Good video but I'll just add... Toe you don't need to adjust that much. And you possibly should mention that if out have too much toe out on the front than the car will start to wander under breaking. Also that you should never use negative toe out on the rear. I personally hardly ever touch this setting. And if you're talking about alignment I'm surprised you didn't mention castor. Basically caster is the angle that the steering rod pivot is connected to the front tyre. Too little angle and the steering will be all over the place but too great an angle and the steering will feel dead in the center. Again this is not something I ever change much. Although there are situations where you can use this setting to add slightly more toe with certain cars. Anyway... Spring rate you ought to adjust first than tweek dampers to your liking in combination. It's more about finding a compromise between how quickly the car gets "set" going into a corner, that is from when you first initiate a turn to when the car is actually making the turn. If you use too little spring than the wallow but if you use too much then the car will become ridiculously twitchy to drive. As you correctly pointed out. You should then set dampers relative to how stiff your springs are. That is stiffer springs ought to need slightly more damper. Too little damper and the car will pogo up and down but if you use too much than you're not using the full potential of the springs. And it's probably better to use slightly less rebound damper than bump damper to increase the response from when the springs become uncompressed. And I'm surprised that you didn't talk about ride height - at least in relation to suspension. Normally you want to have this as low as possible to lower the center of mass of the car and thus limit the amount of load that is transferred between the wheel while turning but if you have it too low not only will you have issues with the chassis bottoming out and hitting the road you will also have issues with limiting the amount of travel the suspension is actually able to do. The upshot of this being that you should use stiffer springs and more damper the lower you plan to run the car to compensate for this lack of travel. Also it's probably worth mentioning that downforce can have a massive effect on the cars springs. That is a car with high aeronautical downforce is going to need stiffer springs than a road car, just to offset the load produced by the aero. With all that out of the way... Personally I find it better to think of anti-roll bars as being like the trim of the car. That is all things being equal and you have the spring and damper of the car set correctly than these ought to be neutral. That is if you need to make major changes to correct the cars balance then you're possibly better off going back to changing the spring and damper settings. Once I get the balance of the car down then I'll play around with tyre pressure and camber to maximize the level of contact patch thus grip of the car. As well as the diff settings, brake balance rev limiters etc. Sorry for all the trainspotting crap but it does get a little bit frustrating when you see newbs become obsessed with setting up the car when in reality they'd be better off just practicing.

With regards to the toe, Viper was only showing the extremes of 3 SIM games. With regards to dampers, the consensus is that rebound is usually set higher / stiffer than compression, due to pogo effect. Soft lower setting rebound will give a passenger in a passenger car an ill pogo effect. Same for mountain bikes etc. Too much high / stiff setting rebound at an extreme will cause the packing down effect onto the bumpstops which you do not want. There is always a balance. These are for fast damping settings, low speed damping settings are not associated with bumps and kerbs and undulations on the track.

I'm just wondering, I have this theory / idea about ARB settings indirectly play with camber settings aswell? With stiff ARB setting the car rolls less. Doesn't that also mean you require 'less' camber for the tyres to have maximum ground contact? Same applies to having softer camber, more body roll so more camber required? Please correct me if i'm wrong!
@fondfarewell2
@fondfarewell2 6 лет назад
BigMiker TQ yes! Was thinking the same thing, it should correlate directly to anti roll settings, I don't know if games are accurate with these settings but it definitely should, a stiffer suspension, with less body roll should need less camber. But there is something else called caster, that may be involved in the amount of camber angle that comes in front tires without any load or body roll, just from the geometry of the suspension alone.. It's all very interesting stuff.
@NicB-Creations
@NicB-Creations 4 года назад
@@fondfarewell2 I guess it's also very dependant on suspension type/geometry. If you're in VW beetle the camber will vary wildly depending on body roll and compression. If you have double wishbone like any modern car not so much.

*For the front camber* : drive 1 lap, then the inside part of the tire must be +-8 degrees hotter than the outside. Same for the rear but this time the inside must be +-6 degrees hotter. Setup the camber to match these values, remember that more negative camber mean more temperature gap between inside and outside. @viperconcept

Do you find you get competitive times with your camber settings for GT3s only being between -1.5 to -2.5? I almost run this on my daily driver, and my mechanic was telling me that for racing you'd run substantially more. I generally tune sim GT3 cars to have between -3.5 and -4.5 for the quickest hotlaps, and most understeer-defeating characteristics.

This Video needs some more Gran Turismo "Style" CarSetup-Informations: 1) tune the Carsetup for Handling, NOT for Grip! 2) when you only stiffen anything on one axle, SpringRate, AntiRollbar or Damper, you are removing mechanical grip from that axle. 3) Anybody who says Camber removes/reduces cornering grip, doesn't understand points 1 & 2. 4) Increasing SpringRate push the wheels into the tarmac. 5) Increasing ARB tends to make the inside wheel light. 6) roll resistance is the total of SR and ARB Front & Rear. 8) When tuning the Suspension AND Differential most often you need to compensate, for adjusting one setting by adjusting a few more. 9) Toeangles are used to dial in fine handling between the Axles, unless from the compromise tuned SR, ARB, Damper, Diff and Ride Height setting. For Example: a low power FR car has wheel spin but your car is balanced in the corner, what to do?? Lower the ARB and raise the SpringRate. This will keep the roll resistance coupling the same BUT will make the inside tire more planted and capable of putting down the power. THIS WILL REQUIRE adjusting the differential to get the most out of. -regards

There is 1 complaint I'm going to make that is missing here in this video. (And you HAVE to make a video to explain this) In Assetto Corsa the complexity of the Dampers (Some cars are different than others) and also the Advanced Suspension setups. (The tab for Advanced Suspension, that area can be rather confusing on some cars) How do you tune these? I cannot for the life of me understand how this works. I think Project Cars 2 even has something similar to these but it's probably named different and isn't as confusing. I know I know, your video showed how but it's a basic tune idea. In terms of a complex setup (And also for better alignment of tires and balance of suspension) this actually needs to be explained as a advanced setup tutorial for some people who don't really get the idea behind it and would like to study about it a bit more. I've sim raced around the likes of GT5-GT6 but currently been playing Assetto Corsa and Project Cars 2. Now in GT5-6 it was simple to know what to do. But however, Assetto Corsa and Project Cars 2 are a bit more advanced and not a simplified. (Same with other more complex sims like Iracing and the old fav Nascar Racing 2003 season) Both games are far more detailed than GT is but it doesn't mean it's not realistic. It just means there is more to play around with just like the real world and is a complex system that does take a bit of working around to get the handling and performance just right. (Hence why drivers and teams spend HOURS and DAYS on 1 setup tune job for 1 race and Qualifying) I mean yeah, I think people will bash me and say a lot of things that I just suck at tuning but I think even for advanced tuners this is a good thing to study about. This will even help amateurs to even noobies figure out the complexity of the system and work up to that point in learning about complex tuning. Hopefully, this will give you a good video to make and probably make people think about complex suspension systems being not as hard as it looks! :D

I am using a G29 Logitech wheel and I find it really difficult to find the sweet spot threshold of the break pedal setup... I tried looking at some of my tunes after watching this video. Putting +0.1 rear toe has helped tremendously with not losing the back end while cornering, yet I still seem to be having trouble with how stiff the car feels. I get the whole anti-roll bar thing, but even when I make the front so soft it might as well not be there, and the rear stiff as a board, I still get understeer until I try to exit the corner, and THEN, the oversteer kicks in. I've messed with the differential so that I don't lose traction under acceleration, and yet it still feels like the car doesn't want to turn until I bring it down to unbearably slow speeds (and M. Rossi goes right by me.) Been having to lift off for the Kink at Nurburgring GP, which is supposed to be flat out. My only other thought is downforce, but the car I'm trying to work with has no option to adjust the aero. Also, can you make a follow-up video to explain front caster angle? I have absolutely no idea what it is or how it affects the car, because I can't tell a difference in performance when I switch it from one extreme to the other.
@WireSniffer
@WireSniffer 6 лет назад
Putting toe-in +0.1 to +0.2 on the rear is about what you need. Toe out of -0.1 to -0.2 is about what you need on the front, sometimes 0.0 nothing Softening front springs, dampers, ARB. But remember doesn't have to be a softer setting than the rear for RWD cars. It also sounds like your LSD is too high. You only need enough LSD power to pull you out of a corner. You only need enough LSD Coast Decel to stop wandering looseness during braking zones. You only need enough LSD preload / initial torque for mid corner neutral throttle application. Remember downforce only effects high speed corners of a 5th, 6th gear selection + 1st 2nd gear slow speed corners are mechanical grip not downforce. 3 and 4 are combination of mechanical grip and downforce generally.

I guy called Casey Ringley shared this on the PC2 forum. I don't which sim you are playing, but I hope this helps you out... Casey's post: forum.projectcarsgame.com/showthread.php?57541-Project-CARS-2-Tyre-Pressures "Here are some rough targets for the main tire groups. Formula Cars (IndyCar, FX, FA, FR3.5): 1.7bar front / 1.45bar rear (24psi / 21psi) at road circuits. The Dallara IR-12 oval/speedway tires like up to 45psi on the right side. Modern GT & LMP: ~1.8bar front and rear. Maybe down to 1.6bar for a very slow track like Long Beach or higher to 1.90-1.95bar at Le Mans to squeeze a little bit more off the rolling resistance. Touring cars & V8 Supercar: 2.0-2.15bar front and rear Ford Fusion: 2.4-2.6bar front and rear for road courses. Ovals might go to 3.0bar+ (45-50psi) on the right side Light sportscars (Radical, BAC, KTM, etc): ~1.6bar (24psi) Road car tires: All in the 2.1-2.2bar (29-32psi) range hot. Any MotorTrend readers will know how much they stop every few laps and bleed pressure to hold that target during the BDC tests. Vintage GT: Roughly the same range as modern GT Vintage Group 6 & Formula: Bit more flexible here. Something in the 1.7bar (25psi) range is usually a good starting point up to 2.0bar (29psi) or down to 1.2bar (17psi) to adjust for balance on something wild like the Lotus 72D"

Viper, that specific claim "Less surface touching the ground = Less grip" implies that friction is determined by contact area. But it is not! Friction is only a function of 'weight x friction coeficient between materials'. So, instead of maximizing the contact area to maximize friction, the point with camber is: to change the way the forces are transmitted to the rest of the car; ensure equally tyre wear and temperature; thus making possible better control over your car.
@yosyp5905
@yosyp5905 6 лет назад
That's only true for static friction, not rolling friction. A tyre and a cube on a plane do not follow the same formulas.
@WireSniffer

@yosyp5905
@yosyp5905 6 лет назад
@@WireSniffer I dunno why it's not the same for static friction, but when I imagine just a couple of atoms wide tyre and I compare it with a planet-size one I usually can't think they are the same... On the other hand, having a huge plane and a little base cilinder (equal mass, equal everything) they have the same friction... Mh.
@Daanik8
@Daanik8 6 лет назад
I had to do some research after Yosyp's comment, and he's right. Contact area affects the magnitude of dynamic friction. Even though the tyre is not sliping, one cannot say its 'molecular filaments' are static in its contact with the ground. With tyres been wider on sport vehicles I think it is to distribute the power transmitted to the tyres so wear is minimized. I can't say, though, how much of this widening would be to reduce wear or to garantee better friction. But I would bet it is more on the reduce wear side.

Viper great video! - but you are missing an update on the Dampers section, high speed damping (bumps, kerbs) and low speed damping (weight transfer rate/ speed) are 2 different damper settings, but more importantly how the soft and stiff compression and rebound (low speed) settings effect oversteer / understeer characteristics. I'm yet to find a definitive explaination, explaining this clearly, and although your old video explains how I think it's correct stiffer = less grip. Some SIM Racers here are using opposite tactics on RU-vid Videos. Please can you do in depth Damper video so we can wrap this up once and for all! It's driving me nuts I've searched everywhere.

Hello guys, greetings from Istanbul, Turkey. I have some questions for you and all racers here, who play Gran Turismo Sport. 1. Are these tuning tips usable and suitable for Dualshock 4? Because I can't currently afford a G29 and I think I can't afford for some time (currency issues, because our currency is getting less valuable, things we import become more expensive, 1€ = 7 Turkish Liras and 1$ = 5.40 Turkish Liras currently.) But I want to join Manufacturer Series and race online. I know most of them are steering set users like you, Viper, so I asked. Can I use these tips on DS4? Is it possible to be good with controller too? Second, I want to ask about a recommendation. What manufacturer do you recommend on Manufacturer Series? I saw Mercedes' AMG GT3, and it seems like a good car to race in Group 3 races. But I have an NSX Group 4 and I like that car too, so I am between Honda and Mercedes. Do you and other racers here have a recommendation? Thank you for answers!

Why does the rear usually have less camber? It is being applied to the same Lateral G Force so why?

On most cars the weight is more on the front due to engine placement. Also weight shifts forward when trailbraking.
