@@MrGrazzhoppa been to quite a few calls where animals get into fermenting fruit/grain and become intoxicated. The symptoms can vary in severity and can present as other diseases/disorders. In the case of raccoons… you can absolutely quarantine the animal and wait to see if there is recovery. The most common route is euthanasia for raccoon.
Raccoons get a parasite from eating garbage that basically destroys their brains and they will do things like walk around in circles like they're chasing their tails or just lay down and wait to die. It is extremely sad.
Freeze a small amount of Frenchs mustard in a ice tray crumble it in with some food scraps so they eat it several meals with the mustard gets rid of distemper like in horses .
@@lc4life369 Rabies and distemper can look very similar symptomatically. Animals with head injuries (often from car impacts) will also often run in a circle. Poisoning can also sometimes result in similar symptoms. A head injury could be determined by examination but for the rest the only way to tell for sure is by testing in a lab.
@@jacewilber9201 same i wouldnt be close to that animal, whenever a wild animal lets you get that close to it then they usually have rabies or pretty sick
@@jacewilber9201 you gotta realize he's a creature just like the rest and when they do go through trash or get diseases which btw most of the time is from trash digging it's so that they or their babies can survive so how would u basically while u were trying to find food get walked up on and get shot in the fuckin cranium
It more than likely was. Even if it was actually distemper or the feline disease, that thing was checking out. I recently had a run in with one that was not so close to death. You guys are lucky.
I raised coons from babies 👶 💕 because people (humans) are stupid and naive... leave them be. And yeah if you are ignorant and THINK you are going to make a friend, perhaps 🤔, but you are NOT using the brain GOD gave you properly and as was said, YOU WILL look like you fought a running circular saw! 😉 Now as for me I can tell you that YES a Raccoon can make an adorable and loving pet 🥰 I have done it. BUT YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND God gave you a brain for more than just running the organs in your body; Coons have NOT become domestic pets for a reason. That is that they All have DIFFERENT PERSONALITIES and various temperaments. Raising a coon baby where YOU are all they know as a parent, provider, and protector, WILL TURN ON YOU "PRESUMABLY" for no reason. I'll tell you, even as a loving pet 1min emotionally they will think something, or feel something and lash out on you, because we don't know what they may be thinking from one moment to the next. My beloved Squiggles had bit me at least 5 times within a year. Once just because he got jealous of me petting his brother whom he lived his entire life with because HE wanted my affection totally at that moment. Soooo much more I can say about COONS... but Soooo many are needlessly "MURDERED" because of naivety and strait up cruelty and fear FROM STUPID HUMANS. Sometimes yes they NEED to be put down, but just like you would if they were your pet dog 🐶, they needed the suffering to end. Humanly, NOT OUT OF FEAR, IGNORANCE, OR CRUELTY. MANY HUMANS are cruel, afraid, & BARBARIC. PEACE OUT, and love y'all ❤️✌️😉.
Call the local game and fish office and let them deal with it so they know if there’s a disease coming into the area. That’s info they always need to know asap
Some nocturnal animals, like raccoons, are often out during the day. Not an indication of illness. However, this one? This one is in a bad way and he should've let it be.
@Mys Tery I'd burn the gloves or anything that had possible contact to avoid getting pets sick. I'm not sure of transmission of all diseases that may be possible here though, and medical help isn't the worst idea one could have
This is a common misconception concerning racoons, that if they are seem out in the daytime it automatically means it is infected with the Rabies virus. This is not true, and continuing to spread this false information leads to many innocent racoons, and other "nocturnal" animals, being needlessly killed. All animals have a place in our ecosystem, and the killing of any animal because of ignorance is not okay at all. Mother raccoons with baby kits come out during the day to forage and eat before staying in at night with their babies to protect them from the predators lurking at night such as the male raccoon. In the dark, it's harder to see, so it makes it harder to keep all their kits safe so they come out during the day, and when the kits begin to grow up, the mother will start bringing them outside in the daytime to teach them how to forage, fish, how to open river clams with rocks, and how to protect themselves from other animals that may want to hurt them. Young male racoons continue to stay in and out awake during the day, and sleep at night for a few years even after leaving the family consisting of grandmothers, daughters, and granddaughters, and the baby male racoons stay with their family for up to three years before setting off on their own. So when you hear an animal is nocturnal, take that as not a dead set rule for each individual of that species. Any nocturnal animals, who are physically able to be out during the day, can be seen out during the day without it automatically meaning that they are rabid, or sick. If they are rabid there will be signs and symptoms you couldn't attribute to any other illness. Also, another animal that gets a bad rsp for being put during the daytime is is opossum. They are generally considered nocturnal, though they can get be seen out in the daytime also. No opossum you see in the daytime will not have rabies because they have a natural immunity to the disease. So when you see one bare their eeth, and hiss at you when you find yourself in front of one taking the trash outside, don't worry that they have rabies. Also they eat ticks, and lots of them. They are also immune to many tick-borne diseases such as Lyme and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. So pass the information along to educate others on the wildlife we share the outdoors with, and even sometimes the indoors as well.
I’ve found a raccoon like this that fell from a really tall tree and bounced. He laid there for like an hour trying to get his head right. I thought he had brain damage but after some time he just walked off lol
Something was obviously wrong with the animal was wrong if you read other people's comments he could have been so lethargic. Why couldn't you have at least put him in a box just on the off-chance that he could have been saved I don't know for sure but the impression by the your end of the video was you were just going to leave it there to die. You took the time and effort to go see if it was alright but then stopped Midway. I don't understand?
As a cop, I received numerous calls regarding rabid raccoons. Talking with a local vet who told me that rabies is quite rare in Minnesota. He went on to say the animal likely suffered from distemper. They exhibited foaming at the mouth, unusual body movements swing back and forth, and not being able to walk straight. Either way most times, the animal was dispatched.
Interesting. I called animal control to check on a raccoon that fell from a tree in the back yard. He was moving around as if he was having a seizure. It was making all kinds of noise. Anyhow they came by to look at him & brought a rifle. I thought they would shoot him, no question about it. But they used a stick with a noose on the end to catch him. He didn't put up a fight. Animal control let him go, didn't even remove him from my yard. I haven't seen him since.
I had pet raccoon back in 70's. Farmer found 4 babies on road beside dead mom,we had no animal sanctuaries in area, were unfamiliar with such. Farmer found homes for all,we got a male we named Mo,was great pet used kitty litter with our cats, slept on our beds, went in and out with cats in daytime. Loved to cuddle
They might be drunk. A lot of animals have a slower digestive system than humans. It happens yo gorillas in the wild every morning, after having spent the full previous day snaking on highly sweet plants.
Looks like rabies. Possibly poisoning but the chances of rabies is high enough to not chance contracting rabies via transmission by touch, contagious by entering a cut in the man’s skin or via a scratch or a bite from the raccoon. Never handle a sick raccoon, skunk, frequently positive for rabies.
My guess is Distemper. I found a baby that I kept for the night, animal control came and took it in the morning and we both agreed it wasn't suffering from rabies but distemper
I think you're right. I found one like this years ago and called animal control. The officer said that it was distemper. Since then I've seen a few others with it.
@@dajw7540 Could be either, end stage rabies, distemper or it could be hammered on some fermented deer corn or some other intoxicant. Being a wildlife lover and the fact that I feed more than a dozen local coons I personally would put it in an animal crate and feed, water and observe it for a day or two to see if it is intoxicated. If it came around and acted normal for a day then I would simply take it back to where it was and release it. If it died then I would properly dispose of it. If it got sicker than I would dispatch and dispose of it. If it’s sick either way you don’t want other local animals or humans coming in contact with it especially foxes and coyotes and especially if it is rabies.
No it's actually probably close to death because of rabies raccoons are nocturnal or diurnal meaning they'd rather be in a tree sleeping during the day.
Anytime you see a racoon like this... there is something definitely wrong! & it needs to be put out of it's misery & buried. To avoid others possibly being exposed to diphtheria, distemper or rabies. This is "NOT" normal behavior
@@mastermindenterpriseslimit7555 yeah, sticking his face right in it for a few.... if you haven't seen one of those animals attack,, you going to be in for the surprise of your goddamn Life......stop doing that! Like cobra or rattlesnake.....take your face off....move like bear!! ÀRE YOU GETTING THIS?!!!
The last thing you want to do is just LEAVE it there. If you leave it behind, and it was actually Rabid, the Rabies will spread through carnivores eating it. If you take it home, quarantine it in a travel carrier or outdoor kennel, for Ten (10) days. Put a bit of food/water in with it, and watch to see if they eat it drink. If any food or water is consumed, the likelihood of it being Rabies is unlikely. However, don't let that fool you into a false positive. A very sick animal may not be able to eat or drink, out of weakness. So, if you're a Caring person, and the Animal is not showing aggression, force feed/water it. Doing this for a period of time, say up to a week, will Definitely give you an indication of it being infected or not. NOTE: Learn the Signs and Stages of Rabies! And FYI, the ONLY good you'll get from wearing gloves, is that you won't be touching it's body. A Raccoon will -not Can but WILL shred your hands regardless of what you're wearing.
Or the common round worm they carry got to its brain. They act drunk when it first hits and usually are stumbling around more in daylight. I'm not saying that's what it is because I'm not there seeing what you see, but it's common and very possible. I've trapped hundreds.
@@redbirdlandandcattle that’s probably for the best. Although I am reading that some people say they eat fermented corn and grain and it makes them drunk. So I am wondering if he isn’t potentially just hammered. In which case I would happily let him sleep it off. I would need to see some sort of evidence for it though. Otherwise I would rather just put him out of his misery snd avoid him killing somebody’s pet.
I found a squirrel in the same condition. I stood him up and he just fell over. Went back to check on him a few hours later and he was gone. He was like a zombie.
If you want to go get Hands-On with sick wild animals go right ahead dude but for the majority of the world we aren't equipped with the right tools or knowledge in animal biology to even begin to help in a positive way and a lot of times when called in these animals are put out of their misery
Oh please don't leave that raccoon please Don't feed and water tell please call someone to come and get the raccoon tell them the raccoon is sick I guarantee you that raccoon is sick what if young children find the raccoon and want to handle it do you want that on your conscience I don't know that man that picked it up by the scruff of its neck the doctor might tell him he has to take treatment just in case because what if he touches something is going to eat puts his hand on his mouth or hie eye or has a scratch on his hand that he touch the raccoons and he catches the disease I'm not kidding they will give you treatments if you're in contact with rabies oh I'm getting upset because so many people don't seem to know what to do with a raccoon like that dangerous that is if it comes around I'm done just look it up touch that raccoon I pray you don't have to take treatment but you better let the doctor know you came in contact with one of your hands on it he could even call the hospital and ask him does he need to do anything about touching a sick Raccoon on find out today sir a torch today before it is too late for treatment
Doesn't look like rabies at any stage to me. That doesn't mean it isn't. Injured, potentially drunk as others have stated from eating fermented foods. Many nasty illnesses. Distemper has been bad in some areas. Rabies is ALWAYS a possibility with wildlife, so don't just go poking it and touching it. If he'd just been in a deep sleep, a raccoon that size can react in fear VERY fast, and do you pretty decent damage. Call him in or leave him alone.
Wouldn’t trust it. If you think it’s sick and didn’t notice something like being stuck in a trap put him out of his misery. He’s clearly not starved and if he’s sick he can give it to you. He has no reaction at all, if you don’t do something he’ll die of malnutrition or some other predator will put him out of his misery and catch whatever he has. I know people don’t like hearing it, but put him down and bury him.
