I am a Black man. I was an ex-garage metal guitarist. And I am 'Classic' Metal fan (Priest, Accept, Metallica, Slayer, Dio, ect). After years of having to defend myself from racist bullshit from so called fans about how my skin color doesn't belong at this show, or how I can't play the music because 'my people just don't do it", I gotta thank you, Glen for laying it down for everyone. I dont' agree with his apology to be honest. He's sorry he was filmed doing it. Phil has a history of white pride bullshit. There's even a video on RU-vid of him years ago giving a white pride speech at one of his shows, he's goes off pretty hardcore in that video too. Sure he apologized, but it just shows what he is all about regardless if he apologizes or not.

+CrazyBadCuber Well... so what? There is brown pride and black pride. White pride is wrong? I'm just trying to understand how one kind of pride is "hatred" while another kind of pride is "cultural identity and healthy." It would appear that only "white pride" is hatred. Isn't there an MMA fighter with "BROWN PRIDE" tattooed on his stomach? Is that hatred 'bullshit' or is he just "positively identifying with his culture"?

CHERNOBYL STUDIOS lol you're a fucking tool man. Now you're a mind reader? You think I think black people saying black power wouldn't bother me? What the fuck did I just write above? Are you stupid, you can't read? I already acknowledged I don't think that shits right either. Also, just because phil said that, doesn't mean he's not going to get ANY consequences from it. He said it in a public place, hailed hitler while he was at it, in front of a bunch of people, and people carry portable cameras around with them everywhere these days. He deserves what he's getting. It's 2016. Grow the fuck up. There's no reason or need to be racist. Why is it ok for a racist to be hateful towards other groups of people, yet when they get backlash for it it's not ok for them to get consequences by the mass public for it? You're probably a god damned skinhead yourself. You're sure acting like one. Also I couldn't give any fucks at all what a drunk guy screaming white power means to you. You are not everybody. MOST people have a problem with racists these days. The fact that you do not, says a whole fuck of a lot about you. Now shut the fuck up, idiot. I'm muting this conversation so I don't have to hear back from a person as fucking moronic and stupid as you. Have a good day.

At a slipknot concert when the lights were on some skinhead was on someones shoulders waving a flag with a swastika, my friend asked the black dude standing next to him for the bottle he was holding, he said of course, and nailed the skinhead with with it.

@DaydreamAnatomy
@DaydreamAnatomy 8 лет назад
MrGenedancingmachine He probably got worse when the lights went out, he was really in the wrong crowd to do something like that, we were there to hear metal, not see people act like jackasses between sets. Waving a swatstika around in a public area, especially a highstrung and inebriated crowd at a metal concert, is a quick way to cause trouble, regardless of freedom of speech. What did he expect to happen? That the crowd would go, "wow, what a cool guy."

Daydream Anatomy You don't assault people, its very simple.
@DaydreamAnatomy
@DaydreamAnatomy 8 лет назад
MrGenedancingmachine I didn't, and I wouldn't. I'm just saying offensive behavior can have some backlash. It's not like the bottle hurt his that much, at most it'd have caught him wrong and cut his face. But he just looked in the direction it was thrown and started yelling. And a concert isn't a place where people can talk out their differences from 20 feet away. I mean I could see people being politely asked to move when smoking, or something, but he was just doing it to attract attention and cause something. I've also seen people get punished for moshing rudely, like not helping people up, and being assholes, shit some bands stop playing for. Which just pisses everyone off who was being respectful.

Phil grew up in the French quarter of Louisiana the most crazy and diverse place in the US. Phil is an Athiest as well so he did a live stream with AIU. Very surprising to see Phil as a fan of AIU. The only thing Phil is guilty of is not being ashamed of being white, which there's nothing wrong with that. In this situation he was fucking with hecklers in the audience. Watch his live stream with AIU. He tells a lot about his history and hobbies and racism isn't one of them. He gets a bad rap because of his image.

Good for you Glenn. I've been seeing a lot of casual racism in my personal life recently (I'm in the food industry, which is extremely diverse) and the most important thing we can do is stand up and publicly disagree. Racism lives in a bubble and too often, the people who hold these views are not challenged by the people in their lives. On the subject of Metal being inclusive: As inclusive as Metal is, there still seems to be a mentality that revolves around an Elitist mentality that is pressuring people to conform. I can remember a couple years ago after graduating High School that many of my Metal friends (not all of them) were in the scene and liked the music more as a Fraternity & not for the music itself. Some of these people gave me & others shit for being into Core bands or anything that wasn't Thrash, Death, Black Metal or Doom. I personally couldn't care less about that shit because its about the music being good no matter what it is. Not being apart of a club. According to many of those people I was never a true Metalhead. Even though I liked a lot of the bands they liked; I also liked a lot of the bands they hated. & they never tolerated it. Pretty stupid shit. Even after these people aren't in my life anymore, I still see Facebook posts every now & then that bash "false Metal." If members of the Metal community focused more on the music & not being apart of some Exclusive Group like a bunch of "Mean Girls" & Hipsters, then Metal would have a shot at producing many great bands again. Because if there is still an Elitist mentality, the genre/scene won't have any room to grow. As a consequence that isolation will force it to fade away when it never had to.

I talked a lot about musicians, but don't forget about the fans, the ones who never managed to play an instrument but still feel those shivers down their spine when they hear an awesome riff, the ones who fill stadiums to see their favorite bands, the ones who buy their albums and merch, the ones who still when not being musicians, can get the whole feeling of a good metal song. A good friend of mine who's going through some pretty rough shit physically is unable to play any instrument, he's barely able to walk actually, but I am yet to find someone who's more passionate about rock and metal. Tolerate extremist ideas (racism here) in Metal or subject everyone to political correctness or self-censorship? Why just tell Phill a big fuck off. Thats more honest. Why make him apologetic, or make him the way we wanted him to be (AKA peer pressure). Metal has been a subject of censorship in the past and we should be advocates of freedom of speech. This political correctness pisses me off just as well as the ultra nationalistic BS that has been said by some bands.

to be honest, i could give a shit if a musician is racist or homophobic. all i can say is it's pretty idiotic to to show it in public since your goal as a musician should be to get as many people as possible to hear your music - it's like running a business. why limit your "customers"? but i'm not gonna be one of these people saying i can't listen to pantera the same or i am devastated to see hetfield and ulrich in that pose... they're not superheroes and i'm not 12. just because i like someone's music does not mean they should be expected to cater to a pretentious romanticized lifestyle. racism is everywhere.

lets be honest, metal is dying. Not because of the sound, but because there is a very vocal minority in metal that is proudly racist, sexist, homophobic, etc. and the vast majority of the metal community is too silent when these things happen. It's the complacency that is killing metal and stopping minorities(which lets be honest, are a huge demographic that would be perfect for metal especially those who are being disenfranchised and attacked by our current government) from going to shows that are the majority of funding for these bands.

The only correct response here is, “Yeah, you’re right. Couple things. 1. It’s not necessarily some people’s apology to accept. I’m still contemplating forgiving the man. White power doesn’t really offend you unless you have someone you love, someone you would die for that is a person of color. Child, Wife, significant other etc. 2. I have heard some horror stories about being 1 of the 7 black guys in an audience out of 100 + people. No, not everyone there is racist most of the metal community is wholesome and inclusive. But if everyone is head banging and drunk af, who is going to save me from getting lynched, spit on, etc? These are real issues that still happen, and the people that do this evil are smart, they know it’s always best to act when no one is around or paying attention. I have no doubt if a bunch of drunk skin heads were following and harassing me at a Slayer concert I would be saved by some sober metal brethren who see what is happening. Still not sure about the apology after all of this time. I love Pantera, but this reminds me of how I felt when I found out my favorite author, H.P Lovecraft wrote a poem about me being lynched.

My issue is that Phil chose to end a charity/tribute event with hateful negativity. This is not the first time he's been called out on this stuff. When he is he says he's misunderstood, or he was drunk and didn't mean anything by it, he loves everyone....he cries that he's sorry. Then he does it again. Either man up and say, yeah I stand behind White Power and deal with the flack or stop saying it and then apologizing for it. He's gesture and yelling at the end of Dimebash has overshadowed what the event was about and turned what should have been a positive night into a negative division. I'm a huge fan of many of the bands Phil has been in but this kind of behavior really turns me off. And Phil has the fucking nerve to call out Rex Brown in the past on his drinking problems. Phil looks like a bloated out of control drunk right now. Get your shit together, Phil!

I am an African American. I'm also an old school Metal-head. Priest. Accept. Dio. Metallica. Megadeth. Slayer. Coroner. Kreator. I grew up with that racist mentality all around me. But i had no choice. I LIVED for the music, so I refused to stop listening to it. Hell, if my history served me right, the Blues reached the kids, where it became Rock 'n' Roll. Then became louder and experimental...Hard Rock. Then got faster and more technical...Metal. Then splintered off to Thrash, Power, Death, slowed down with Stoner, got 'complicated' through Prog, and got on the radio with Pop, and Glam...yet NO ONE acknowledges the roots...the Church and Gospel, as perceived by African and Caribbean slaves. So there IS no place for racism in Metal. And if I ever meet you, Glenn, the first round will be on me! Thank you for your input...VERY much appreciated!

Ideally, yes. I completely agree with you: Racism, homophobia, and sexism have no place in Metal, and the only thing that should matter is if the band is good or not. Unfortunately, prejudice is still a deep-seeded problem in the Metal community: Phil has been making slurs and doing shit like this since the 90s, and it's taken until now for people to start calling him out on it. How many times have you heard someone say "You're pretty good for a girl"? How often in the comments section have we seen people dismiss things and people they don't like as "gay," or "fags"? I've always wanted to believe that the community surrounding my favorite genre of music has always an inclusive melting pot of people and cultures, but the older I get, the more I realize that it's not always the case. Calling out our heroes, as painful as it may be, is a very important step in creating a community that truly anybody can be a part of.

Any woman can scream "Female Power" loud in public and then get praised, yet Phil gets criticized by doing pretty much the same thing on the stage of a small club. Performers always act exaggeratedly on stage to get the audiences emotional. I'm quite OK with what he did and pretty much all my Asian friends don't feel offended at all. It's quite a shock seeing him being forced to apologize for doing something neither illegal nor serious and then still being criticized.

I find the racism and homophobia in the metal community to be so ridiculous. Like you pointed out, one of the biggest names in metal vocalists is gay. Also, the guys in Suicidal Tendencies are all from different ethnic backgrounds. Marty Friedman? Never heard it brought up, but pretty sure he is of Jewish ancestry. I don't know if it's so much that racism is rampant so much as people tend to be less likely to call these guys out on it. Not that it's much better; but it's nice to see people are getting fed up with that attitude and making people accountable. There's room for everybody. The color of someone's skin or the part of the world they come from does not make the music any better or worse. The only real difference... An artist may introduce a sound associated with their ethnic/cultural heritage to their metal... Not a bad thing because it keeps the music fresh and interesting. If we were all closed minded, white, and of European ancestry, the music would probably have stagnated pretty quickly.

I don't think its fair to even have the conversation "racism in metal" when mainstream hiphop has been racist since its inception, AND, anselmo's specific circumstance was that he was tired of people calling him a racist and skinhead because of the way he looks, so he did the salute to piss people off and it got out of hand. WHETHER OR NOT THAT'S THE MOTIVATION behind what he did is irrelevant. We have rappers with names like "ghostface killer" which is a racist name no matter how you slice it, and Wu tang gets mentioned on mainstream sources constantly. If its ok to be a racist rapper or rap group, then let the one or two out of every 1,000 metal bands that want to be racist alone and let them be racist too. Fair is fair. Its actually alot less common to see racism in metal than most other genres because metal is the genre of outcasts and outcasts know how it feels to be ostracized and tend to be accepting. With a few exceptions, metal is pretty much racism free, and the few examples of racist metal bands are already disavowed... again, UNLIKE IN HIPHOP which is more mainstream, and embraces their racist artists. So this shouldn't be a conversation. Not 4 years ago, and not today.

Ghostface Killah is taken from a karate flick. Learn your facts before you spew fucking bullshit out your mouth. The fact you had to go talk about whole OTHER genre instead of acknowledging white metal guys can be insensitive towards minorities shows how unwilling you are to admit there’s a problem. As an Asian guy I’ve experienced more racism in metal than hip hop. Sucks because I liked that music but go on about how knowledgeable you are.

@@noodlehoppa7212 I am aware of the origin of the name, and no matter how you slice it, its a racist name. We have COUNTLESS examples of hip hop racism, and hip hop is mainstream. Hip hop's racism is universally accepted. And as an asian person, I'm sure you'll continue to experience racism until you start looking at yourself as a human being instead of a race modifier. And as far as you personally experiencing more racism in metal, you must have lived in the one area on the planet where racism in metal is tolerated, because I've been in the metal community since the early 80's and I know damn well that racism in metal is almost nonexistent. As a matter of fact, aside from a few racist bands over the decades, I've met maybe 25 fans in metal in my lifetime, that were racist. So maybe you're not getting friction because you're asian, maybe its because you're an asshole who is too busy identifying yourself as asian to make friends and enjoy yourself. Or maybe its all in your head. Who knows. But my original point stands, and you've only proven it more true. Especially since it can't be argued that hip hop tolerates racism in its ranks, and racist artists win awards, get radio play, etc. The reason I brought that conversation up is because THAT is a problem. There's not enough racism in metal for it to EVER be a problem. The metal community has always been accepting. Just because metal heads don't like YOU doesn't mean they're racist. Don't come over here trying to piss on facts.

OR metal is nothing more than a genre of music (and more broadly, art) that, like any form of art, can be used express literally anything the artist wants - yes, even if you consider it hateful, yes, even if you consider it vile, yes, even if it shakes you to your very core. Art is not and _was never_ meant to be all sunshine and rainbows, otherwise every song in the world would be a vapid, soulless carbon copy of "Cumbaya" and you know it. I think bands that promote fascist or other such propaganda are conveying a stupid message, sure, but I'll never trample their absolute right (in the US, at least) to convey that stupid message through metal music. Saying shit like "metal isn't about that!" is just a No True Scotsman dodge, and if you truly want to combat those kinds of messages, you have precisely ONE option that will have any effect whatsoever: Don't support their music. That includes not supporting them monetarily, but more importantly not standing up on your soapbox and trying to shout them down/censor them. Censors are the useful idiots of provocateurs because taboo = attractive, no matter how much you wish it weren't so. TL;DR - I'm a massive fucking racist and me having an even remotely dissenting opinion means I support the Third Reich 2.0, or something. I'm sure that's all that virtue signaling retards walk away with when they read comments like mine, because muh emoshunz is more importent then reezon FUG U NAWZI 😭😭😭

I don't know why everybody is surprised !¨ The Confederate battle flag, called the "Southern Cross" or the cross of St. Andrew, which has been described variously as a proud emblem of Southern heritage and as a shameful reminder of slavery and segregation, used by DIMEBAG in his guitar and sometimes cowboy hat... does that make PANTERA and not just PHIL ANSELMO racist ? and now we're surprised because he wanted to express himself...

I think it's a bit taking things easy to act like Anselmo did and just pull an excuse video after.. Probably because he saw danger in his business and profit (aka food). There are no excuses for this kind of behaviour, he just deserve to fall into ignorance and be forgotten by the metal community.

TBH, I couldn't care less whether someone is racist or bigoted. What someone believes or believes in isn't nearly as important as what they do and what they say. I see no transgression of Phil nor Hetfield/Ulrich so I really see a reason for either to apologize for anything other than cowing to Twitter SJW's and other similar social media shitholes...

some people (stupid people actually) think metal isn't about showing how hard can you go, it's about showing how edgy you are, and some bands just try way too hard and doing some dumb shit (for example: Rammenstien, Marilyn Manson etc.) . I hope one day the metal community would be clean of attention whores and posers.

I'm dissapointed how Phil actually apologized to the whole politically correct police, considering his tough guy image. Political correctness is growing, as Phil didn't had as much trouble for expressing white pride during 90s. Most of time rightist imagery in metal were meant as a joke even though classic metal bands nowadays should have firm rightist ideologies to smash the political correctness of cultural marxism. There is an affirmative action and double standard going here. Other races and cultures are allowed to be proud of their identity, even when they're expressing that pride with mass rapes and violence towards whites, as in case of refugee crisis in Europe, or in case of pretty much all the history of racial tensions. Black power? Yes, it's being expressed all the time in mainstream rap, together with decadence among western culture, although not as brilliantly written as any work from white traditionalist and neofascist writers.

"... the only thing that really matter is can you play." I don't quite agree with this. Lots of people are into metal that can't play at all but they love the music and support the scene. Racism has no place in metal, period. Neither does sexism, homophobia, fatism, etc. And this shouldn't be limited to metal either but to society in general. Metal happens to be a very small community and we really can't afford the in-fighting.
