On the 4th night of my Grand River solo canoe trip I had a problem with a racoon who figured out how to open my plastic food barrel. In this video I share my raw footage from this encounter, but also demonstrate a simple measure which can be taken to stop racoons from getting inside.

Chris then locks his barrel and then the following night you hear a french speaking racoon say "Click out of 1, 2 is binding.... goood click, 3 is in a false gate..."

That raccoon was not going to give up lol! Reminds me of the squirrel that came to our campsite on our bike trip. I left a comment about food barrels on your last video, so I won't repeat it here.

I just read your account of the squirrel on your trip. I've never seen one do that!

@@cjhoyle It was the boldest squirrel that I've ever come across. I would have to guess that it has been fed before at that campsite, and now it unfortunately is very bold and somewhat tame. We stood at the table and it still tried to get on top of it, and if we walked just a few feet away, it was on the table. The food was all in one spot on the table, kept in bags except what we were eating. I kept chasing it away and it would come back. It was rather annoying because while the food was out that morning, someone had to constantly stand at the table on the lookout and couldn't do anything else. We had hung the food in a tree the night before because there are bears around, and other animals. We only had a dry bag to use, I don't have a barrel yet, but nothing tried to get into the bag that night. Then as soon as we opened the bag in the morning the squirrel showed up lol!

One word from CJ and the racoon does as it likes!

Haha, it definitely didn't seem to be afraid of the sound of my voice.

I'm glad you only had the one visitor. Camping in Gatineau several years ago, I was visited by many of them with their eyes glowing in the dark. When I accidentally rattled some glass bottles together, they really didn't like that and began hissing. Very unsettling

yikes, I know I wouldn't have enjoyed that experience! Shouting at this one (as loud as I possibly could) seemed to have little to no impact on it. I had better success with clapping my hands, but in the future I'll try to find the loudest two objects that I can bang together.

Thank you for this video -- it is amazing (to me) to see how smart animals are in regards to humans: the raccoon kept looking at you when you were trying to scare it off, and it knew that as long as "you were over there" it had nothing to fear. They learn that humans are slow and clumsy, and realize they can outrun you if you do get up and move toward them, so usually will just keep an eye on you and continue doing what they were doing (foraging your food), until you actually get up and chase them off -- but then they just wait for you to go back to sleep and return later, ha-ha. Putting some sort of small device, like a lock, in that slot of the metal clamp will keep the raccoon from opening it -- just be sure to use something that cannot be opened by hand without a key, etc. -- for example anything you can manipulate with your hands/fingers to open (such as a carabiner) can also be manipulated/opened by the raccoon...they are very clever about solving puzzles and figuring out how to open things, and their front paws/hands are very good at handling things. Thank you again for the entertaining video -- I enjoyed watching the antics of the raccoon -- but I know having your food foraged by critters is not so enjoyable.

I'm sure I'm not the first person this raccoon had interacted with. I do wonder though if it would have been more afraid of me if I had stood up, rather than just poking my head out of the tent. The suitcase lock that I briefly showed in the video ended up being the perfect size to fit onto the metal eyelet, so I'll be using that next time.

CJ I suspect that the raccoon only understands French. Ha just joking, yeah raccoons are very smart specially knowing that he had gotten a loaf of bread very easily he was going back for seconds.

haha ya for sure. In retrospect I think it may have been more afraid of me if I had stood up, instead of just poking my head outside the tent.

Oh my, Ive had 3 bad experiences with racoons. Last time, it got to my snack bag and ate 2 Clif bars, 2 energy chews, and took a bite on 4 fruit strips. It tried my MRE but didnt like it and left it but rendered it inedible. I hope it died of a heart attack from all that boost! LOL

@@cjhoyle 🤔 Hmmmm....I guess Bolt Cutters would be too heavy for em'. 🤨It's those opposing thumbs that are the root of all mischief when it comes to Racoons 🧐!!! (Might wanna' invest in a pellet gun!) 🐺🔫

Is the barrel bear proof lol!
@cjhoyle
@cjhoyle 2 года назад
The only claim they make is that it's water-proof and 'critter-proof'. I'm not sure bears can really be classified as 'critters'.

In previous videos I remember you hanging stuff from a tree limb. Do you think that would work in this case? Thanks for the videos 🤗
@cjhoyle
@cjhoyle 2 года назад
Yes, I think that would help, although the barrel with all my food was pretty heavy. Finding a suitable branch might be tricky at some campsites. I'm hoping that using a lock will be the solution.
