needed to be up to a senior level. My boss tried to do it, but there was always an excuse. Since I was close to retirement, I’m sure they knew that they could get away with it. That boss’s name, by the way, was Karen. She was not “a” Karen, because she was and is one of the most wonderful people I’ve ever known! lol So yeah. This story and your story really hit me. Been there, done that!

Had that in my previous job. I always had to "prove myself" when in reality they just wanted to compare several people to each other or just wanted some guys to put in extra effort. At one occasion i actually got promoted until they demoted me a couple weeks later saying "HR cant allow as many people in your position anymore" Jokes on them. I didnt do the extra work anymore, didnt put in the extra effort I did the entire time and the guy they had left in the position was on holiday for 8 weeks and 3 weeks of scheduled quarantine afterwards. My bosses were overworked before, but they definetly shot themselfs in the foot with that move.

Well, to my knowledge Petty - something small Pro - something big, carefully planned out with VERY lasting effects Nuclear - Pro but sometimes with darker twists and others getting involved in the crossfire who never really had anything to do with the situation MaliciousCompliance - going along with the aggressor's demands knowing it'll backfire on them So, yeah, pretty different but, in the end, they all give that satisfying feeling of having someone get their comeuppance.

My first job as a programmer, starting out as a contractor before being hired, I ruffled some feathers by saying no to co-workers about a programming change (it would have been a HIPAA violation) and having a weird sense of humor. In the meantime, I had modernized some scripts so that 90% of the time when we got a new client, one change had to made to them instead of developing new scripts. Literally taking 3 weeks of work over several departments to 5 seconds of typing. I asked for a promotion but was denied because we were in a hiring freeze, and I had a reputation. Manager told me that when the freeze was over, if he hadn't had a complaint about me, he'd promote me. In the meantime, my team lead (great guy) was creating a paper trail. Our small team got dumped on a lot by other departments, and he was tired of it. By the time he and I went to talk to the manager, we had a binder worth of proof that 99% of the complaints against us were others screwing up and doing a CYA. Manager was frankly stunned. Team lead left, and I stayed. Manager (Randy) was confused. So, Randy. Had any complaints against me? Um, no. Hiring freeze over. Yes. Thise were your two requirements to give me a promotion. (Look of trapped animal) Uh, I can't. Why not? You still have a reputation... Based on what we just showed you for an hour, how much of that rep is valid? Well, very little, but I still can't. Why not? Your rep... So what I'm hearing is that there is no way for me to advance at this company even when we show you proof. Did you ever check with other departments when they complained about me? I don't have time. Really? That's convenient as we just spent several times showing you how the complaints aren't valid than it would have taken you to actually go talk to people when you heard something. Maybe if you did YOUR job, I wouldn't have a rep. (Angrily) Get out. Next day I turned in my resignation. Randy: Oh, I thought you were going to stick it out and fight. I'm a little bit disappointed. Me: Well, know you know how I feel as I'm very disappointed in how crappy a manager you are. Surprisingly not fired on the spot. My team lead, while not a manager, had great sway in the company. After I was done, he entered and chewed Randy out for an hour before quitting time. Like I said... great guy. Randy, red-faced, actually stormed out of his office to go to his car. I made a sarcastic sad face at him and waved bye-bye. Best decision ever for me in my career.

I worked a dish pit for a bar and grill and the only thing I wanted was to learn how to work other jobs in the kitchen aside from dishes. It took them a whole year before I was given the chance to work at another station, but then the floodgates opened to where I was working dishpit, salad/pizza station, grill if they needed it, and Prep work plus sometimes doing the opening work as well. Then, when I started showing initiative by talking to the General Manager about issues in the kitchen and bar, my hours got slashed to less than 15 a week. So, yeah, the whole "Screwed out of a promotion" story is one that happens in every industry, and not even to higher level jobs.

I almost didn’t listen to this one, but I’m glad I did. Unfortunately, this kind of stuff happens all too often. My husband got screwed over again and again at a mom and pop company he worked for for 20 years! Finally they “laid him off” and screwed him on his severance pay. They said they couldn’t afford his large salary (which was tiny) then turned around and hired a guy right out of college for more! The funny part is, the new guy couldn’t do the job and messed the system up. For the next couple of years they would hire my husband as a contractor to fix all the problems the new hires would create. My husband was hired by a big company that paid him twice his salary. He has since changed jobs a couple of more times and is making four times what he was making at the POS company he spent 20 years at. It took me a while but I finally convinced him that no matter how much they paid him to freelance their problems, it wasn’t worth it. I’m so grateful they laid him off. It’s the best thing that ever happened to him.

I worked for a large clothing company here in the UK and was with them for around 7 years. After the 3rd year ( and having done every job within the company that was available ) I was a supervisor for the delivery team and was told by 3 separate managers that the next available managers position ( you had to wait till someone either left or retired to take their position and get the training opportunity ) I was passed over hard by the 3 managers and the position was given to someone that showed no interest in the post prior and didn't even last 8 months in the position before leaving for another job! So when I asked for HIS position they said it was going to another person from another store. I was gob smacked as I had spent so long, doing all the overtime, nightshifts, store counts etc, to be stabbed in the back by the 3 of them! I phoned my uncle who had recently returned from the States and was looking to start his own business, so I quit on the spot and never looked back. I wished there was signs but thats the card I was dealt. I heard that one manager got sacked for "gross misconduct", one took early retirement and the last one had gotten a promotion and left. Fu*k them and fu*k that company.

Oh yeah... been there. My incompetent director skipped over me for promotion. During the recession so I didn't make any waves just let her know I expected to be promoted the next year. In March of the next year she assures me my promotion is all set and budgeted for. Then in July she waits until I'm out of my office chucks my annual review on my desk. Of course I see that there's no promotion. Turns out she fucked up the annual paper work (did I mention she was incompetent), I won't even get into how it went wrong, and she was afraid to tell her boss because she was on thin ice already! Her solution? Just screw me over and act like nothing happened. I immediately put a meeting on her calendar at which I told her I would be doing all I could to leave her department. Luckily it didn't take me long to find something in another department - got a 10k raise! So I guess it worked out after all. 😃

excuse i got for not getting promoted was "i just wanted to see some new faces and talent around here" for the job i was already doing due to lack of a manager in that spot. happened 3 time because they were not trained in that position because i refused to train what would effectively have been my manager and they would inevitably quit. I eventually got fired for "gross misconduct" for something completely unrelated to me because I placed something in the wrong location(previously correct location things had changed when i was out with covid for the 2 weeks and i still had a bit of brain fog going on) and someone else stole said item on a different shift who I had never met or spoken to. not mad about it since another company picked me up pretty fast for my history of work and is paying me twice what i was making previously. honestly a blessing in disguise getting fired and i was already looking for new employment. they are also training me for higher positions due to my high performance for when something becomes available. though they wont say i clearly see the difference of my training vs others in my position and also stating wanting me to apply further in the company in my performance review. i still have my eyes set on something outside this company but its nice to know if it falls through i have options with my current employer.

The job I had before my current one screwed me over. It was virtual security and I was promoted to make maps of sites. My supervisor was a real scum bag and wouldn't let me take lead of the project I had been promoted to do. After an incident right before I was supposed to go on vacation, I was done. I submitted applications on my vacation, got a call just an hour after submitting, got an interview the next day and hired. I waited until my last day of vacation to submit my resignation, putting scum bag as section three and blocked everyone's numbers. My roomie still worked there and said they all started calling him "section three" behind his back. Pretty satisfying.

I worked for a big name in computer security/backup software for years, they divested part of the company that I worked for and the 'new' company closed physical offices in my area. I applied for a particular remote job and got it, and every customer that I had had a nice stable environment and had a direct line to me, however the sales team was so stupid that they comped a year of this elevated service to many new customers. This of course meant that after a year most companies weren't going to pay the extra overhead. Anyway, my wonderful boss got promoted and I got transferred under a new boss, where the rest of the team was at an office location. I was down to 1 or 2 clients, because they just wouldn't send me new clients, but I was also on a team to revamp and rework our certification exam for the software. We completed the revamp of the exams (both internal and external) after getting a raise just a couple weeks before I was "laid off". Yes, I saw the writing on the wall but was willing to ride it out for as long as possible, after all the company already had screwed me over in the transition from the old company, doing it in a way I lost a bunch of reserve stocks.
