Racism in Hawaii From My Point of View 

I lived on O'ahu for 9 years, but since I am white I still got bullied throughout the six years I've attended school there. I've had to hide in bathroom stalls so people didn't beat me up for being a "stupid haole". Keep in mind that I'm a skinny geek that reads books during lunch and I wasn't raised to beat people up so I didn't know how to fight. It was very unjust and unfair of them to go after me even if I was unable to do anything to defend myself. (I'm not targeting a certain race. It wasn't just native hawaiian people. But people of many different races and ethnicities have bullied me so I don't judge by race, I judge because they hurt me because I couldn't hurt them back)

I like how they try to say "haole" isn't racist yet they almost exclusively use it in a negative connotation.

You're correct. It's not hatred towards white people. Skin color is irrelevent. It's the negative stereotypes associated with white people (complaining, demanding everything be your way, disrespecting other cultures). Plenty of white people are born and raised in hawaii and get along just fine with everyone else. Hawaii is the only state in the US with a predominantly Asian population and this bleeds heavily into the cultural fabric.

Based on the comments here the aloha spirit has been redefined to, “respect us and we won’t beat you up”. Very friendly indeed.

I’ve lived in Hawai’i my whole life born and raised. Both my parents are Hawaiian though my mom has a lighter skin color. I was born with light skin and even though I was Hawaiian, even though my entire family is Hawaiian just because I was born with a lighter skin color than others and I speak good English I get bullied everyday by classmates, co workers, random people on the street, and worst of all my own family. Looking the way I used to be bullied everyday in elementary, middle school, and high school. I still love these islands, i still love my friends and family but, living in Hawai’i has been a living hell for all my life.

Im from Hawaii, born and raised. I moved around the states and traveled a bit. I’ve experienced and seen racism in every place I’ve been. People are not saints. Hawaii got good, lovable, open minded people & bad, lolo, racist, closed minded dumb people too.

I really like the part that you mentioned about asking "how are you?". In the mainland, it mostly doesn't mean anything, but here in Hawaii, people are genuinely interested in what's going on with you, your family, your work, especially if they hadn't seen you in a while. I’m from Maui and I’m born and raised . My family personally don’t go out of our way to be racism and yes I am Hawaiian also . We really don’t like how some tourists disrespect the land and trespass into places that are “kapu” also meaning forbidden! And the not looking both ways when crossing the street because we don’t wanna be responsible for killing someones Bebeh . Another thing is just disrespectful actions like littering and being careless about the ecosystem. Just be smart and safe .

I live in Maui now 6 years. I've been visiting Hawaii since 5 years old (I am 40). There are trade offs to living anywhere. Utopian society does not exist anywhere. It is my most discerning viewpoint that Hawaii and Aloha together are a myth. Its a marketing ploy...just like Luau's. Its smoke and mirrors. To be a temporary visitor here on holiday and/or to get married is typically a great experience. The locals at the hotels would love to be doing anything else for work, although thru years of gentrification and exploitation via commercial development it is one of the only options for work among the local people; who for the most part are under-appreciated and under-educated by the rest of the world. I notice a very palpable underlying tension between most locals and white people living here. Of course, there are exceptions! Of course, people reading this will argue with this point and will defer to some anecdotal evidence that may prove otherwise. But make no mistake...from a truly objective position on the issue (in my opinion), the Aloha spirit, as it relates to white people, is essentially non-existent. Racism here is real and it is primarily aimed at white people. If you still doubt me, come here and hang out with (if you have one) an Asian looking friend (who is not from Hawaii) and observe how much differently they are received. Its alarmingly different. And, the only difference is skin color. Said Asian looking person may even have an LA valley guy accent, but will be shown a respect that is only earned by their appearance. This is going on longer than I anticipated....so in Summation, living here is amazing. It has so many positive elements that it is too long to list on a RU-vid comment section. HOWEVER, if you are a sensitive person, an intellectual and/or cannot stomach being Pre-judged on a daily basis, I would venture to say that Hawaii, for you, may be a place best to just visit for 2 weeks; stay around too long and you may begin to feel very differently about this Island Paradise that is "technically" part of the United States of America.

I was born and raised in Hawaii and there is good and bad here, as with all places. We all strive to exemplify the "high road" of every culture, just simply being good, doing good, and showing "aloha", love and respect to all people. Can you stop spewing the tourism marketing propaganda. There is no real "Aloha spirit", its just a marketing gimmick. You don't sound like you've lived there long enough to know better. Hawaii is THE MOST racist state in the US, and I've lived there long enough to know (5 years). I've also been all over the US, and the world, for that matter.

I'm white and live on the Big island. I have never experienced any overt racism. Just be respectful and you will get respect.

When Hawaii became a state and fell under the protection of the federal government it is no longer the land of indigenous people. It is the land of all Americans. To argue that point means those indigenous people don’t mind learning mandarin.

This works for adults, but sadly if you have school age children it does not. The racism runs down to the kids who only see the skin color part. I'm not just talking about high school kids either, my daughter is 9 and the way she gets picked on in school will make you sick. Saying thing like "we are brown and your white so you can't play with us" They throw things at her all the time. The list goes on and on, but now she is Catholic school and now she's fine. So the fact that they teach it to their kids is just sad!

The word "Haole" is descriptive and it's perception is based upon whether or not yours is positive, negative or nonchalant. I appreciate your point of view.

I'm a carpenter/cabinet maker here in Seattle. I emailed back an forth with a guy on Big Island who had a craigslist ad offering his services as a competent carpenter. He lived there a short time having moved from California. He said he answered ads looking for help but employers never called back. He claimed locals get the jobs first whether they are qualified or not. Have you experienced anything like this?

FYI not all brown ppl you see in Hawaii are Hawaiians . They could be Tahitian , Samoan , etc .. known as Polynesians s Saying someone is Hawaiian because they're Tahitian is like saying you're French because you were born in Germany because Germany is in Europe . Hawaiians are people who's ancestors are from Hawaii Just like Tahitians are ppl who's ancestors are from Tahiti . I'm sorry I moved to Kauai 2 moths ago and Everything your saying has some truth ,but I'm black and I work in nursing I lost 3 cases because they told my boss they wanted someone of the same race taking care of them and another person told my boss that their mother was happy to have her son there because she did not feel safe with a black man in her house. Honestly hawaii has a lot of simple minded people no body challenges each other or push each other to be better. I was told I had to many over the top s jobs on my resume so they will go with someone else because they did not want to pay me for having the experience. Hawaii meaning the local has taught me word "howley" meaning hating white people. I'm sorry but what I'm going threw is not the same yes the honor is their and respect ,but the people here already have in mind their judgment on people and you have to prove yourself. my work and education talks for me I'm going to honolulu maybe there since is more mainstream ill have a better chance of living life as a black man

It's all relative I guess. Depends where you live in Hawaii, who you know, who you are. (What your pecking order is in general). I've seen the best in some Hawaiians, I've seen the worst. I think the same can be said of every race.

Good advice Jeff. I have traveled to Hawaii many times. I have always tried to be respectful, make an effort to learn the language and the culture. My husband and I never have had a problem yet. Be respectful and kind towards the locals. People must remember this is their home, their land. Dont go there and be an A#$#@hole.

While I appreciate you attempt to be fair-minded fella, like many other mainlanders who have recently moved to Hawaii, you're justifying the "locals" racism, hatred and xenophobia as simply an aspect of their popular culture. We lived and taught school on the BIG Island for 7 years and could not wait to get off that rock. My wife and I have traveled a good portion of this Earth and Hawaii ranks high on the most racist, xenophobic places on the planet. For instance, what do you think would happen on the mainland if you or I displayed half the Nativism "locals" exhibit daily in Hawaii? Here's a tip, the locals are mocking your for wearing that flowered "Aloha" shirt.

I am from Hawaii and believe it or not I am Korean and white. Being raised here was terrible. They had “kill HoUlie” day in the last day of the school day. Looking for white made me a target. What I have learned from this is that I never judge someone by the way they look. My husband is Creole and Filipino so our children have never had to deal with racism ( thank goodness). But they have had to witness the way I am treated. I am still treated badly by some people here because I am White. So racism is still present in my life even at 53 years old. SAD

I am one local boy on Oahu and it’s true there is a lot of racism on Oahu. My mom is pure white and my dad is From the Philippines, she was born and raised here she had to earn her respect everyone hated her but now she’s a paramedic with local respect. I recently saw people from da mainland writing BLM on a turtle and tourists being so disrespectful it angers me! I went on a trip to Waikiki cuz I like surf there and my family was bored and we were surprised to see so many tourists that weren’t following quarantine! I really don’t care about people coming here just please be respectful

Hey man thank you for posting your views on this touchy subject. Not very many people do but... you GET IT! Hawaii is all about love and respect. Attitude is everything and you nailed it. "Just be cool." People like you can stay no problem. The ones you warned about, please use your roundtrip ticket lol. Again, mahalo bruddah!

What he said--"It really comes down to common sense and understanding the culture." Yes! Totally agree. I am a mix of Hawaiian, Irish, Filipino, and Chinese. In my family's generation--like all my cousins--between both sides of my family, has ALL the colors of people commenting on here. Our big family gatherings are a sight to see when we work together, share dishes we love, introduce new family members, and enjoy music. Also, it's not uncommon that someone brings along a friend they may have made that very day. I'll tell you what though, people who are there at the party are not yelling while standing on chairs or being disrespectful in general. Like attracts like. It all starts with humility. I'm not saying racism doesn't exist at all, for those that sadly have experienced it, I'm sorry. However, let's just consider a factor that may contribute to the Ill reception some may have experienced. Hawaii is a small area when compared to, say the continent of North America, and I think the small islands are not made for this many people. I think people who visit experience a level of disappointment that Hawaii didn't deliver what was advertised to them in various forms of media generated by the commercial "fake people" and "those who only think about money." Therein lies a disconnect between what prospective visitors see and what is actually here, and I blame the marketing departments of businesses, State of Hawaii tourism board, real estate, and private tourism businesses who generate that false notion that Hawaii's beaches are empty, or that the people are obligated to be in servitude or the women be docile--when really, it's all just clever marketing and a means to an end that resonates with some people and gives them permission to "put yourselves first, cause you deserve it." I like the kind of visitors that are here for the culture and who want to participate, personally, and there are many who respond to those messages instead. Hawaii is like having a three bedroom house and having that one materialistic family member who thinks it's a good idea to throw a house party and charge cover for his selfish gain alone. Let's say he already put the fliers out that the food & drinks are free, there's lots of room, and that girls cover is free! People show up, resources like food is depleted, people pushing each other for space, etc. and there's tension. In this analogy, of course the rest of the family who just wants to cook dinner and relax at their home or watch tv will not be with it. So when people who are coming under a false pretense "as guests" start to be treated unwelcomely by the rest of the family from that household, is either party to blame? I'd say the guy who created the problem should be held accountable. Visitors and people moving here get duped, and long-time residents and ESPECIALLY descendants of this land are pushed out of their home due to high costs, and not to mention the homeless problem. the problem is the agencies groups who commodify Hawaii. Its the reason we come back year after year. We are going on our 12th year coming to the islands and the reason that it brings me back time and time again is the Aloha of the people. No fancy jewelry, no fancy dresses just me . Its very freeing and what I look forward too the most (other then the land and ocean)and I love it!

So, what it all boils down to, is that it is OK to be a Racist as long as you are not a White Racist. A racist is a racist.

Lived on Oahu for many years, as well as Korea, Philippines, and Thailand. There is good and bad everywhere. Keep this in mind: You are a guest, and if you act accordingly, you will have no problems. Not to say you should kowtow, but respect goes a long way. If you are disrespectful, you should expect the same in kind. How would you feel if someone came to your house/neighborhood and disrespected you? My guess is you would not be too happy about it. Do problems exist in Hawaii? Of course, just like anywhere else in the world. Are there places that are not "safe" after dark? Of course, just like every major metropolitan city in the world. Ask yourself, "Is there a place in my current city where it is not safe for me to go rooming around intoxicated late at night?" There is your answer. Give respect to get respect and you will do fine. There are knuckleheads everywhere.

People only talk about haole's being victim of racism from racist hawaiians. There is also a lot of racism against east asians living here in Hawaii. I am pile example of a person who grew up in Kaneohe, went to garbage public school there, to be told to go back to Japan, called rice eye, get into multiple fights with hawaiian kids. I dont even call them classmates because I don't view a lot of these Hawaiian trouble makers as colleagues. Just saying, it is not only haole's who are victims of racist-rude hawaiian people.

Hawaiians in my experience are more racist than southerners. And just because you are nice and respectful doesn't mean you it will be reciprocated. Racism is very rampant down here no matter how nice you are lmao.

Generally, this works the same anywhere you go but especially here where different races and nationalities have compromised to live in harmony and peace: If you bring attitude you get attitude! If you disrespect others, YOU WILL get disrespect. Hawaii is not a caucasian culture, despite what it looks like. It is a blend of many cultures. We live and learn from each other. We all speak English or something like it as a common form of communication among different nationalities. If you make the mistaken assumption that it's exactly like Austin or LA or, NY and act like you are still there you will in all probability struggle until you leave disappointed with nothing nice to say about the place or the people. If that's the case you have entirely missed the point, missed out. All of the folks are warm and gracious when you get to know them .But like anywhere else, there are problem citizens. Hang out with good folks and you will not be disappointed!

I enjoyed your video. Having lived most of my life in Hawaii, the topic of racism certainly resonates, though I really never had to deal with it. You state at the beginning of the video that you are not suggesting anyone "kiss butt," but then you spend the next nine minutes telling people to do just that. Also, you confuse the term "local" with the term "Hawaiian." There is some intersection of these two populations, but not as much as one might think. Many of the racists (and yes, I think that is the correct term) have no more Hawaiian blood than you or I do. The best point made in your video is that anyone moving to Hawaii needs to accept that the lifestyle will be unlike what they are used to. If a new resident can make this cultural jump, groveling before locals should be entirely unnecessary. I look forward to future videos from you. Nice job!

This is a great video! Thank you. I just finished a book "Haoles in Hawai'i" by Judy Rohrer (University of Hawai'i Press, 2010). I'd highly recommend it.

Stay humble, we're all in together and being so isolated Hawaiians really have to practice that. I think of the Japanese sword makers who ritualized the process so as to carry on the tradition. So it makes sense they would get defensive of our Aloha tradition. Here on the mainland the story is we are only being divided more.

This video was right but super wrong at the same time. I'm Portuguese i grew up on Oahu, Waianae to be exact. I always showed the utmost respect to the best of my ability while growing up and i can say with Certainty that Waianae is one of the only places in the United States that you will experience true racism for being white. I was bullied throughout my childhood for the color of my skin and the silly part of it is my great great great grandparents came over to work on the plantations when they were kids. But i'm viewed as someone who came from the states and am trying to take their land.

I lived in Asia for over 11 years - there were few instances of racism I ran into there, but nothing really major. I came back and live/work in Silicon Valley. Strangely enough, what I tend to notice a lot from Asians in this area is flagrant racism. Many of them came here on H1B visas, got their green cards and lived here for many years, but my impression is that they just keep to their "own", don't want to interact with other "races" and I doubt really give a shit about USA. I think that if a civil war broke out (considering the recent news that might happen in the future) they'd pack up their shit and go back to their respective countries. If you're a white guy and talk to a Chinese girl, bunch of Chinese guys will come and create drama and the girl will be afraid to give out her number. This is true of Koreans, Vietnamese and other Asian men. At lunch time at work if you sit at a table with asians and try to engage in a conversation they will rudely ignore you or give you snide comments - because you're white and they don't want to talk to you. There is a saying I would hear while in Asia: "when in Rome do like the Romans do" - so I would try to give respect to their culture while there...but I came back here to USA only to witness them not follow their own "rule" and not giving a f**k bout respecting US culture and not even wanting to interact with it? In essence only caring about the money they make? I'm sorry but that is bullshit. I'm wishing now I never lived in Asia because of the double standard I'm seeing. Right now I'm looking for work awaaaaay from Silicon Valley (one reason being the BS I'm witnessing) and hopefully I'll be out of here soon. I guess what I'm saying is that in some ways I can understand where Hawaiians come from.

Is it physically safe to be there, even if someone is just minding his business not doing anything will I as a main lander get a lot of negative attention?

I've visited Hawaii so many times as a child and a few as an adult. I was surprised to hear about racism existing there because I've never experienced it, like, at all and I'm white as white can be. Everyone was really nice I thought. Maybe some people don't understand that hospitality and tact goes both ways. I mean how long would you want to be nice to someone who comes into your house and starts trashing the place? You have to be respectful of your host to get respect as a guest.

I grew up around a couple of Hawaiian families in California. Made Hawaiian friends over the years. Been to Hawaii a few times. Man, I love Hawaiian people. That's all I have to say.

I understand that the cost of living has been made harder for locally raised people because people from elsewhere buy. But if all the tourists left and all the hotels closed, most of my friends there would have to leave. They are making their living directly or second hand from the tourism industry. Lots of Hawaiians are benefitting from Social Security, disability, welfare etc. All provided because they are part of the US. I am just saying that it is too late to turn back to a time hundreds of years ago. I do not think that the people today could be self sustaining again. Sad but true everywhere. It is wonderful that there is a renewed interest in the language, arts, culture and soul of the Hawaiian history.

When I visited Hawaii for the first a few years ago, I was curious to know what careers brought white people in from the mainland. I was also curious about the homeless there too which I saw a few of, too. Do most of your Caucasians see themselves staying on the island for the rest of lives?

Any time you move to a different country or continent you should always respect there culture. If you move to Japan you should respect there culture and try to fit in....If you move to Brazil you should respect there culture and blend in and NOT the other way around where you think they should blend in with your culture.

I'm a Native Texan who just returned from Oahu. I found this video interesting. I didn't have any problems with locals maybe because of my laid back Texas attitude, as this guy would agree just because you live in Hawaii doesn't mean your Hawaiian as the same for Texas. I found a lot of similarities between the two states local attitudes. Texas is a cesspool of different states and countries now, mainly from the east and west coast. I guess what I'm trying to get at and I see this across the country is, it seems to be Nobel to discriminate against anyone who is proud of where the came from and I get it, but here on Texans, I'm a racist if I say anything to anyone especially if they're waiving their countries flag in my face.

That's not anything like my two years on Kauai. You've been lucky. I have a hard time seeing how a 110 pound English girl (my girlfriend at the time) had such an attitude problem that it would warrant having "fucking haole!" shouted at her with regularity and be attacked by two local guys, not to mention my own numerous experiences. The locals are not normally heart broken Hawaiians who are bummed out because someone from there sold land to a white guy from somewhere else. They're normally the cane worker offspring (a mix of Filipino, Puerto Rican, Japanese and Portuguese with maybe a splash of native, MAYBE) who are just dicks. That's my experience. Aloha is a total crock of bs. That's something made up for tourists' consumption. Just another person's view on it. No offense intended.

It is truly a shame to read see such narrow-mindedness in the comment section. Yes, race is important, insofar as knowing your roots, understanding history and the current times. But being racist (judging an INDIVIDUAL based on their race) is just plain stupid. Again, it is helpful to understand how people of different races feel about each other, but holding on to racial prejudices puts one at a disadvantage. The worst is victim thinking, i.e., we are victims of white colonialism. Thinking that way is not really helpful -- please think about that. Better to let that attitude go and focus on ways of being a better person and improving your community. You will find individuals of all races to be allies in the good work, whatever that means to you. For me that is empowering my brothers and sisters with good health, correct thinking, and a habitat conducive to their spiritual development. I think therein lies the possibility of peace and freedom for humanity. I don't intend to sound all spiritual or whatever; I just intend to help someone let go of their victim-thinking with the words above. There may be 'white-devils' ruling the world, but that doesn't mean you should hate them. And you certainly shouldn't hate some of your brothers and sisters just because they happen to belong to the same race as the ruling elite. Btw, I don't belong to any one race, so I have a very objective view of racism in general. Also, I am grateful to all of my ancestors.

I have A Friend that is from Hawaii (born and raised and yes An Actual Hawaiian) He lives over here on the main land in Las Vegas now and He calls Me “Haole” all the time anyway , What do I do ? I Laugh and don’t take it personally .

I'm Filipino, we've been referred to as a flip and bookbook...growing up in hawaii no one is over anybody and that's how you grow up. You respect everybody no matter how you live or where you live. Great video! You really explained "Racism" in Hawaii as well as how to blend in to the Aloha lifestyle incredibly well!! I personally think the mainland could use the Aloha Spirit too...it would certainly do some good!!

You Really don't need to understand the culture if you don't disrespect it, if your not a trouble maker, a person destroying things, stealing. If your a kick back person, not rude, can talk right to others how you would like to be talked to. You will be fine. By doing these simple thing you will have a wonderful time, now the local that treat you badly still are the punks an yes every culture has them, but as many times as i been to Hawaii I have never met one like this guy said they are kind caring people the first time I went I was shocked!! I felt like I was family for reals.

I liked the video, but I want to share a little history that many people likely do not know. The word "haole" can't be a derogatory slang. It can be used in such a way that it comes off as derogatory (albeit, erroneously), but you can pretty much do that with any word depending on tone and inflection. You do state that it means foreigner in your video, but not the history as to how it came to be mostly used in reference to white Americans. The history of the word goes back prior to western contact. The first time it was used was in a chant in the Kumulipo (essentially Hawaii's creation story and national epic). The chant of Kūaliʻi has the earliest use of the word. "ʻAʻole o Kahiki kānaka; Hoʻokahi o Kahiki kānaka, he haole." This excerpt roughly translates to "There are no peoples of Kahiki; There is only one people of Kahiki, a foreign people." Kahiki is the origin of the gods in the Hawaiian mythos and I refuse to go too deep into that subject, for the sake of expediency. But the statement being made here is more or less an observation made by Kūaliʻi himself. He claimed to have travelled to Kahiki and to have seen the people who lived there, but he knew that the people who claimed to be native to there were actually from another place. You could say that Kūaliʻi understood human migration before most people. But that is not really what I am trying to point out here. Haole, in its original sense, means foreigner, plain and simple. But how did it come to be used for white people almost exclusively? This story starts during the plantation days, when many different kinds of foreigners were moving to the kingdom of Hawaiʻi. The natives needed new ways to refer to their foreign neighbors in a way that distinguished them from each other. Words like pākē (chinese), kōlea (korean), pilipino (filipino), pōpolo (african), and paniolo (spaniard, but also cowboy) were created by native Hawaiians to refer to the different denominations of peoples. But, in an interesting twist, european and white american foreigners insisted on referring to themselves as haole. So this explains the reference, but what about the derogatory sense of the word? The offensive meaning comes from a correlation between the american overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom and the fact that european/american immigrants called themselves haole. So it really has nothing to do with race and more to do with the history of Hawaii and its people. Great video and keep it up!

If being yourself is being a loud mouth, self centered, "all eyes on me", "Im better than you" mentality take it to Hawaii, don't bring it my neighborhood. But when I visit Hawaii. Leave before I get there and take it back to the mainland! I don't blame the hawaiin people with being fed up with those-Howlies? (i thought it was howie). The spirit of Ohana and Aloha can be practiced everywhere. It's taking a sincere interest in others, respecting people and being courteous, polite, mannerly. And it costs $NOTHING$! But when you put it into practice the rewards are priceless. I suggest everyone should practice it here in the States for at least 2 weeks before they visit Hawaii. It will do wonders for your experience over there and back home.

You have some very good advice for visitors as well as new residents, I commend you in trying to enlighten those who don't really understand or had a not so hot time there. I added a bit of HI history on why the locals are a bit pissed off, there is a reason for it. Regardless of where you go in this world, your are a visitor and you should respect the culture and people of that particular place. Your attitude and how you treat others will REALY determine how you are treated in turn. its the same attitude at your home, I hope you don't treat those in you community like your above them, if you do we can't help you here. I'm not saying racism is not present but you should understand HI history and current social situation and when visiting or moving into any new place be aware and curious of those around you. You may be surprised. That being said. I was raised from 2 1/2 to my early twenties in HI, between the Big island and Oahu, Oh and I'm white and have mainland roots. My father and brother still live their and they are considered locals, they are accepted, Ohana. A little HI history lesson, (808Fdup does have a point) if it hasn't been noted. HI is an occupied nation. That is the ugly truth!. for one. the US marines invaded Ohau, held the Queen hostage and then later in-prisoned her in her home/palace. this was a recognized nation - Hawaiian Kingdom, with many treaties with other foreign countries including the US. So that should tell you something. The Marines, and some others, who wanted to overthought the monarchy/nation broke internal law and committed treasonist act when they did this. There is documented proof that the queen DID NOT turn her country over to the US, that later became a territory then a state. then to whitewash the whole thing those who were for this rewrote the books and re-educated the local population into believing the propaganda that the Hawaiian nation wanted to be part of the US. Heck some of the documentation is still found in the DC archives. How is that for irony. Oh and by the way, prior to the occupation over 98% of the people could read and write, the language was Hawaiian, everyone who lived and love HI was considered Hawaiian. There is so much more to this history its mind boggling what was done. Their are websites that even go into this history, all you have to do is look. So that being said and with sacred grounds bing destroyed, land being being bought by "outsiders" and built on for profit. The local people being treated like second hand citizens (similar to NA) and people/vistors wonder why the locals are a bit peeved (to say it nicely). Remeber, keep and open mind when you go, be open to the people and her culture. Be mindful of your surroundings, like with anyplace, but have a wonderful time if you ever get a chance to visit their.

Fantastic Video. I've visited Hawaii many times over the last 15 years for both work and vacation. I've stopped and talked with the Hawaiian Independence folks on Kauai and talked with the folks protesting on top of Mauna Kea. I understand where they are coming from. I sympathize with them. I've contributed to their causes. Not necessarily because I agree with all they have to say, but because I understand their unhappyness. Maybe that's because I'm from the South. Not saying that all Southerners get it, but when talking about conquered nations, many of us Southerners get it. Can't fly the flag, can't sing Dixie etc. For many of us, the flag, Dixie etc are simply cultural. They are representative of home. Hawaiians feel that their land was unlawfully conquered. I get it. That doesn't mean that if they had remained independent, they would have all been living happily and in harmony, but they would have been in control of their own destiny, which is what all people want. I've read the history of Hawaii. Watched movies about it. I've visited ʻIolani Palace and Hulihe‘e Palace with a different set of eyes than a typical uneducated Haole might. Here in the South we get upset when people from other parts of the country move here and complain about things (the heat, the driving, the slowness, the lack of entertainment, lack of alcohol sales on Sunday in some parts, etc...) and I'm sure the issues are exacerbated in Hawaii with such a small area and the overwhelming influx of foreigners. So, visitors, read up on the history of Hawaii. Listen when people talk. Be humble. Be reverent when in sacred places. Don't act like you would back home. This is a different place.

I can sympathize with their situation. But there is some bias in Hawaii that is deeply ingrained. I come from Alaska and have met plenty of Polynesian's and they are some of the most gentle giants I've ever met! Big strength and big hearts. Loyalty knows no bounds. But I warn you, white tourists or any tourists for that matter are not an enemy! It's ridiculous to think that people wanting to experience that particular culture are threatening in any way, if anything it shows how insecure the individuals are..

Some Polys are racist towards micronesians. Some look out for me, but Some call us dirty and shit. One time I was explaining what my ethnicity was to this girl and I was telling her about Guam and she seemed so interested, but when I said it's part of micronesia, she said "eww" Sooo.... Teasing another race and calling them dirty.

I'm half Puerto Rican and half Portuguese..I moved here because my husband is a full blooded local Polynesian and I have seen this happen..BUT..I think there is a difference between local and a Hawaiian ..a real Hawaiian and since I live in an area with tons of tourists.. my God I can see why they get beat up..some and I mean most..of the people that visit here are rude as hell with no social manners..it's something I would never have guessed until living in a place with tourists..I think your right about respect..but I have also seen people just standing there and being hassled about being a hoele..I had to ask my husband what that meant and I know it's bad cause he said...who called you that point them out...lol..but yes respect is what lots are lacking.
