Wow. I always thought she was originally a Northampton, Massachusetts local but didn’t know she was a Castro Valley High School graduate. I used to run into her every morning in downtown Northampton when she worked for WRSI The River, before she left for Air America. Later on I got to know who she really was when she hosted Northampton’s Pride Parade and ceremony. Fun times, and it’s nice to see her revisit the city from time to time. Thanks for posting this.
Oh to have had that level of self-confidence and civic awareness at that age ... what a gift! Even then, her sense of humor and empathy were apparent, as was her sense of responsibility and her desire to engage people in creating their future. I can only repeat, "What a gift!" *¬◊

It reminded me of my June 1970 HS graduation at which the valedictorian presciently called for the impeachment of Richard Nixon for the illegal bombing of Cambodia. It's just amazing how some 18-year-olds tower intellectually and philosophically over their teachers.... And I'm a teacher.
If you listen closely at the end as she is walking away, you can hear someone saying that "she is going to do something with her life...she's going to make a difference". Of course I paraphrased the comment, but it was so prescient.
Looking at this video, something outside the context makes me laugh as hard as anything else: when she made that speech, Glenn Beck was a morning radio shock-jock. And both ended more or less in the same place...
I like Rachel Maddow a lot, but I have a hard time believing that that outspoken young woman of 1990 would ever have wanted to turn herself into a cheerleader for U.S. troops the way Rachel has done today.
