R1200GS vs. Ice and Snow - Build and Ride

Riding up a snowy forest track with a 260 kg motorcycle - a 2016 BMW R1200GS Adventure. And that’s happening after having fun on ice. Sounds crazy? Well, it is crazy. We didn’t have enough time to buy some proper tire ice studs, so we built our own. We went to the store, bought some regular bolts and put them to some used tires. We were very curious about how our big and heavy R1200GS Adventure will behave on ice and snow. Here’s the result.

The spikes don't need to be that long, car studs are quite short, they work well on ice but don't add traction in soft snow. Soft snow is, as you say, like sand, so you need wheelspin and momentum. You're a brave man!

I know, I watched it twice, but my question was, did he use glue on the screws, because you know tubes sometimes leak.

FullSpectrum Survivalist Sorry, I didn't see the question. No glue. Nothing but power tape to cover the studs. And they lasted the whole day.

How many nails? a specific type?

We bought around 1,400, but we still have left some nails. So I'd say we used 600/wheel: 4 kg. We picked some regular self-drilling screws with a 25 mm length a 5.5 mm diameter. The tires: some used Heidenau K60 Scout

We'll do it again next winter. But of course, using another bike. Revelations? Hmmm... The grip is better than we expected on ice. But in deep snow.. forget about it. It's a way of having fun, though..
