This review answers a lot of potential questions, particularly those wondering about what "Junction temperature" is on the AMD Radeon VII, or how it compares versus "GPU temperature." While walking through graphite thermal pad tests vs. thermal paste, we also talk mounting pressure, noise levels, MOSFET thermals, and performance. Cards tested include Radeon VII, Vega 56, Vega 64, GTX 1080 Ti, RTX 2080, RTX 2080 Ti, Titan RTX, and many more.

Well, at least now we have an another explanation about HotSpot on VEGA10 chips. Till now nobody know anything, everybody was guessing around it. @@Boborjan1986 I'd be really curious if someone tried carbon pad on vega10. I run my vega 56 with cryonaut(morpheus 2 cooler) and had to repaste it like 4 times before getting somehow acceptable hotspot temp. As soon as i go over 1040mV on core, hotspot reaches 105C and card throttles, while gpu temp sits at nice 60C. I would be glad to sacrifice 10-15degrees on core if it means hotspot would be lowered by 5-10degrees with carbon pad

@@MartinHagi220 Did the Vega 64 have the same issues with flatness, did anyone test it did or didn't make good contact and where?
@MartinHagi220
@MartinHagi220 5 лет назад
Not really with the flatness but the sheer size of the core + HBM is probably causing problems. You can google vega 56/64 hotspot issue and find multiple reddit threads. Most aftermarket coolers have convex shape to apply highest pressure in the middle. That means that contact is not perfect with a large die. Even Steve tested it in one of his previous videos. Vega 56/64 with stock cooler is limited by die temperature, so hotspot is not so apparent. As soon as you use aftermarket cooler, OC is limited by hotspot temperature, that can be 20-35C above core temp and depends heavily on core voltage. As example my core at 1035 mV runs at 60C and hotspot has around 85C. Card can sustain cca 1520Mhz boost. At 1045mV the core is at 63C while hotspot hits 105C after less than a minute and card throttles to around 1450Mhz.

I love frametime plots because I feel like it gives a better impression of the actual gaming experience, I think you could find a better way to present that data without several overlapping line plots - there are many 3D plots that could do a better job depending on what software you're using to generate them. This way you could show a ton of cards on one timeframe plot without all the chaos.

Often games just load as much as possbile into the VRAM to just have it sitting there and prevent a later need of loading it. Especially after seeing this, I’m sold on the frametime pacing of the VII. Right there with a 2080 and 1080 Ti as far as overall frame rates go too. I think that’s pretty badass. I guess the HMB2 is superior overall based solely on the better lows and frametime pacing. You kinda see that with Vega as well. Btw, I love that term, frametime pacing. Also, love your content GN. Never disappointed in how you present nearly unbiased and objective opinions and well gathered data. Also, I’m wearing one of your shirts rn. Lol. P.S. It’s the triblend. Thank you GN for who you are (both in front of and behind the camera) and for the reviews you make. I have a few comments. First: I LOVE the progress bars at both sides of the screens when you show graphics. They make it so much easier to plan for pausing the video or where to prioritise where to look before the next slide comes up. Second: At ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-n9rhtSwAVfI.html, how about adjusting the Y axis to start at your noise floor (or just a few dBs under for a future improvement margin)? That would increase the resolution of the diagram making it easier to differentiate between the performers. (This can obviously be applied to other tables too where you normally will never go beyond or below a certain number.) Third: The tables where you show FPS are sorted by max FPS, like for instance ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-n9rhtSwAVfI.html. I'm thinking, there seem to be a lot of room for a secondary table if you move the first to either side. The secondary could be sorted after minimum FPS (either 1% or 0.1%), a number I am much more interested in (a "worst case scenario" table). I applaud you for providing frame time tables though. Speaking of tables, in my personal opinion I would prefer that all non factory overclocked results should be displayed in a lighter contrast/color compared to non overclocked. This would help my eyes navigate through the many product names and performance numbers. (I usually only overclock at home, not at work.) Also, love that you test more than just games. I'm a gamer for sure and interested in FPS, but many times when I really need to know what to purchase I look at "enterprise" reviews, tables of number crunching applications, as it's when I'm working that I'm loosing time/money when things don't perform to my benefit. Anyway, this is a really great channel. Thank you! =)

My trick for such situations is increasing mounting pressure by adding little metal washers. Pictured above you see two of the washers: one to get a better look and a second one below one of the mounting screws, to indicate the location I placed it in. pretty much exactly as expected. this isn't a consumer card, AMD is just selling some of their instinct cards at a cheaper price cause it's cheaper than making a whole new GPU. nice gesture to the fans, but not a rational purchase in any way. you don't need 16 gigs of hbm2 for gaming. at the moment your best bet is to look for used pascal cards or used vegas, or to cling on to whatever gpu you have. i've pointed a fan at the back of my 980ti's VRM area cause that thing will have to last for a while it seems... I don't completely agree that you don't need 16 gb for gaming. There have been at least a couple of games that requested 8gb and more of vram on my vega 64 and 2080 has 8gb of it. @@Kenmanhl "what do you mean you get less for your money? One has ray tracing and the other has 8GB extra VRAM." Sure. Of which those 8 extra GB of VRAM has no actual effect, and only increases the price of item... Just because it has more VRAM doesnt mean any of that VRAM is used... Just as me putting 32 more GB of ram on my computer for a total of 64 gb ram doesnt do anything because 32 GB is already more than enough. The RADEON VII's extra vram is complete overkill, and wont have any actual effect on your gaming experience. "Choose the one that matches your gaming choice." Hmm, idunno, AMD's version of a 1080 Ti for the same PRICE of an RTX 2080 which actually has MORE performance, AND comes with DLSS and Ray Tracing functionality. Pretty sure the most financial choice here between Radeon VII and RTX 2080 is the RTX 2080... Or just a regular-ass 1080 Ti that gives you basically the same as a RADEON VII just for almost half the price. :P Mate there's no justifying Radeon VII, it is arguably AMD's biggest fuckup. "BTW, Battlefield V runs faster on Radeon VII than on RTX2080." Pretty sure the only game RADEON VII runs faster than any RTX card is Hitman 2... Which is the game they used to develop RADEON VII.

@@MyouKyuubi, thanks for reminding me about the 2nd hand market. I'm actually looking for an upgrade and your suggestion of the GTX1080Ti for half the price 2nd hand is very tempting. Will require a re-TIM but that's OK. Battlefield V does actually run faster on AMD than on Nvidia and I've double checked the benchmarks just now. Hitman 2 is a constant win for Nvidia. You might have it confused with the first Hitman?

@2:20, Steve's talking about not being able to see how much vram the app is actually using. I'm pretty sure DXVK (translates dx11 to vulkan API calls) can show this, it's got memory requested and used as 2 separate displays as part of its fps overlay. It might show higher than actual numbers since translation to vulkan increases mem usage, but it's gunna be more reliable than looking at requested memory. DXVK is a linux oriented library but I'm pretty sure it works in windows 10.

I really don't understand why they decided to release this. At best it's just comparable to a 2080, and that's ignoring the driver issues, and noise. It only beats it fully in that compute test. Plus the 2080 made it to market first. I'm not convinced they're going to sell a lot of these. It just seems like it would have been smarter to not market this as a gaming GPU at all, and instead as a more production oriented card for the extra compute power and the video memory. I know they're sort of doing that, but they're only going halfway. I think they're sort of biting themselves in the foot marketing this as a gaming card at all when where it really shines is elsewhere.

It does what MSI afterburner does and even has a game tuner built inside it which can profile games. Nvidia is 10 years behind ... But ahead with hardware. AMD has more features but Nvidia is more bare bones but faster in games. Especially in directx11. AMD to me is a greater value for those on a budget. My 4x Fury crossfire has fewer issues than my Titan Xp... Yeah, I think I'll take Radeon drivers any day! PS: If anyone gets ahold of a Radeon VII, I'll trade my Titan Xp Star Wars Empire collectors edition for it, straight trade. From a little testing (99% of its life it has ran stock), it seems to game at +800 Memory (so that's around 13 Ghz effective, but if we are using "effective" speeds, its +1900 memory). It will bench higher, I had it running 648 GB/s at +900 on the memory slider for Firestrike (but don't game that way, you will have artifacts, +800 was fine playing Fortnite without issue, it seems +840 also does fine, but I figure drop it down some more for a safety margin). It seems like the Titan works now, but my goodness, Shadowplay had severe game freezes/stutters recording Fortnite (game breaking, you'd see an enemy, get a half second freeze, and then next frame you were dead...). And Watchdogs 1 was crashing around every 30 minutes to 1 hour (Fortnite once every hour or two). It looks like everything is working NOW, but for a LONG time I had that card just sitting on a shelf because my 2x Fury was more reliable (and now that I have 4x Fury, I really don't need the Titan, I only use it for Forntite since most of my games fly on my crossfire build since most of my games support Xfire except Fortnite, and its just not worth keeping a Titan just for playing Fotnite...). If someone wants it, make me an offer, I'll send it in all original packaging and its display case, I would rather have an AMD card (I'll also trade for 2 Vega 64, or 2 Vega 56 on water). I live in the US in Texas if that makes a difference (I'll gladly let anyone test it out in person too).

They’re shown as “Out Of Stock” currently because they haven’t been released for sale just yet today. Newegg and others have the placeholders loaded up for when they do. It’s nice to see 6 different board partners offering cards though, so *maybe* they won’t sell out in the first hour or two of actual sale release. The product availability should populate in the next couple of hours.
