The R-Type series from Irem has got to be the best horizontal scrolling shooters of all time. If I counted up all the quarters I put into the original arcade, I might be able to buy a new car! I used to sneak out of the house at about 3 o'clock in the morning, and trek a mile to the 7-11 and play for hours. After some time, my quarters would last much longer. When they added R-Type II, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven! My quarters, unfortunately, dwindled quickly. Luckily for me, there was a nearby truck stop and I could make many quarters in a short time. I brushed my teeth a lot back then...
It's one of my least favorites, but it is undeniably a gem of a series, and I'm saddened that instead of games like these, we just get crappy bullet hells nowadays.
I love the music direction and how it kinda gets darker the further you make it. Great play through, nice quick kills on the bosses, especially stage 4. I hate stage 4 and the boss, but I’m gonna use this video for reference when I start practicing this game

Damn this game looks insane!!!..(I was an avid player of the original Super Rtype when I had the console back in the dayz!)...Damm good game!! THE GRAPHICS & GAMEPLAY kept me watching& on the edge.of my seat lol!!.. So this was really on the super Nintendo aswell?!?

Huh I've noticed slight differences between the NTSC and Japan versions such as the goo jellies that boss 2 shoots looks a lot like sperm, thus its red and has a brain-like texture, a boss theme is missing and the cellular morph boss has different colorations of each form.
One thing that drives me crazy about this series is the lack of an option to slow your ship down. It goes from being way too slow to uncontrollable if you are not really careful.
Been watching all the r-type games before III and I gotta say I love III the best as it's the most darkest of the bunch. Instead of funky beats we got some hard hitting riffs and honestly the sound and boss designs are the darkest I've seen so far. Also the ending where you desperately gotta escape, it feels more tense.
Stage 4 took a lot of repetitions to get fluent at and the boss required good concentration too. Since it's been a long time since I've played this game I wouldn't want to have to relearn it. I made it to the boss rush of stage 5 regularly but was stymied there.
6:06 How the hell is that boss being done? It's almost certainly Mode 7 because of all the rotation and scaling, but there seems to be a lot of animation frames there, and I didn't think Mode 7 could really do that amount of animation frames? I'm also not sure how it can be broken up from one big background into many parts to create the animation yet still rotate and scale and even separate into 3 parts at one point without the rest of the background showing all the frames being visible?
Probably just mode 7 with the stars in the "background" being simple scrolling sprites. Shots from the beginnign of the boss also sprites with multiple scaling and not zoom. But just my guess, since mode 7 is background only, but the dev were clever :)
Now that I think about it, I've never seen anyone use the Cyclone Force before, most LPs of this use the Standard Force, though I watched one today that used the Shadow Force (objectively the best one, fight me)
i never seen the end credits when i first bought this game. wonder why they didn't put in end or staff credits? i get it now. it's in different region. in usa it's different bc 2nd boss instead of shooting out sperms it's shooting out eyeballs instead.
boss design on the R-type series always weirded me out. they're not scary... but sexually suggestive? like, Gommander, the.. flesh put with the worm going in and out. eh... the Eye wall firing sperm'y thingies. idk man too many dots make a line. R-type final even have two people making-out in the final stage background. its just odd.
