The Raddy RE40 AM FM Weather Alert Shortwave Emergency Portable Radio with Bluetooth, and MP3 Player takes Entertaining to New Heights. Inspired by its predecessor, the Raddy RF-750, the RE40 provides a High Capacity Battery, Dynamo, White Noise Mode, Flashlight, Headphone Jack, Power Bank, Solar Panel, and Huge Speaker Audio. A lot of fun to be had for under Fifty US Dollars.

Features I like about the RE40:
Huge Speaker Audio.
Shortwave Reception is Solid.
Seventy Presets Per Band.
Illuminated Dial.
Dynamo.
4,000mAh Lithium Battery.
Solar Panel on Back.
Weather Alert Mode.
Flashlight.
MP3 Player Remembers Track, and Track Position.
Sleep Function.
Headphone Jack.
Power Bank Feature.
SOS Mode.
Durable Build Quality.
Features that could be Added or Improved on:
User Replaceable Battery.
Stereo Playback when listening to BT/MP3/FM Radio with Headphones.
Lockout for Thumb Wheel.
Move Compass to Carrying Strap.
Improve AM Reception.
Overall, for the Fun Factor, this Radio gets a Recommendation. If its size is too much, similar fun can be had with the tiny Raddy RF-750. With a few tweaks, the RE40 will become the Green Giant it was born to be :)

Thank you for taking the time for such a great and detailed review. With current times including increased severe weather, political and other issues I think everyone should own an emergency radio.

Todderbert, could you please explain to me the reasoning behind non-replaceable batteries in radios? Here are my questions: 1. What am I to do when the Li-ion battery goes bad? 2. Do I throw away the radio? 3. Are there individuals or stores that can replace the the batteries? 4. Would I have to buy another radio every 4-5 years? I have portable radios that's 25-30 years old. I don't understand this non-replaceable battery thing. (Please excuse my tone. I don't won't to offend you or your followers.) Thanks.

I've never understood the reasoning behind buying a limited capability radio, when an SDR dongle attached to a phone or computer gives you TRUE all-band coverage for the same price as THIS.
@blipco5
@blipco5 6 месяцев назад
You can replace the battery. It may take some soldering. No biggie.
@radellaf
@radellaf 5 месяцев назад
@@mikeh8416For me it’s two things, I can put the radio where there’s less RFI (sure I could run coax to the computer or long usb cord), two, I use radio as a way to get out from behind a screen and keyboard. three, there are websdr and kiwisdr sites for when I wanna both use a computer (with all the extra features) plus someone else’s nice antenna, and four I haven’t felt like ponying up for a _good_ sdr like the airspy hf discovery or hackrf (as I do have a license). But I get your point.
@radellaf

I’m totally with you. It’s not that hard to put some 18650s in a user-accessible configuration. This one is particularly egregious - I can solder in a lipo pack but four screws should be enough to get to it. Real answer? They hope people don’t know or care. Saves a little money on case design, esp if waterproof.

This is the same concept as buying iPhone, iPad or similar tablets with sealed-in battery. It's good for about two years and then throw away that expensive disposable item. They hope to sell you a new one by that time. This is the tactic Apple invented to get rich off consumers. I never buy anything with non-removable battery unless I have no choice.
@knightshousegames
@knightshousegames 9 месяцев назад
I think with 2 changes this thing could be absolutely perfect First, obviously make the headphone jack stereo. Feels like such an oversight on such an otherwise feature packed device. Secondly, make the internal battery user serviceable. Make it run off of an 18650 or something that can be popped out and replaced easily An optional third might be to turn the flashlight into more of a lantern/flood light. Whenever I have a device that has a little flashlight feature thrown in, I never use it because I already have a bunch of flashlights, and in situations where I am using a light on this sort of device, I don't need a ton of throw, what I'd rather have is a glow to illuminate the area where I am using the device in question. So maybe they could put a little diffuser dome on top of that flashlight to make it behave more like a camp lantern in an emergency

I have the ZHIWIS ZWS-700 which is just a rebranded RF-750 and I really like it a lot. Because of its small size I use a snap on badge clip through the top loop on the radio to clip the radio to my clothes over my chest. It works great for outdoor walks as a Bluetooth speaker, mp3 player, and if I clip it to my right lapel I can extend the antenna for a hands free radio which is really important as I need both hands for taking my two Huskies for a walk. As a Bluetooth speaker, the play, pause, skip forward/backwards all work to control my connected phone's streaming audio. For me the RF-750 being tiny and light weight is one of the best features about it to clip to my clothes and it gets loud enough to hear over the background noise of the streets. And it looks cool too. Also when using the channel memories for the radio bands it scans the band very quickly when you long press the play button. I mean really fast as in 10 seconds for AM and FM and from 30s to 60s for shortwave. That is way faster than any other radio I've tried and as Todd had said it took 5 min for the RE40 to scan channels to memory. I like the tuning wheel for fine tuning and finding weak stations on AM and Shortwave which the channel memory may miss during a scan.

There's a lot to like here. I think it makes more sense having the weather on the tuner than moving through them with FF/RW buttons. As an engineer of German descent that the SW band lights no longer quite line up with the drum is going to annoy me. :)

So long as the SD card is formatted FAT32, any size should work. Most SDXC cards are formatted exFAT, which is the only reason they are "incompatible" with devices that claim to only support up to 32GB (the maximum capacity of SDHC). You can usually use higher capacity cards in those devices by just reformatting them as FAT32.
@P_RO_
@P_RO_ 9 месяцев назад
Sometimes really big cards still won't work in some devices, but you can usually go up two sizes with anything. Windows won't convert larger cards to FAT32 but lots of freeware choices for that.

I really like this radio 📻. It looks like one with a drum-style radio dial, with a dial light behind the drum. The plus ➕️ is the compass 🧭 on top. Ya can even buy a second one for the car 🚗. They're excellent "By the road", or "power outage" radios 📻, and they may even alert ⚠️ ya to storm conditions. Your friend, Jeff.

Thats a nice portable radio size. I wonder if there will be an LCD dial version. The 750 was way too small. They should make the compass detachable. I have a compass on my bike handlebar that only works when you slide it off. The WB is a nice feature. I'd like to see an even bigger size table model like the CC 3 or GE Super radio. Nice job TB and Raddy!

Greadio (cheaper), ZHIWHIS and Emgykit (about the same price as Raddy) have the same features as this Raddy, but still no apparent replaceable battery (I found no mention, so must not be a positive feature). We got the headphone jack, but a throwaway radio due to non-replaceable battery in all of these clones!

Fine review. I have the ZHIWHIS ZWS-702 especially the same as the RADDY. Got the easier-to-understand manual for my 701 from Raddy. The ZWS 700 and 701 each has the EQ feature, does this radio not offer it? Usually accessible thru the Bluetooth setting. Saw nothing in the manual in regards. I like that these Radios are on the chunky side, less prone to falling over. Would like to find an 'L' - connector for the headset but all I've seen is the straight-in type. My 701 and 702 each came with a higher quality wrist strap attached, don't care for the simple lanyard. Thank you for your fine reviews, new subby.
