Legendary trail runner turned race organiser Nicky Spinks brings back this Scottish classic hill race. Set in the Galloway Forest Park, the loop covers 46 miles, over 4500 meters of elevation, across 25 mountain summits including the highest in the Southern Uplands of Scotland, The Merrick.
Teams of 4 are required to self navigate the route using just map and compass, ticking off the 20 checkpoints in order. This really was one of the most challenging events I've taken part in. A lot of which was due the intense storm bringing gale force winds and heavy rain. The other difficulty was that the race starts in the late afternoon, meaning a large section must be ran through the night with 10 hours of darkness.

Looks a great event. Wonderful team effort to get round. I was on the Lakes Traverse that weekend, so can fully appreciate the conditions! Well done to all.

I use a Garmin Fenix 6X. Battery life brilliant! Although I wasn't using maps on this run, I just finished an ultra at the weekend, had maps running the whole time and still had 60% battery after 12 hours!

Ooft mate. What a challenge that was, from navigation to the ascent to the horrendous weather. Superb 👏👏

Ah cheers man! Yeah navigation ain't my strong point! Bit used to just following the line on the watch!! 😂 You got any more big runs this year?

Nothing huge mate. GB Ultra Scotland 50 in a few days then Cowshed Backyard in September. Small matter of the Euros sandwiched in between 😄

What a cool idea. Reminds me of the orientation-runs in military.

Yeah it really puts navigational skills to the test! Or in my case, highlights just how bad my navigational skills are!! 😂
