So I've been trying to figure out a way to include the MIDI data with these videos without doing the exact same thing everyone does, and I think this is a cool start. Something different to look at that isn't a black background. There are still some little errors/tweaks that need to be fixed but I'm happy enough with this to upload. This probably means I need to move my keyboard and mouse out of the shots moving ahead.
Full disclosure: I was planning on uploading this piece only when I had gotten decently far with it and had a flawless performance down, as I plan on learning through the entire second half of this cadenza as well. But I got a good take out of it, it worked very well for the MIDI data, and I figured I'd make a video to show my progress seeing as it's been a while since posted anyway. With the addition of the MIDI workflow, these videos get considerably more difficult to make, so I'll likely reduce the upload schedule to once a week moving forward. Gives me more time to practice anyway.
I 've essentially memorized the entire first half of the cadenza at this point. Presto is getting better. There are still sections tripping me up and admittedly I wasn't warmed up for this but it felt decent so I went for a take on it. I think there are better fingerings to be had for certain sections here (namely the very end with the arpeggios, I think the left hand could do double duty because the hard stretch for the pinky in the right hand is uncomfortable as hell and exacerbating what feels like a lateral tendon issue every time I try to stretch for it).
Additionally, practicing this piece as much as I've been doing for the last few months is definitely.... painful, at least at full tilt. It's awkward, there are extremely dense textures (10 notes at a time for the most part in the chordal section) so I'm looking forward to making it to the dolce, as it'll be a nice change of pace I think compared to the bombastic parts.
Anyway, we'll call this....a good start. I need to get the notes completely down and then really start working on interpretation. I like certain sections of certain performers (much inspiration taken from Matsuev's extremely quiet, moody opening) but I also want to put my own flavor on it and not just copy someone else's performances. The ultimate goal is be to upload a version of this that is entirely my own.
I did completely memorize this entire cadenza before my 30th birthday. That was a life goal. Per my annotations on the score, I started working on it on March 9th. I'm not a great sight-reader.
