AMD Radeon Vii launched with some question of whether or not it would be able to overclock. The 19.2.2 driver update unlocked a staggering 200mhz worth of overclocking potential, but is that enough to match the likes of the Nvidia's 1080 ti or 2080?

AMD runs on decibel power. "Is it too loud?" isn't the right question. The question should be "How loud can we get?" We should demand louder cards that we get to rev up like car engines by pressing on the spacebar. "Hey, is that an AMD card?" "What???" "...an AMD card!?!?!" "What?????"

While it may not be absolutely higher than the 2080 or 2080 Ti, it's a heck of a lot more stable and no stutter compared to Nvidia cards in select games, especially in 'heavy' frame hurting games that eats up VRAM like no tomorrow.

These cards are capable of 2200+ but they lack the cooling. Under water these cards are routinely getting 2150+ core. So I am hoping the waterblocks EK puts out in about 2 months will do good for these cards. I know my Vega64 is a silicon lottery winner. 1855Mhz is where mine tops out at. HBM2 is iffy.. 1150 is possible but only under 42C. Generally I am stuck around 1100 on the HBM2. So you'd think these 7nm cards could hit the 2.0-2.2Ghz marks.

Historically when AMD launches a new card on a new die shrink they normally release a budget card. They would take an existing gpu and shrink it, then do a run of gpu's to test the new die shrink, and work out the bugs, in the past they would do this on budget cards, but this time they did their flagship card. I think in the past they avoid top tier reviews by releasing a budget card, and often it would get great reviews for a budget card avoiding negative press from releasing a top tier card on die shrink. It takes about 2 to 3 months to print a gpu, all those fabs working together making a gpu. So every time they make a batch of gpu's they can test em then tweek the next batch, etc. So this would explain why there's a small batch of AMD 7's, and why the drivers where rushed... AMD is working hard on their navie cards which might be out in 3 months or so, (cuz it takes 2 to 3 months to print those gpu's, after tweaking the first batch of gpu's (amd 7's).

Clearly Vega 64 is the better value today and seems to be roughly 1080 performance at well below what 1080 prices were a few months ago, and way below what they are today. I would not be surprised if Radeon VII does not improve a lot from here. New game drivers and configs will find ways to use that extra memory and fat pipe to deliver extra performance. Just as AMD is pushing core count on CPUs I wonder if they won't push memory speed and pipe on the GPU side. Textures and shaders are all about memory.

Totally agree, AMD's BIGGEST mistake with the Radeon VII was not being diligent enough with their marketing. It was funny and SOOOO on point watching Steve scolding AMD for the terrible launch. They probably had so much confidence in what the card can do that they didn't pay attention to the details. I ordered mine after watching Jay, Steve @ GN, Digital Foundries, and der8auer. In fact it was Jay saying he would use the Radeon VII and der8auer hitting 2100mhz on dry ice with bad drivers, that did it for me and aside from not yet having good drivers and straightforward overclocking or undervolting capabilities in Linux, I don't regret getting the card

Huang's comments about "did AMD thought about this launch one day before?" Is true, AMD really did rush this out because Navi came back with problems which pushed launch way back. Vega 7 was never intended to be released to counter Nvidia RTX, it's a stop gap, also AMD don't have funds and don't give a shit, people buy Nvidia anyways, like how the 1050ti outsold the RX570 despite costing the same or more and performs much worse.

Also, for the Manual fan curve. It goes off Junction temp, so when you set your curve, you'll want to be 10-15 degrees above what you'd regularly so. My card sits at 2100RPM and sits in the mid 60s during gaming.

Please please please, let me know how that water block works. I took the shroud off my Radeon VII along with the fans and have it vertically mounted with a Vornado room circulating fan attached to a cut out hole in the plexiglass. Works pretty good, but this beast needs to be water cooled to sustain high core frequencies for hours on end, even after under volting.

Still sitting at 2146MHz peak Clock in FireStrike at 1.17V...can't go higher with the stock cooler. I reached out to Raijintek and asked them if a Morpheus is planned for the VII or any other cooler at that, and they said that they just got the scans and are working on it. I guess we can expect some decent coolers for the VII in 2-3 months. Still, even with that I doubt going above 2100MHz on air is not possible due to temps. Still, despite the 1.17V, the card itself roughly draws 360W peak, that is pretty nice still. Something like 2050-2080 at around 1.1V or even 1.08 if you got a decent card should be ok.

To figure out the MHz of the card - why don't you hook up the other display you have on your table to it and have the Radeon software on the other display? Or if you have an old Android unit lying around - then use AIDA64 along with a plugin to display system information live on the android device, it's quite doable and just requires a little bit of research.

Hey Timmy, because of the unevenness of the multi-level die mating to the vapor chamber liquid metal or common thermal paste will not provide any benefit and might actually overheat the card. www.hitachi-chem.co.jp/english/report/060/60_tr07.pdf is the thermal solution AMD has used for this card. The graphite wafer will compress where needed to transfer the heat better. This technology has been around for a long time and until AMD can organize and even out the chiplet design to make it flush the graphite is the better solution for now. Great review brother. Keep it up!

TJ a good way to watch what the card is doing while running games or doing benchmarks is to use AMD Link, AMD's phone/pad app. I use it on my iPad next to me when I play intense games or run BM's so I can see what the stats of the card are real time while the benchmark or game is running.

It's great to see some enthusiastic competition between company products. Software will be improved over time and hopefully.. Hopefully Navi is similar enough in software implementation that ports between XBoxes and Sony 5 's to PCs will be improved in performance. Since many reviewers don't actually 'own' a Radeon 7 will not see the improvements over time due to tuning and cooling improvements.

I don't agree with this review as it felt like you spent 5 minutes to get a score and you're drawing conclusions the next 10 minutes. For the fan noise, look at the options you have in the card settings in order to quiet it down from 3000rpm to 2000rpm . it will allow at least a better audio experience, at the least...

If he overclocks this card, and reduced fan speed... this card will catch fire... it's the hottest card on the market... averages around 100 celcius... Because this isn't its own card, this is a superclocked vega 64 i believe it was. xD I dunno what AMD expected when they made a card that gets as hot as the sun, and only give it HALF a radiator... Did they think 3 fans would compensate for 50% less radiator surface value? lmao.

I highly suggest to get on with AdoredTV's review (which was done prior to the driver enhancements), the moment you play with voltage and fan speeds, the card becomes a better experience, still an underperformer but a good card none the less. Also I wouldn't be surprised that the 1tb bandwith and 16gigs hbm2 comes with a high temperature footprint, not the 7nm vega chip ...
@thosewhoslaytogetherstayto3412
@@MyouKyuubi The Junction temp is not the actual temp of the GPU. My OCd Rad7 sits at 60ish degrees underload with fans @2100RPM. The junction temps are the highest temp of the GPU. Most monitors are capturing edge temp. This card in my experience has been as cool as my windforce 1060. In case it isn't clear, the junction temps of Nvidia cards if it was captured would be as high as the Vega II in similar conditions. In fact, it makes more sense to use junction temp instead of edge temps as you can allow for longer boosts even when the edge temp rises as long as the junction temp stays within your parameters

if the price comes down a little bit and 3rd party cards can reduce the ridiculous noise, there's some potential here for a great mid-high end card. Especially considering the smoothness of the experience (these cards have better 1% lows than even the 2080 Ti in the testing I have seen so far).
