My BMW R1200 GS is now 10 years old and of course the new R1300 GS is on the scene - how do the two bikes compare and should I upgrade? In this video I compare the two bikes side by side and try to come to some sort of a conclusion....

I would really struggle with the price, my pockets aren't nearly deep enough for that. Prefer the 1200 looks wise, and also feel that with all the extra gadgetry of the new model there's way more (probably exceedingly expensive) senors and doohickies to fail in years to come. Like anything new these days, it'll be wonderful under warranty, but after that, possibly not so much joy. Great video as always. Very slick edititing! 👌🏼

Heard an interview with insurance underwriter yesterday talking about the rise in premiums. He was citing the cost of parts on new vehicles as one element that underwriters have had to reassess and which have contributed to the rise in premiums. He quoted to cost of a BUMPER on one new BMW car as £7000 due to gadgetry and sensors! So, no doubt that the same forumla will be applied to motorcycles

@@AG-ti6cp chatting rubbish. What's in a bumper - parking sensors, a camera and if you're unlucky the radar. It's only £7000 if you're paying yourself £6000 as the insurance company for the trouble of fixing a car.

That intro sequence, flipping between the two bikes, was a brilliant way to start the video! As a fellow video editor, I know how long that must have taken, and how challenging it must have been to film and deliver, so well done for all that effort for what comes across as a short and simple snippet to kick things off! Great insights as ever, and exactly the video a lot of people will have been waiting for, I'm sure. Good job, Andy 👏👍

This was a very well thought out and well put together video. As of now, I still prefer the looks of the 1200/1250 and as I’ve only had mine a very short while, I’m not in a rush to upgrade. But the 1300 is starting to grow on me, the more videos I watch. Thanks, Andy!

I think the styling only appears bad to GS veterans. As a non-GS owner I couldn't care less, the differences are hardly enormous and it wouldn't prevent me considering it - but the stupid price would.

I totally agree, if you look at some of the front ends on some of Yamahas and Kawasakis, it doesn’t seem so bad, does it? But nobody complains? And having owned many BMWs starting with 1975 R90/6, up to a 2013 R1200 GS, I never bought one for it’s looks. But one other thing, as far as shifting goes, my 2009 RT1200 was the most delightful transmission on any bike I’ve owned. And that includes my Yamahas.
@JohannesDalen
@JohannesDalen 5 месяцев назад
Looks are definitely subjective! I think the new one is a huge upgrade over the old one in terms of looks. Differences are massive when you look closely, frame, cockpit, rear-end, list goes on. The price is still nuts, but now at least you can pick the things you want and remove things you don't want, versus having to go with "packages" until now - still too expensive for me though.. Love how a bike can be this divisive. Have a great day 🙂

TMF reviews are always a must watch for me. I find your delivery precise and enjoyable. In Uganda where I live, the new GS could end up costing nearly 50% more than the price listed at the dealerships in the UK and my pockets aren't that deep. But as always, I enjoy learning something new and experiencing these new bikes in some way from your channel. Keep up the amazing work.

There will always be the brainwashed ones and buy it on pcp, new bikes are over priced as are new cars but if you keep giving the dealers money on pcp the prices will keep going up, Here’s a novel thing, still with your old bike which I’m thinking is probably ok and save your money.

I have a 1200GSA 2018 and have a 1300 coming in March following a very enjoyable test ride. I agree with majority of your comments but the overwhelming difference I noticed riding them back to back was the wind protection. My GSA has the standard but much bigger screen than the GS but some work in the wind tunnel has worked miracles. There was 10pct of the buffeting riding the new vs old at slow medium and higher speeds.

Very good comparison, I considered the new GS, went for the RS instead as it was more suited my riding and worked out a good few ££ cheaper. One thing I would like is the radar which the Innov kit will resolve. It would be interesting to see what happens to the second hand values for the 1250/1200/1150 now. ........ when you take bikes like the Kawasaki H2SXSE/ Ducati V4 Multi's they are all going north of £20k+

Nice sum up as always, Andy! Don't think the older GS'es will lose their appear or shine as a result of the coming of the 1300GS. Perhaps the contrary. And, as many would agree, it's seldomly a good idea to buy the first generation of a new model anyway. And we know the old GS can last for almost half an eternity. Proof is in both the pudding and on youtube. I did a wee under 35.000 miles on a 2016 1200GSA over the course of 3 seasons.. More than half of that with a software update package that gave the engine almost the same amount of bhp as a 1250, and almost the same amount of torque. For £360ish that was a cheap, if somewhat fake, 1250 :) Fuel consumption was vastly improved. well if you rode normally. I've no doubt the new GS is a nice bike, but for big/tall blokes like myself the shrinking isn't necessarily an advantage. And as for looks well, the asymmetrical appearance of the old bike never bothered me. A bit like us humans one could say. Handling-wise, anyone who's done a considerable amount of miles on a 1200GS/GSA, or 1250, probably will ask themselves the question if it is worth all the extra cash. I think the used ones will be as popular now, as the generation before them. The question for many people might be whether or not they need all the fancy-schmanzy stuff. Or if they need a new beemer to ride comfortably on long hauls. Having been down through Europe multiple times for the old GS(A) I can't say I think it would matter to me. I've since gone over to the orange side. Late 2024 KTM owners will likely face the same questions. Whether or not the new model(s) are more attractive than the older. Cheers.

I like the concept of this video Andy and maybe a subset of your comparison between the new 1300 and the previous 1200/1250 models should focus on insurance. I’m reading quite a few comments on 1300GS related forums that folks trading up to the new model are either finding their existing insurer declining to quote or applying a significant premium increase
@jeanjacques9980
@jeanjacques9980 5 месяцев назад
Highly interesting and relevant comment in these days of inflation busting insurance increases year on year. A local in Beckenham had their GSA stolen from inside their garage and the garage is part of the house. In the 50s/60s, my parents used to leave the front door unlocked and the car was frequently left unlocked. I feel that theft is probably the highest risk factor for the insurance hikes but cost of spares must be a close second contributory factor. Catalytic exhaust thefts are a problem in area for car owners.

I have loved it since I got it and it provided amazing value for money second hand with a 2 year warranty. Of course if money were no issue a 1300 would be lovely, but until there are a good number of used bikes around, my trusty 12 will serve me well. I may go to the 1250 in between.cheers

I used to own an R1150RT and wow have these newer bikes become much more complicated! One thing not mentioned in this review was luggage. My 'RT came with the standard issue BMW tupperware (er sorry top box and panniers) and those items worked well for everything from shopping trips to solo camping expeditions. I even had a tent that was small enough to fit inside the top box, so I could tour without the need for any soft luggage bungeed on.

Great review as usual. The 1200 is a great bike and the 1250 kept the rugged purposeful looks as you say and the 1250 engine was a step forward. I wonder how we all would have reacted if the 1300 engine was fitted in a 1250 frame with maybe only minor cosmetic alterations and kept the purposeful look ? I like the twin headlights on the Ducati desert X and Ducati have hidden the radar pretty well on the Multistrada, so makes you wonder what the BMW designers were thinking. BMW really need to pull one out of the bag with the GSA !

Yes, I think they do, and had they put this new engine and the radar technology on a bike that looks like the outgoing machine I think they would’ve had a real winner on their hands without so much of this controversy. As my S1000XR was nearing 90 000 kms I was looking for a possible replacement, and i came to the conclusion that a bike with my specs, full set of paniers etc would come in at between 25 and 30 k €. I decided to go for a 2009 full option K1300GT with 23000 kms on the clock for less then 9000. And I kept the XR, so I now have two high end but different bikes in the garage for a lot less monnies. Never have seen a Big GS that weren’t an expensive bike. They always have been costly bikes to get new. The 1300 GS is a big change and by that side maybe it’s hard for the ones who were happy with the 1200 and 1250 GS’s that the model like it used to be is im soon passing behind to a page in history. I can perfectly understand that. At the same time the new 1300 GS is giving the first steps and it’s a different kind of GS. Very composed but not quite finished. It will be refined and perfected with Time. For a Bike that is totally new, it was born with a lot of novelties. Consequently, BMW wants to capitalize all the new things that are now offered. The fans of the old model will take some time to adapt, but I believe they will end up coming around, sooner or later. The different question to know is if this new Bike will gather a big interest from new comers to the Brand and this new version of GS. That’s what we don’t know yet. I used to love the 1250 , but this 1300 GS is even easier to like, due to all the things it ads to the riding experience, which in my opinion it’s a lot. I don’t need to wait for the GSA , because for my longer trips I prefer the BMW 1250 RT. The 1300 GS is spot on 👌🏻 Thanks, the comparing video is awesome!

My point is that I will not be upgrading just to upgrade, the 1300 hasn’t make me go weak at the knees with desire, for which I am both pleased and sad, but hey no at least I save money, for now! Another great review 😀👍🏼 looks are very much in the eye of the beholder, I like the looks and styling, BMW had no choice but to change the light design due to EU roles. Taking inflation into account your old 1200 would be around £19k so given the level of kit, refinement, performance etc I say it was worth the money 🙂

It’s more about the ugly BMW interpretation of the new EU regs, it will be interesting to see if other manufacturers go down the ‘X’ road, I doubt it. Very helpful review, the price of the new GSA will make eyes water and painfully effect the lower anatomy. I assume most will purchase on finance contract and not feel the pain of parting with £25+K! Great summary at the end.

@MH-xd2nd
@MH-xd2nd 5 месяцев назад
Nice side by side comparison Andy - very slick. It’s pretty clear that virtually no reviews I’ve seen have much if anything negative to say about it, and even setting aside the smoke and mirrors over the actual weight reduction, like for like, it’s clearly a better, faster and more agile bike than either the 1250 or the 1200. But at what price? When talking about price inflation is meaningless. Wage growth over the last 10 years has been the slowest since records began, so it’s not the amount today of your 1200GS with inflation that matters, it’s the absolute cost, and that means in real terms that the 1300 is much, much more expensive for the average buyer. If I had 20K I’d be much happier spending it on two or even three very good polar opposite bikes that would be more fulfilling and more fun. Then, what’s the most stolen big bike in the UK? Yes, you guessed it! So forget parking it in any UK town overnight and good luck with insurance without a tracker, garage, the right post code and a willing broker. I also realised over many years of big GS ownership (it took long enough, blame BMW marketing and cheap finance) that I don’t like the boxer engine. It sounds awful, chugs along and never feels exciting or engaging, no matter how fast you are going, and no amount of polishing will take away its basic character. Give me an IL4 screamer any day! And finally, I don’t care how good a bike is - it has to look good. Yeah you can’t see the front end when you’re riding but you will every single time you get off and walk away and you will every time you go into your garage. There are so many better looking bikes out there with 99% of features and fun at a much lower price - even within the GS range. So price, engine character and looks mean a big fat no from me.

Nice one Andy, very interesting video 👍Having had 3 GS' I've jumped ship to a 1250RS. Each time I bought my 2 1200s and the 1250 GS the cost between similar R's, RS's and GS's was prity evenly spread out with the R being the cheapest, the RS in the middle and the GS the most expensive. That still applies with the price gap between the R and RS similar to what it's always been, but even the cost of the outgoing 1250GS increased far more than the other 2 and the 1300 now makes the gap even bigger. As an example the 22.5k you quote for a spangled up GS is 6.5k more than a new 1250RS SE with loads of options. I'm sure it'll sell well, but to achieve the same or better sales volumes it'll need to attract new converts as I'm sure I won't be the only current 1200/1250 GS owner who rules the new 1300 out on cost alone for those buying one outright and the current interest rates won't be doing it any favours for the PCP brigade either.

I have to say many if the improvements you cite for the 1300 is what I felt in my 15 GS when I first got it! While I certainly think the new one would be better still, I can't fault the performance of the old one enough to displace it. It does everything well, has creature comforts (including the auto-preload suspension you mentioned on the 1300) that I can't see reason enough to change.

Great vid! Have had several big GS's, and my last bike was a Multistrada V4s. Tried a 1300 GS demo, and must say: I consider the Multistrada V4s just as electronically advanced as the 1300, and Ducati managed to have a dedicated button for heated grips. BMW should be able to as well. The Multi doesn't have an el.windshield, but with the ease of adjustment it offers, it doesn't need one. All it takes is one finger for one second at any speed, and you have the windshield exactly where you want it. Preferably, instead of using the menu for adjustment on the GS. Also, i don't understand why BMW would not give us the opportunity of adjusting preload manually. Again, you can set the Multistrada in Auto and forget about it, or you can play with it manually and choose between 24 settings. This, along with 5 different suspension modes, gives you a wide range of settings to choose from. The quickshifter is also in another league on the Multistrada, especially on the Rally. I'm 6 ft. 4", and after riding the demo bike, i quickly decided i will wait for the Adventure model. I have no worries, it will be a great bike. 😊

This was a wonderful review, not only for the detailed, side-by-side comparison, but also from the aspect of those of us who are well familiarized with the GS variants. The quality of your point of view videography and audio allow us to hear and get a sense of the feeling of riding the bikes. Given the nearly ten year gap, it’s interesting that the roll-on sound and cruising sound of the 1300 are immediately recognizable as those of a typical GS. The outward appearance of a redesign was bound to split opinion (which is probably a good thing from a marketing standpoint, since it generates buzz and over excited controversy). I actually like the new lights, especially when viewed at night, and I think I would completely forget about the radar panels, as I have on my Multistradas.

Nice comparison this is what existing GS owners have been waiting for. The decision to go with a new bike vs an evolution of the previous version must have been a tough decision and the responsibility of the design team huge. Personally I think they have pulled it off, I like the looks and have had a ride and think it’s superb and don’t understand some of the negativity.

Great video. I’ve yet to see the new bike in person, but from everything I have seen, I completely agree with you on the looks. Also, the functions that are hidden behind menus in the TFT is a big turnoff. I love being able to adjust my suspension as well as turn on/off heated grips at the press of a button. I’m leery of the various new electric bits: motorized windscreen, center stand, luggage locks, radars and blind spot detection… more things to fail, and everything will be that much more expensive to fix/replace when they do.

Great video as always Andy. You're right though, the new 1300 is awesome but the price tag is a stretch when you look at an older model, which I guess will be the case with most new bikes/cars. The looks are divisive from the front but, overall, I could cope with that for the extra performance etc.

Superb vid! Love how you edited it to give a real side-by-side comparison feel - really clever, and I hope others appreciate this! Totally agree as regards the looks. Very well done comparison. Thanks Andy. I ride an R1250RS and I'm curious what the 1300 version will be like. I'd actually consider moving to an 1300GS for comfort, but there is the question of price. I think BMW made two mistakes though. Moving the keyless on/off switch to the bars means less space for buttons I'll use while riding. Having it in the typical, middle position worked just fine. Also, I don't like the idea of no traditional rear light. This strikes me as a big mistake from a safety perspective and I hope the aftermarket comes out with one that can be added. The HEX EZcan has functionality to control an extra brake light so this should be doable.

Still the benchmark bike. The “X” light is just as unique as when BMW came out with the sideways “8” . Love all the technology with the new bike, the increased agility, a little weight loss, and I know the quick shifter issues I live with were mostly resolved on the 1250. A very effective way to make a comparison…. I like it 😃👍 I like the way the light and radar look…..think I prefer it to the radar on my multi, but as we discussed the other day, I wish the colour options were better. I think it’ll look amazing in the red/white/blue HP set up. I did find the 1200 and 1250 a bit lacking, for example on a long hill, two up, and trying to overtake, say from 70 to 85. The reason I bought the multi v4 is that it didn’t even feel the extra weight on a long/steep hill at cruising speeds….. I’m talking about the long uphill runs you get on the continental autoroutes etc. I’m guess the 1300 will fix that.

I think you should also mention the cruse control blob at the back is only if you option the £700+ package with the blind spot. If you don't have that then it also looks like the screen at the front covers that plate more so the looks with the screen down are improved. Also if updating with a full set of luggage it's another £1300 for the new vario ones with power (which also are a bit divisive in looks) as the old ones wont fit, another saving going to a late 1250.
