In this video we share how to prevent heat stroke and how to treat a rabbit if you see it suffering for too much heat. Signs to look out for are heavy breathing with it's mouth open and head tilted back. Soaked saliva or foaming at the mouth. If you see this take immediate action to cool your rabbit down.

We raise TAMUKs here in East Texas and so far haven’t lost any to the heat. This week the highs are over 100 degrees with extreme heat indexes. I don’t usually provide frozen bottles unless it gets over 100 degrees. We are looking into setting up solar fans. I breed for large ears which is such a bonus with these rabbits.

That's impressive. How's the fertility. Do your numbers go down or do you take the summer off for breeding? Our frozen bottle temp is 90's. It's rare to see 100F in Michigan. Thanks for commenting!

I have 100s here in georgia. I just had my first litter from two small mutt rabbits, I was breeding for size but going for ear size is a great idea!! The dad has much larger ears than the mom. Thank you so much for the idea!!!

@@TheRabbitryCenter we have litters that are 11 days old and are continuing to breed throughout the summer. From 4-4.5 months old our breeders are bred year round.

I had a heat casualty this summer (my first summer w rabbits) in the mild cool mountains of Pa. He flipped his 2 water dishes and the wind blew his roof off. He was in the sun less than an hour in 85 degs and it did him in. He was a great buck with great temperament and awesome fur pattern. Luckily bred a doe the week before and one the kits looks very similar to him. Lesson learned. Strap the water down and strap the roof down.

I had a casualty on my favorite hen who laid the largest eggs, everyday, even when she was injured in a dog attack a couple months ago...Only to die in her nesting box (after laying her last egg) from heat stroke.

Bobby, I live in Thailand. Just got a Dutch buck and a Rex doe. Temperatures in the cool season averages 32 degrees C (40C in hot season). At night, with fans, I can get it to just about 29 C. They get ice bottles too quite a lot. Am I sh1t out of luck for breeding? I read that they go sterile temporarily after 5 days over 28C. Thanks.

Great video, I took a 30 in barrel fan and ran patio misters around the front. When you run it on high it cools down all my cages. I tilt it a little and it circulates the air and rabbits don't get wet. It drops the temperature about 15 degrees. I don't know if it would work in really high humidity tho.

I live about 70 miles north of you and bring all my rabbits in the airconditioned shop when the temp goes over 80. I love my rex rabbits but am I hurting them by bringing them inside once in a while I have had some start sneezing.

Bringing the rabbits inside isn’t necessary unless the temperatures rise above 95 Rex rabbits do really well in temps in The 80’s and cold weather down to -10F Usually this can just be remedied with a ice bottle Moving rabbits will make it harder on them to self calibrate there body temperature. It’s a good idea to watch them when the temps reach 90s but they still can do very well with a little help from Marble tile, frozen bottles, solar fans and cooling totes. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for all of the info! Do you have a video on all of the veggies and fruits you can feed your rabbits? I've heard they can get sick if they eat too much fresh stuff. Is this a myth?

No not a myth Rabbits can get bad gas from too much broccoli or cauliflower and over feeding(not to mention sore hocks from heavy rabbits). Thats something you really need to try not to do. We all want to spoil our rabbits but folks often do more damage than good. I personally stick to pellet hay and fresh water I feed greens like dandelions clover. I give them things to chew on like weeping willow, apple tree branches crab apple tree branches once in a while I’ll give them some banana peels a tablespoon of banana or an apple slice here and there frozen strawberries and my rabbits stay healthy. I noticed you have small individual fans set up just outside the cages. Do you have a video where you talk about these at all? I'm trying to find a good option for using fans with our setup which is somewhat eclectic, in a constricted space that limits options for cage positions. Our summers often give us sustained temps between 93F and 104F. Sometimes a little higher again, at which point we're usually making a rabbit hotel inside for everyone until the heat wave passes. That's pretty labour intensive. It's hard to arrange our hutches/cages in a way that allows for using just one or two large fans to effectively cover all the hutches. But small individual ones, maybe that could be an answer for us. I'd love to hear your thoughts, and advice about this methodology! Kind regards, Marion (Victoria, Australia)

Is there any particular traits in rabbits that help tolerate the heat better? I know generally short hair and larger ears are good.

There are some small benefits but no real game changers- white rabbits will do better reflecting heat than a darker colored rabbit -that said, regardless of color, fur length or ear size all Rabbits are unable to sweat and summertime heat will always be something you’ll need to be cautious of. Rest assured that Domesticated rabbits are offspring from those that tolerated the heat in your area but all rabbits are covered in fur and regardless of being bred for heat tolerance will still need some summer time cool down remedies Incorporated to keep them fertile and productive.

Off subject question: how do you determine if one of your brokens is a Charly? I use fans and frozen bottles as well.

When you breed two broken rabbits your off spring will carry two broken genes and in most cases won’t have a lot of broken patterns on it. You can usually see that it has a Charlie Chaplin mustache(not always). They could just have a little stripe down their back or just very little broken patterns but if you breed this rabbit with a solid colored rabbit the off spring will have good broken patterns. Fans and bottles work so well. your rabbits are lucky to have you.

Whidbey Island WA. The town of Langley has a European rabbits population that have been feral for about 30 years and I have often wondered if over that time they could have developed some immunities to the common rabbit health problems. Do you think it could be worth while to capture one or two add some hardiness to the more common rabbit breeds, or have you heard of anyone experimenting with feral European rabbits? @@TheRabbitryCenter Maybe I used the wrong term(European), the escaped domesticated rabbits have been living on their own with out any medical or other support for many generations and so possibly have developed resistance to common rabbit health problems. They appear healthy, and are of course very hardy.

Since the beginning, Ive been Seeking only healthy rabbits with no vaccines in mind and culling those susceptible to disease, The New Zealand’s and Californian Rabbits that we breed are hardy in general and Heat tolerant and most importantly free of any health problems.

@@TheRabbitryCenter I became interested in hardy rabbits because of a report that at Polyface Farm they had been raising rabbits with out the usual medical supports and that the cull rate was very high for many years. A feral rabbit colony seems like a kind of short cut that could save many years if that was the goal. I use frozen bottles in my rabbit cages but they like to chew on them. They have ‘chew toys’ but seem to prefer the bottles. How bad is that for their teeth and digestive system l?

They're most likely chewing it and not ingesting it. Rabbits are chewing machines and will chew on the hide box, the resting board as well as small pieces of untreated 2x4. any softwood will be good for their teeth. Try your best to make sure they're water is full - rabbits chew even more when they're thirsty.

Hello, I asked a lot and no one gave me an exact answer whether I can let the father to the daughter for little bunnies. Some people said maybe others not, what to do.

Short answer : For one litter now because you need meat in the freezer? That is fine. Longer answer : There always will be 2 camps when it comes to inbreeding/linebreeding. Both have good reasons for and good reasons against. So start by deciding your breeding goals and what new breeding stock you have access too in your area (or not). From there decide what you want long term in regards to buying new animals yes/no. What do you have now in numbers and how they are related. And how many years/generations of rabbitbreeding do you plan for? If you are say 20 and want to do this until say mid 80, you'll need more genetic spread to start on than if you are 60+ and want to have some meat, etc. for whatever time you have left. I.e. start by making a long term breeding plan, include what you expect income and access to new blood wise and then decide what fits your timeframe. For me personally, not breeding myself into a corner due to no access to new and to closely related makes inbreeding an absolute nono right now. I don't know enough about my breeding animals yet and have too few to be able to cull if needed esp. with a small number and thus narrow genetics base. Do note that not all animals will give both sexes, know what your combo's give or you'll end up without one or the other.

Your rabbits won’t chew the water bottles but they’ll chew plastic water bowls if you don’t keep them filled with water.

Hello I have a teenage rabbit, I'm gonna get him a girlfriend in a few weeks, my idea is to get another male later and more girls, I'm anxious to get the experience of harvesting one. So I was thinking about killing this teenage one after the girl is pregnant but I'm not sure if that would be any good for the babies Could I do it during gestation or should I wait for the kids to grow and handle themselves?

I wouldn’t recommend breeding your doe before six months. I would keep your buck and doe in separate cages except on breeding day bring the doe to the bucks cage. I wouldn’t harvest my buck until I had another one of breeding age.

The sunshine state is hot stuff! I stayed down in Florida for one summer about 25 years ago. It was a hot one!
